Family-friendly ski resort 75 minutes by train from Tokyo

Reviewed By StefanNTokyo

Naspa is a family-friendly ski resort operated by Hotel New Otani which we have stayed at numerous times. Why? Because it is very easy to reach via train from Tokyo. Part of the family-friendly focus of the resort is its total ban on snowboarding which means there is none of the annoying snowboarding beginner crowd about to run you over on the slopes. The resort has a good range of slopes and lifts, all located right next to the hotel. Other facilities include onsen hot spring baths and swimming pool. The snow quality here is often great and unlike resorts in northern Japan, it is never too cold here.

Great japanese experience

Reviewed By Joel G

We planned on only staying one night but after the great food, warm hospitality and amazing powder up at Kagura we were hooked and booked another night. The owner does not speak English but has a tablet with a translator. She made up the onsen (bath with hot spring water) in a small private room, very relaxing. The two dinners we had consisted of at least 8 or 9 different dishes which was great for sampling a lot of different authentic dishes. Very friendly and great value.

Hotel Sierra Resort Yuzawa

And also for your convenience we have free WI-FI, free drink service at our lounge and shuttle bus from Echigo-Yuzawa station.

Awesome staff ! Fantastic dinner (included).

Reviewed By zeallim

Summary: + Impeccable service from the Staff and fantastic meals provided were the highlights of our stay, despite unfortunate circumstances (high temp, no snow, closure of Iwappara). + Communication before, during and after the trip made it feel personalised. + Book thru the hotel website for the 22,000 yen best deal, if available, (inclusive room, dinner and bf, ski wear, ski rentals). + Special thanks to Mr Shotaro, Mr Kota and hard-working Hotel Driver. + I would rate the hotel alone 3.5/5, but the services from the staff brought it up to 5/5 Special note: 2 days before our stay, we noticed a heat front hitting whole of japan with temperatures soaring to 15 Degrees C (Mid March). This would definitely impact our intent of skiing and one of the main attractions of the hotel being a ski in/out. We phoned the hotel and were told that Iwappara (next to hotel) was closed, and arrangements were being made to provide shuttle service to a nearby operational Ski Resort. We decided to not cancel. During our stay, there were less than 10 guests (due to Covid19 and no snow). Hotel made special arrangements which enabled us to ski 2/3 of the days. Location: + Mid-hill between two ski slopes (would have been awesome if Iwappara was open) - Most of the few shops (mainly restaurants) nearby seemed close (maybe due Covid?) - Pretty much stuck in hotel area after last shuttle (long walk down to town) Facilities: + Free upgrade to family room with awesome panoramic views + Lots of comfortable lounge sofas strategically placed throughout hotel, Hotel lobby felt cosy + Onsen was well-maintained with awesome views, indoor/outdoor - in room toilet felt cramp, (used the onsen facilties mostly) - Rooms were slightly aged, hotel gave a "The Shining" vibe ??? The ground floor of the main building had quite a number of band music rooms which puzzled me. Meals: + awesome view from restaurant, same for dinner and bf + Dinner: main highlight of stay, delicious, menu for both nights was different, 5-6 course, able to state preferences, fresh ingredients. You could be expecting to pay ~$50-100 per pax outside for a similar meal elsewhere. +/- Selection of Japanese/Western set, both days japanese menu was the same, may consider changing a few items on the hot plate Services: Shuttle Service - requirement to pre-book and fixed timings + Driver was helpful in assisting with luggages and ski equipment + Hotel accommodated to adhoc requests (low guest, may not be avail) Frontdesk + Most are well-spoken in English + Polite and will do their best to accede to your requests or queries + Customer Service Excellence (E.g. Grateful to Mr Shotora who took the van keys and stepped out of office to provide a lift to the train station so we could make it in time for our shinkansen.) (E.g. Upon realising there was some miscommunication for our ski transport, the hotel immediately made arrangements to ferry us using the hotel bus) Recommendations: - Provide a yukata so guests can wear them to the Onsen. - Provide towels in the Onsen so guests need not bring back their wet towels to the room if they needed it the next morning. - The breakfast portion seemed a little overkill, perhaps could create a list for guests to select what they wish to have. Will definitely return here for my next trip!

