Discover Restaurants offering the best Cafe food in Gouda, South Holland Province, The Netherlands. Lying about 15 miles northeast of Rotterdam, Gouda is most famous for its eponymous cheese. One of its most prized attractions, De Waag on the town square, was once a weighing house for cheese traders and now features an exhibit detailing the entire cheese making process. Also on the square is the 15th-century town hall, one of the oldest in the Netherlands. Early on a September Saturday evening the old-fashioned interior was already full but luckily it was still warm enough to eat outside, with a good view over the market square. The cheese soup, with bits of bacon, celery etc, was very good but also very filling, which slightly spoilt my enjoyment of the traditional pan-fried mussels and chips which followed. Perhaps I should have gone for the pear and blue cheese salad which my wife had and which would have been a lighter option. We were told that we could have extra portions of chips for free but we were too full for that. Never mind, the food, a couple of beers and watching the world go by made for a very pleasant evening. By the way, noted that they stopped serving food at 8.30pm.

We went for a drink and decided to have a cheese/meat platter which was just right to go with the beer and just enough to fill us up for "dinner". It was a variety of local cheeses and salamis with several slices of different breads and some dipping sauces. We tried a few beers suggested by the owner (whose English is good, we're trying to learn Dutch), and had a great chat with him about his biercafe and how he has built up this business. Great fun!

I've been here for lunch with my mom.First good point: menu is available in dutch and english, but if you aak the guys they can look for italian, spanish and french menus. We took two bagels (I don't remember which ones, but it doesn't matter, every bagel is so good) and a bottle of water, for a total of 17.60 euros. If you can, avoid water and prefer something more ingeresting to drink...water is very expensive compared to other drinks. The girls are very nice and kind.Personally, I love the atmosphere of this place!P.s. I didn't know, now you can find here also grasshoppers and others!
