Reviews on French food in Otsu, Shiga Prefecture, Japan. Ōtsu (大津市, Ōtsu-shi) is the capital city of Shiga Prefecture, Japan. Ōtsu is known as the main port of Lake Biwa, the largest lake in Japan. It briefly served as the capital of Japan from 667 to 672 AD during the Asuka period (538 – 710). The city is home to numerous sites of historical importance, notably the temples of Mii-dera, Ishiyama-dera, and Enryaku-ji and the Hiyoshi Taisha shrine. This buffet emphasizes beef, for which several preparations were available. There was also sweet-and-sour pork, various kinds of fish, vegetables, and desserts. Non-alcoholic drinks are included in the fixed price that I thought would be ¥4,500 (see picture), but was actually ¥5,500 during Golden Week. For an extra ¥980, I had a glass of local brew, Nagahama Ale, which was wonderfully hopped and delicious. For another ¥900, a glass of local red wine, Minori, was poured generously from the bottle at my table, and the waiter took time to indulge my curiosity about it. It was a decent medium-body red made from variously sourced grapes. Typical for Japan, it was served chilled. Japan has not mastered wine they way they have mastered whiskey, but stay tuned…Two things stood out that I take for granted in Europe and America: hearty breads were available, along with real butter, and there was a pitcher of real cream at the coffee station. (The prevailing Japanese sense of a good bread is ふわふわ - like a cloud, and coffee whiteners tend to be artificial instead of being milk or cream.)Service was up to Japanese standards, and I left The Garden in a good mood, not inclined to argue about what seemed to be a price discrepancy of ¥1000. Back at my hotel (a nearby Toyoko Inn), I looked carefully at the photograph I took of the placard advertising ¥4500 for an adult dinner guest, April 1 through May 8. The fine print at the bottom said (roughly translated), prices will be different April 29 - May 7.

Excellent and high-end French restaurant, turned to 11 through Japanese refinement! Situated at the top floor of the Prince Hotel Lake Biwa (Otsu) outside of Kyoto, this restaurant is very elegant and enjoys a great view of the lake. Definitely a venue where you need to dress for dinner (suit and tie would not be out-of-place for the gents - I'd say it's the kind of place where if you passed gas, the waiter would happily take the blame). Our dinner menu for that evening was a selection of 8 small entree dishes comprising seafood and meats - of which you could select as many as you wanted. The meal started off with an amuse bouche of pate campagne and a couple of starters of a salad frisee with smoked sea trout; and a sweet potato cream soup; both were excellent. From the fixed choices of the 8 entrees, I chose: Scallops (coquilles St. Jacques), trout meunière, roasted lamb chop, mushroom risotto, and a roasted beef. (Other choices included a shrimp, a lobster, and ... one other that I can't remember.) Of the ones I had, the lamb chop and the risotto really stood out. Delicieux! While 5 "entrees" sounds like a lot (and it was ...), the dishes are really like "tasting menu" portioned (that is, by American standards -- my Japanese hosts said they would be "normal" portions for them!). For example, the lamb comprised of a single chop; the lobster, a portion of the tail; the scallops were just a pair; the beef was a single slice; the trout a portion of a fillet; etc. One could order one each of the 8 offerings or repeats of whichever one(s) desired. The wine list is extensive and very good; wait service was excellent, attentive, courteous, and unobtrusive. And yes, the wait staff is well-versed in French (and some English!).