Family-friendly hotel with good facilities but a little remote

Reviewed By 892nataliec

The Angel Grandia is quite a large hotel and offers lots of useful facilities to guests, from onsen to laundry facilities to pool and gym(but pool and gym needs to charge extra). It is very family-friendly and even offer self-served cotton candies and fruit juices almost 7/24 and kids simply love the experience! Nice outdoor and indoor onsens. The hotel price was quite good but they only make up your room once every 2-3 days. The hotel was always packed and crowded but very organized and efficient at check-in. Buffet was so-so and most of the breakfast items were cold. The dinner buffet also wasn’t that appealing so we’d rather eat outside or had a-la-carte Japanese menu at other restaurants inside the hotel. There’s a ski ground just next door so ski-in-ski-our was possible but only for beginners and if your kids are very young. The hotel also offers shuttle bus to other ski resorts but the operating hours were quite late and not good for those who plan to have morning or full day classes. Ski rental was again next door and not expensive but equipment is a bit aged. Maybe because it was Chinese New Year when during the 5 days we were there, 80%+ were mainland Chinese visitors...

Great for families and first time skiiers

Reviewed By johnramesjr

We had 11 family members, many first time skiiers, stay at this well known resort. The location is super convenient (steps from the train station, easy shuttle to gondola station), had two large rooms next to each other with a mix of tatami and regular beds, had a great buffet style breakfast/dinner with food to suit everyone's taste. While you can leave your skis at a locker, Yuzawa has storage for your equipment at the base of the gondola station. The hotel's outdoor onsen is really nice, and has many pools to soak in after a day's skiing. If you prefer trying some restaurants/bars in town, you are steps from the main street, but would check on the need for reservations and times of operations. If you have a large group and/or are a first timer in Japan skiing, this is a great option as it's a quick Shinkansen to Tokyo, accommodates English speaking tourists easily, and is convenient for accessing the mountain.

Wonderful place to get away for a night or two

Reviewed By socosaja

My stay at the Takahan Ryokan was wonderful thanks to the welcoming staff, classic room layout and view, and history of the property. I arrived at Gala Yuzawa Station a little before the official check-in time (3:00 pm) but was still picked up within five minutes after calling. The staff member on the phone spoke good English, as did the two staff members - both non-Japanese - who welcomed me at the hotel. Everyone was patient and went out of their way to help me and answer questions. One staff member led me up to my room on the fifth floor of the hotel, showing me the entrance to the baths from the hot spring presumably under the property and the room Kawabata Yasunari wrote "Snow Country" in, both on the first floor, along the way. I was really happy with the room, which was quite large by Japanese standards and had a great view. As another reviewer noted, the amenities in the room are dated, but I thought that just added to the charm. As a fan of Kawabata Yasunari, I really enjoyed the history of the place and the chance to look out on the town from the same vantage point he described in his novel. The comfortable seating - with tea set - on the room's balcony/veranda made this especially enjoyable to do. Overall, my stay at the Takahan was one of the most memorable and enjoyable I've had. Highly recommended.

They keep a high hygiene standard that all guests need to change their shoes to thier slippers started from you entered the lobby, they will keep your shoes at the lobby until you are going to leave. The room is clean and in new status which is very comfortable. We ordered the room with dinner and breakfast, the food standard and their service quality are very nice. Moreover, both of the meal were not buffet style and is Japanese cusin. We only did not satisfy the size of the public onsen area, it is not big enough actually.

Brilliant stay

Lovely hotel with beautiful onsens on 2 different floors. We stayed in this hotel for 3 nights. The service was impeccable and they will try to accommodate our requests to the best of their abilities. Buffet breakfasts and Kaiseki dinners were amazing as well, lots of variety. Turndown service will take place while we were out for dinner, there were tea sets provided in the room, together with hot water as well as Yuzawa mountain water for your enjoyment! Definitely do check out the onsens. A day of skiing out in the mountains, and coming back to the onsens was absolutely fantastic. Shuttle service provided to Echigo Yuzawa station. You can also go to the Visitor Center at the train station and get them to help you call the hotel for a pick up. Highly recommended!
