Sushizanmai Ueno

Comparing to other medium price great sushi places like Nemuro Hanamaru in the KITTE mall behind Tokyo Station or KatsuMidori inside Sebu in Shibuya; Sushizanmai which is a chain that opens 24 hours (and I'm evaluating the Asakusa location) is much more costly.Though we've ordered some premium sushis that included different cut of Toro's, but at the end spent almost 5000Â¥ for 2 and still felt hungry.Whereas the other 2 places mentioned above we were totally stuffed for around 5000Â¥ or so for 2.Qualities are all comparable. Thus the ever present queues at the other 2 restaurants explained there's a lot of smart eaters that don't mind the wait. Will I come back to Sushizanmai? Probably not unless I'm not near the other 2 or I didn't want to wait.

It's a cool and friendly place in a recently redeveloped block in Otsuka. Each of the restaurants in the block has a different speciality - this is horsemeat and dashi, though there are lots of other tapas-style choices (not being a horsemeat fan, I avoided it and still ate well). The food is tasty, nicely presented and there's a great choice of sake. They have a full and helpful English menu.

My Japanese friend who lives in Yanaka took me to this Sushi restaurant, which is famous for their anago-sushi. Anago is a family of eel. We sat at the sushi counter and ordered what we wanted to eat. I never liked anago before, but their anago is cooked in a special sauce. So it's very tender and melts in your mouth! In order to taste many kinds of sushi, I asked for small rice balls. It cost me 12,000yen (GST incl.) for two of us. That was a great feast! I was so glad for I had enough JPY with me, as they don't accept credit cards. It's only a minute from Subway Chiyoda Line Sendagi Station (Dango-zaka Exit). It should take only 7 minutes or so from JR Nippori Station (North Exit). But it took us much longer, as we enjoyed Yanaka Ginza first. At the end of Yanaka Ginza, we turned left at the T-junction. When we came to the traffic lights, we turned left at the corner of Oshimaya noodle shop. Sushi Noike is just a few shops from the corner. As it's a small restaurant and is quite popular, it's better to make reservations. They are closed on every Wednesday.

Had two types of the the tuna and salmon nigiri. The tuna was melt in mouth perfection. This place also has a few rolls to choose from beyond the traditional set nigiri options. Affordable for that sushi knack and even though it had a line it moved quickly. English was spoken and an English menu exists. If you’re in the mood for sushi try it out.

The price was fantastic, nice and cheep. Just the perfect lunch.

Toriton Tokyo Solamachi

We stayed near Tokyo Solamachi while in Tokyo so this was one of the restaurants we had to try. We went there for the first time on a Sunday, about 1/2 hour before it opened and there was already a long line that went around the corner and wound back to the front. We waited about 1 1/2 hours before the 4 of us were seated at the counter. My husband and younger son are vegetarian so they mostly ordered the Japanese omelette sushi (tamagoyaki) and cucumber rolls (kappamaki). My older son and I tried many of the different nigiri but our favorites were the various salmon and tuna sushi. The cuts of raw fish are thicker and larger than anything we've had in the US. And the prices are really cheap (130 yen for the vegetarian dishes and between 290 yen and 630 yen for the fish and more exotic dishes). You can also make your own cups of green tea free of charge. Every 15 minutes or so, the chefs would call out a special priced dish holding a tray of them and you can try those if you want. Also, if a dish you want isn't circulating on the conveyor belt, you can write the number on a order form and give it to a chef for them make it special for you! At the end of your meal, the waitresses come by and scan the stacks of dishes and print out a bill for you to pay at the entrance. Our first meal cost around US $50 for the 4 of us! Obviously a lot of those were the cheapest white dishes but that was really cheap for a sushi meal. We loved the restaurant so much that we came back the next evening where the wait was about 40 minutes. We will definitely be back if we are ever in the area again!

Hands down, the sushi chef prepared the most tender and freshest sushi I've had the world over. The restaurant is within 400 meters of the Edo Sakura hotel, and perfectly complements the great Tokyo experience we've had here. The small establishment is on the second floor walk-up of a modern looking building. It features about 10 4-top tables and a 15 seat sushi bar. The waitress spoke great English and is very friendly. The sushi chef is very courteous as well, and saw us out as we departed. Dinner for two cost about $35, with a beer and jasmine tea.
