Very nice hotel in a wonderful little town in Japan

Nice shuttle bus to and from the train station. Although the hotel is "only 15 minute walk", the last 1/4 mile is uphill so if you are dragging roller bags like us, that 1/4 mile is a bear. And you walk thru a 1/4 mile tunnel too, so its not a great walk. That said, its a nice hotel with a nice public bath. Restaurant was great on site. And there isn't really any place near by to eat as its rather secluded. Great view of the mountains and Sendai Bay. Very competent. The doors to the room aren't fitted all that great. While I didn't hear hallway noise, you can see a gap between the door and the door jamb so its a bit alarming, but no problems.

Beautiful hotel/ryokan over looking the bay with amazing facilities and fantastic customer service. We had stayed here for 2 nights at the end of our trip to fully relax and enjoy the best that Japan has to offer. We had selected the hotel/ryokan to treat ourselves and we were amazes beyond our expectations. The price wasn't cheap however the facilities, service and quality was definitely more than we bargained for. The rooms firstly were large and comfortable with simple yet elegant decorations. Homemade snacks and two different types of tea are provided on a daily basis and our views of the bay were simply breathtaking. Needless to say, we spent a good amount of time taking photos. The ryokan itself was rather large and what I would consider as a hotel with Japanese style rooms. However having said that, we were able to make use of the private outdoor onsen, overlooking the bay once a day. This was an amazing experience. There are also two different public onsens to use at your leisure however we didnt use these. We went with a half board package and boy were we surprised by the quality and quantity of food provided. Breakfast was a great spread with freshly cooked bread and an assortment of Japanese dishes. Dinner wise, it was a full 7 course meal that included local specialities cooked to perfection. Overall, this is definitely a great place to surpluge and experience true Japanese hospitality.

Very nice with some minor “spots”

Reviewed By bixierg

Overall: Very nice hotel with friendly staff. Relatively big hotel but you don’t feel it’s crowded. The room is for Japanese standards spacious. The TV is quite small but you are not here to watch TV. Food: We booked a package including food and drinks. They have an open kitchen where you order your food and it’s prepared in front of you. They try very hard and the food looks nice but at the end of the day it’s just quickly produce dishes. The quality is OK but don’t expect a gourmet explosion. Everything is self service. It comes with an all you can drink set. If I should give it a price I would judge Tokyo pricing: the food 4.000 and all you can drink 2.000. I mentioned it because like this one can better evaluate the room price Small “spots”: This is the very first hotel in Japan where I didn’t have any shampoo in the room/bath The shower and the bath in the room is small. The toilet itself is also very small.

Convenient hotel with very obliging services

Reviewed By fymkong

Stayed in 432, Basho-Tei floor, with the view of the pine islets. The room was well worth the price - I had upgraded it to this floor. Staff spoke limited English but there is a translation device which assisted in the communication. Worked my way around with my limited Japanese. The private ‘Kagomi’ onsen was luxurious and clean. I did not use the public onsen offered. I also used the shiatsu massage services. Breakfast was a buffet style catering to those with a taste for Japanese and Western cuisine. Went to their first floor restaurant who offered the seasonal speciality (a hotpot of good quality beef and yam) at 1800 jpy It is conveniently located near all the sightseeing spots and Fukuurajima bridge. Everything to see was walkable. Left there well relaxed and taken care of. Recommended for those who want to honeymoon there - ask for the matsu suite.

Totally enjoyed my peaceful stay in this balinese feel hotel! The dining area has a nice ocean view. It is also very family friendly with comfy play area for children while parents can just lounge around after dinner or breakfast. Best of all, they have two private onsens and separate ones for male and female hotel guests! There is also a table tennis facility next to the onsen:)

Good price for an onsen (hot springs) hotel

Reviewed By joshel2016

The sea view from the Ubudo windows is not the best view in Matsushima, as you are looking past the slightly grimy fishing port to the beautiful pine-covered islands, but the rooms are large and traditionally Japanese without being oppressively so. For example, they have many sizes, shapes and colors of traditional clothing (yukata, samue) to wear inside the hotel, even sizes large enough for my husband and me. We got one of the Japanese style rooms with a pottery bathtub--like sitting in a huge teacup--and if you like Japanese baths it was worth the extra price. The rooftop communal bath is also supposed to be beautiful, but with our in-room bath we didn't need it. The two included meals--dinner and breakfast--were lavish, beautifully presented, and excellent if you like Japanese food. If you don't like (all) Japanese food, you might want to find a hotel that allows you to order off a menu. Bottom line: there are probably better hotels in Matsushima-kaigan, with equally nice communal baths, and less obstructed views of the islands, but for the price Ubudo gave excellent value.

Traditional Japanese hotel in wonderful seaside village!

Reviewed By maryjA988GS

Lots to love in the town of Matsushima, Miyagi Prefecture. 1.5 hours N of Tokyo, Sendai Shinkansen stop. This hotel was very conveniently located next to the local train station. Has elevator. Rooms fit 4 for sleeping on futon/tatami mats. Pluses: traditional Japanese dinner and breakfast were worth the experience! Hot Spring/bath area was clean (older but ok). Rooms equipped with tea service and instructions. Very close to all the action in town. Coffee machine with cappuccino and espresso in lobby. Potential opportunities: absolutely no one speaks English. Pantomime and google translate resolved successfully. Serious minus of the hotel is the overwhelming smell of cigarette smoke, particularly common areas. Non smoking room not available. That all said, I’d stay there again for location and food. I’d open the window wider. Staff was delightful and very gracious.

Wonderful place to stay

We stayed for two nights at this great hotel in Matsushima. The owners are really welcoming and very kind. We don’t speak Japanese, and the owners were great at communicating with us in English. They were so lovely and told us all about the town & where to eat/what to see etc. The rooms are a good size, and have good amenities- everything you need. There is a Japanese public bath as well, which is lovely. Thankyou so much for a great trip. Sarah & Chris x

Good value for the price

This was a last minute booking to one of 3 most beautiful places in Japan, according to most ratings. It is a short drive out of town and is very easy to find. There are only 4 rooms with a nice public bath and 2 co-ed, private baths that can be reserved for 50 min. We were greeted with our name in Romanji on a reader board next to 3 others all in kanji. Our bags were carried upstairs and placed in our room. There is a nice walking trail near by that goes along a bluff and through some woods. There is also a small marina nearby. On the negative side, two railroad tracks are near and the trains can be heard in all rooms. A traditional breakfast and dinner were included and the food was excellent and plentiful. All of the ingredients and fish were fresh with a wide variety of dishes. The town of Matsushima-shi is a 5-10 min drive and is beautiful. A boat ride through the islands is a must. There is a 40 min ride and a 1hour and 20 min ride. We found the shorter to be plenty. There are also several hikes/walks around islands connected by bridge. They are beautiful and easy. In the towns there are plenty of restaurants of all types and many shops. There are also several temples and shrines. This is a great place to stroll. We did, however, find the night life limited. The whole place shuts down. We had to go to the fringes of town just to find an place to have a drink. We will return here.
