Needed to grab a late meal and all the higher end restaurants in the area were closed for food given the hour. This place seemed to be more of a bar than a restaurant and this was evidenced by the food. Nearly everything on the menu was deep fried although the food was tasty and very reasonably priced. The portions were enormous (neither of us finished our plate) and the service was efficient and friendly.

Hotel Hengelo Restaurant

The immense size of the restaurant is an advantage at breakfast time, because there is always a quiet table available to enjoy the excellent extensive buffet breakfast, Van der Valk Hengelo is offering. But at dinner time the sheer floor area of the restaurant with most tables occupied is a bit overwhelming. Van der Valk restaurants have evolved over the years from road houses, where you could get cheap and plentiful food into a chain of respectable restaurants. Some Van der Valk restaurants are really good, like Van der Valk Drachten. The trend I observe is, that Van der Valk still tries to go upmarket further. Most of the times prices are hiked a bit when I visit a Van der Valk again, up to the point that the restaurants really become a bit expensive. (However, in the expensive Dutch restaurant landscape, prices are still average). But in the process of going upmarket, Van der Valk hasn't completely shaken off its history of roadside restaurants, because still portion pack butter is served with the toast, instead of individual slices of fresh butter (on ice), the obligatory set of three side dishes of fried potatoes, French fries and a surprise vegetable was still not traded in for a free choice of side orders and I have reservations about the grade of cooking fat used in the kitchen (But this is a subjective taste observation). Because of the large attendance, waiting times were a bit long this evening, but the service of the staff was friendly and polite. Food was of average quality, but tasty and sufficient. The starter, carpaccio, was prepared with standard quality beef, but fortunately the chef had restrained himself with adding rocket and pine kernels. The main course, schnitzel with with trimmings was OK and the dessert, tiramisu, was a house special with spiced biscuit (speculaas), in one word surprising and delicious. Generally speaking, dining at Van der Valk Hengelo is no bad deal, but the vastness of the restaurant and the questionable value for money works against them. I must add, that in most cases, it is difficult to get value for money at a Dutch restaurant without a discounted voucher.

Spent quite bit of time here 2015, the management promised to translate the menu into english but that never emerged .....the outside seating is the main draw of this property in fine weather. Unfortunately the service is slow and the team do not aniticpate you next requirement, the food is average and slightly overpriced. They are however almost always open therefore a safe backup when other resturants have their nght off ( Wednesdays) .

I have had dinner here on a couple of occasions over the last few months while staying the hotel. The menu offers a decent range of options, nothing exciting or surprising but something for everyone. I've taken the steak a couple of times, decent but nothing special, it comes with vegetables and fries. Prices are very reasonable and the service is friendly, there is a nice mix of guests that always makes for a positive atmosphere.

A cosy, dark restaurant with a simple but good menu with food such as spareribs, mushroom soup, carpaccio, pasta and when the season is right asparagus or mussels. The portions are large and the price fits the amount of food you get. You can visit with your children. (If you don't like stuffed animals, i'd advise you to eat somewhere else.)

We had dinner at the chef's table and it was a remarkable experience. The service at the Lansink is as good as you can expect it in a place of this category, the selection of wines excellent, the food just delicious. Each dish was beautifully presented and all the components with elements from different cuisines over the world delivered a fantastic and exciting explosion of flavour. Seeing the chef and his team working in the kitchen was the cherry on the cake.

Nice setting and location, pretty good food, but the overall experience is a bit let down by the service. Half of our order for starters was forgotten. The replacement starter was luke-warm. When we asked for a second glass of the red wine we were having, the last tiny bit of the bottle contents were emptied into the glass. Instead of bringing a new bottle and a new glass, the glass was taken back to the kitchen area and brought back filled. What happened to first tasting whether the new bottle was ok? Where was the cork? Was the glass indeed emptied first as claimed by the serving staff? The experience could have been much better.
