Just opposite of the Dom, this house offers a very nice and open atmosphere with a lot of wood (in the summertime they do have a very nice beer garden), very friendly and attentive staff (especially if you go more than once) and very good German food. They do have aclassical menu with about 20 items on it (I strongly recommend the pork filet and the chicken) and a seasonally changing menu with another 10 or so which gives you enough choice. They do offer some italian or asian dishes but they are very good on the classical german fare i.e. meat and potatoes. The food is freshly prepared from fresh ingredients and is very well seasoned and sometimes gives good new twist to good old classics. If you want a starter, be prepared for large portions. A resonably priced winelist is on offer as well. If you are in Verden on a business trip, this is the place to enjoy good and not too expensive food (for a more refinede meal use Pades)

Pades Restaurant und Bistro am Dom

God I really wanted to give this place a glowing review. The location is perfect. A quaint German village, the staff were charming - attentive, unpretentious and informative, the decor was stunning - typically minimalist with beams, wooden floors and white-washed walls with high ceilings that just ooze understated good taste. Then the food. Having a michelin star in their rather non-urban, laid back setting is quite remarkable and the starters really got off to cracking start. My spicy cream of pumpkin soup with chili oil was very luxurious but with a menacing after kick and showcased their focus on seasonal dishes. My partners ravioli with blood sausage and spiced plums was unique and totally unexpected: innovative, fresh, succulent and an assault on the taste buds. Add a couple of very moderately-priced and generously-poured rieslings and I liked where this was going. And then came the fish. The panfried fish of the day was marginally better than the deep fried chili and lime concoction which seemed overcooked and a little greasy for a restaurant of this calibre. Both dishes however suffered the horrible fate of having way too many things going on; too many strong contradictory flavours that simply overwhelmed the delicate fish: blood sausage, tangy mayonnaise potatoes, cold white sausage meet cut into slices and dumped on top? I know we are in Germany but it's just fish. Leave it alone. Terribly disappointing.
