The 10 best Bed and Breakfast Inns in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany

April 26, 2023 Alice Mieles

The most populous (with 18 million people) and westernmost (bordering Belgium and the Netherlands) of Germany's federal states, North Rhine-Westphalia is one of Europe's most highly industrialized areas, with an impressive 30 cities of more than 100,000. Cologne is the district's biggest city, and the capital is Dusseldorf. Bonn, the former capital of West Germany, is also here. All three are part of the Rhine-Ruhr region of nearly 12 million people, one of Europe's biggest metropolitan areas.

One night only!

I chose this hotel, because it was the nearest to my private destination. The rooms are ok, but my bathroom was a bit smelly. Everything was clean and tidy. The bed a bit too soft, the mattress too thin. Breakfast on Sunday morning was great. A well lighted, friendly room, nice , friendly staff, huge buffet. Loved the umdergroumd parking which was included. So : worth the price.

Decent, comfy and cheap hotel on a convenient location =)

We stayed here to visit the 'Final Fantasy - Distant Worlds' concert at the Mitsubishi Electric Halle, which is close to the hotel (about a 15 minute walk) and made it the ideal choice to stay. There's plenty of parking space (underneath the hotel), and there's public transport nearby (Tram 705) that leads directly to the city center. (about a 15-20 minutes ride) We found out that you can buy tickets on the tram itself at a ticket-machine and decided to buy 48-hours free-traveling tickets, which had a nice reduction in price if bought for multiple travelers. The hotel itself is a budget hotel with limited staff and doesn't have its own restaurant (so no option for an included breakfast), but there are two restaurants in the same building that can facilitate breakfast, lunch and dinner. I had a very decent lunch at the cloud-kitchen myself. The other restaurant is an all-you-can-eat&drink, which we enjoyed as well. The rooms of the hotel are small, decent and clean. All the usual facilities were there (an okay shower, toilet, TV, hairdryer, etc.) but don't expect too much luxury. I was pleasantly surprised however, that the window possessed a roll-down-shutter system. I like my room dark at night ;) Also, checking out it easy. You simply don't have to. ;) The doors do unlock after the checkout time however, so that the cleaners can do their job. The personal code to unlock your door will become invalid after that time. The only real drawback to this hotel is that it doesn't have air-conditioning in its rooms (it does have a radiator). We were here in March, so no issues there, but I can imagine the rooms can become really hot during summer. All-in-all the place definitely offers great value for its price/night, and would definitely stay here again if there's another concert to our liking! =)

This was a great little hotel in the centre of Dortmund. Convenient, clean, quiet, and most importantly, with a great cafe. The cafe opened early (6:30 Monday - Saturday, I think 8 on Sundays), which was very convenient for that first tea/coffee of the day. They did a good range of drinks, cakes, sandwiches as well as a full continental for €10. I can highly recommend their muesli, which I believe is made in house. The staff were all very accommodating and spoke good English.

The Dulcet Tones of an Electric Power Drill to Start Our Morning

Reviewed By markcE7056EY

TLDR: If you're going to stay in this hotel, ask them BEFORE you arrive to be placed in a room that is far away from the adjacent construction site! After a grueling two days of work in Bielefeld, my partner and I were looking forward to sleeping late since the checkout time at the Legere Express is 12:00. Instead of the restful morning we very much needed, our day began at 7:45am to the grating sound of an electric power drill penetrating a wall somewhere near our room. Upon expressing my displeasure at this situation, the hotel manager told us they have no control over the situation. The work is happening in an adjacent building and German law allows for construction work to happen from 07:00 to 20:00 each day. They offered to move us to another room, but was a poor form of compensation since a) we were already awake from the noise and b) we were checking out that day. A voucher or discount towards our next stay in one of their hotels would have been more satisfying given the situation. I am giving this hotel a three stars only because everything _else_ about the stay was fine; clean, great breakfast, good location, friendly staff.

Awful customer care

Reviewed By teidmor

We knew that reception opening time was till 22:00 and therefore i wrote, in the booking note, "late checkin, our flight will land at 21.25".  I thought that someone was waiting for us to checkin, it was just a matter of 30min. When we arrived, around 22:30, we found the door closed, we rang the bell, but nobody was answering.  We then tried to call the hotel emergency number, none answered. Worried abut the situation, it was night and we were on the street without any accommodation.  We then went into the restaurant beside the hotel entrance and fortunately we found a girl very kind to help us. She also tried to call the emergency number without success. After 5 calls, finally someone answered the phone, but unfortunately she was not able to speak English. I don't speak German, unfortunately, and I passed my phone to the girl of restaurant that talked to the girl from the hotel emergency number. She said that our code was 888, but neither us and the restaurant girl were able to find a pin pad to type this pin. The guy at the phone did not have an idea on where this pin pad could have been. After at least 20 minutes and other 2 calls, the hotel guy told us that the pin pad was in the street close to the ring bell, something really invisible, especially in the night. We finally got the key and entered our room. Together with the key, we got a welcome letter. Unfortunately it was in German and therefore we were not able to read it. Is it a good welcome? When we entered the room, we immediately noticed that it was not very clean and the bathroom even worse. The wc was really dirty (see pictures). We also noticed that a lot of long hairs were on the room/bath floor and on the table. We also found long hairs on bed sheets (see picts). Only half roll of toilet paper was available. We could not fix our issues because in the meanwhile the restaurant closed and if we had called the hotel emergency number, we would not have been able to communicate. The following day, we talked to the receptionist and he really apologized for what happened. He also changed our room, fortunately. We have finally asked for a late checkout for the next day, since our flight is at 22:00. We requested checkout at 18:00 and expected an immediate positive answer, after all problems we had, but the receptionist said that had to ask the boss. After a couple of hours we asked again and she said that we need to wait for tomorrow morning for his answer. The next day, late checkout was denied because the cleaning staff had to clean (?) the rooms. While leaving the hotel, we saw the bed sheets were left (during cleaning service) on the floor ... without any protection and we fully understand why the bed sheets were full of hairs... Having the room not fully cleaned can happen also in the best hotels, but usually a good customer care can fix immediately the issues and maybe add something complimentary to the impacted guest, just to give a strong sign of sorry. We haven't received anything in this hotel. Only another room (the second night).

Very good, local hotel

I stayed here one night while passing through the area. It's a small hotel, right next to the main train station. I had a room on the front, facing the road. Due to the sound-proof glass, the noise from the passing traffic was very acceptable. Service is friendly and attentive. Prices quite modest for the room and service.

Fantastic stay

We booked a couple of nights here on our way back from a tour of Germany. It was a five hour drive to Calais in the final morning but with hindsight it was worth it. High up in the beautiful hills this absolute gem of a place is a great place to stay. We chose the bed/breakfast/dinner option which given you’re a bit of a trek from civilisation choosing dinner is a wise option. The food is very traditional but very filling. Drinks were reasonably priced - all in all a two night stay with all food and drink worked out at £380 - £190 a night but you didn’t need to spend on anything else. Breakfast was enough to see you through the day. Some great views and if you enjoy road cycling there are some epic routes in the area. Lots of fast descents and some great climbs. For history fans the Sorpe and Möhne dams are 6 and 24 miles away respectively (think Barnes Wallis!) They themselves (especially Möhne) are worth the visit. The sauna was good too! We’ll definitely return.
