Shinyu gets an Excellent from my family.

Reviewed By SandBTokyo

We decided to stop in Suwa to break up a long drive back to Tokyo. Shinyu looked very good and the price was reasonable. The hotel is renovated and gives a nice modern spa hotel atmosphere. The greeting at the hotel is very nice and the lobby area is beautiful. We felt very welcomed when we arrived. Our room was facing the lake. It was Japanese style with tatami and futons. Nice room, nice view. The public bath was nice. Not huge but felt very good. They have an indoor bath, small outdoor bath, a sauna and a cold bath. Dinner was great, as was breakfast. They were both courses and delicious. Service? Well, this is what makes all the difference. When we book hotels we need to detail my daughter's food allergies which are serious. For this trip we had booked many hotels in a row and for some reason when we booked Shinyu and checked-in we just forgot. It was our fault and when we sat for dinner we saw her prepared meal that she obviously could not eat. The staff at Shinyu didn't miss a beat. The didn't make a big deal about it. No stress. The quickly adjusted and made a wonderful dinner for my daughter and also prepared for her breakfast in similar fashion. Wonderful. Such great service. Maybe the building isn't perfect. But the service was perfect. Shinyu was our last stop on our trip and we left with a smile. Shinyu gets an "Excellent" from my family.

Got My Snow Fix

Reviewed By tttora11

Wanted to see some proper snow after being deprived of it for a couple years in Tokyo, and certainly got my fix here. Town and countryside were a magical white on arrival, and had some steady snow falls during my 1-week stay. Also easy access to the local ski-fields at nearby Shiga Kogen and Ryuo. Hotel is a 10 min walk uphill from station, which is terminus for a convenient connecting express train from Nagano bullet train. Friendly, professional hotel staff. Nice town/mountain views from lobby/lounge. Delicious kaiseki-style breakfast. Two types of baths - large public bath downstairs, and open air private bath on the roof (great for watching the sunset), and they even have gaijin-sized yukata owns! Nice town/mountain views from lobby/lounge. Good base for exploring nearby shrines/temples around Yudanaka and historic Shibu Onsen. Of course the visit to the snow monkeys is a highlight, not to mention the amazing hill-side hike to get there! Great late-winter escape.

Decent ryokan in a great setting

Reviewed By railtripper333

Stayed two nights here in late February, there seemed to be many guests staying for snowshoe trekking (through the Kama tunnel and beyond) We didn’t come with the right type of boots, so we missed out. Coming by car, we were helpfully advised in advance to hire a 4WD, as the mountain pass (Abō Pass - closed in winter to all but hotel guests and staff) from the main road can get icy. The setting high in the mountains is fabulous. The big windows in the lobby has a fantastic view on a clear day. Our twin room was a lot smaller than we’re used to in a ryokan, but the view of the mountains made up for it. No en-suite shower or bath, but the onsens downstairs were very adequate. I loved the bird feeder next to one of the outside baths - birdwatching and bathing, what joy! (On the downside, the outside onsen wasn’t quite hot enough for me in February on a snowy day). Overall, a good mid-range ryokan catering for hikers and mountain lovers, with decent facilities, meals, and a great view.

Yumoto Saito Ryokan

Beyond what we expected

Reviewed By kraijan s

I've been to Ryokan in Japan before but Yumoto Saito topped up my ryokan experience to another level. Service - All the staff was super helpful and friendly. They really did try to help us even a little small request at midnight. Apart from the room, their service would be another reason for me to go back to stay at this place again. I really felt like home. Room - We booked a villa at the Kaizen-sou villa, the same building with public onsens. The room was spacious and clean. We even had our own toilet (which was a relief for us!) The bonus point was we have our own outdoor bath that we can overlook the mountain view by ourselves. I totally recommended staying at the Kaizen-sou villa if you have a chance. There's no wifi in the room. But we wouldn't bother about it that much because we have such a nice view for us to enjoy. Food - Our room was also included dinner and breakfast and they served us at the private dining room. Yes, we felt super VIP! The food was AWESOME. They served with 10+ small plates that fill you up nicely. Onsen - OK, this is the best part of this ryokan. The public outdoor onsens were AMAZING. Imagine it's about 7c and you dip yourself in the hot onsen. Absolutely blessed! This ryokan is also famous for the onsen - it's white water onsen from the Shirahone onsen village. If you still decided whether you should stay at this ryokan, well, from my review I think you probably get the answer!

A Lovely Ryokan Bargain

Reviewed By brendenmgallagher

We stayed at a number of Ryokans of various price points throughout our honeymoon trip to Japan and this one was such a pleasant surprise. The decor has a throwback 70s-80s vibe that would suit a Wes Anderson film and the attitude is a nice mixture of traditional ryokan hospitality and modern style. The rooms are spacious for ryokans (which, warning to Americans, might feel smaller than western hotels), and the baths are just lovely. We used both the public and private baths, and enjoyed our time in both. If this hotel wanted to rebrand as a quirky, hip spot for young westerners they could, but you get the sense that they enjoy catering to their Japanese clientele and providing an affordable yet luxurious experience. We spent one night at a $600 a night ryokan and the experience between the two was honestly comparable. Furthermore, Matsumoto is a lovely town, and if you want to add a day trip to your Japanese itinerary do yourself a favor and stay at the beautiful Hotel Tamanoyu.

Traditional Japanese accommodation

Reviewed By nuovorealismo

We visited Hanaya with my 1-year-old daughter. It was difficult to find baby-friendly ryokans but we could luckily find Hanaya which offers several good service for a baby. At first, they heated baby’s food anytime we want. Secondly, they brought dinners to our own room. At last, private onsen bathtubs are furnished with each rooms. Due to all above, we were able to spend our time with my baby comfortably just like in our own house.
