neat room

Reviewed By Free D

The ryokan is located on the 2nd floor of a building on the edge of town. It is a good 15 minutes walk to town (although there's not much in town). However, it is only 5 minutes walk to a big supermarket where you can pick up breakfast (which is not offered at the ryokan). There's limited free parking space opposite the ryokan. The in-room wifi was strong. However, there's no hair dryer anywhere and no kettle in the room, you have to ask reception for water. The room was quite big and neat with a wash basin.

An unique way to explore Niyadogawa

Reviewed By CanIGoWithYou

We stumbled upon Guesthouse En as we were looking for a place to stay between two days of exploring Niyadogawa and the gorges, and booked it because it's quite central to the places we were visiting, and the review score was excellent. After our stay, we wholeheartedly agree with those reviews. Guesthouse En is literally in the mountains. After branching off from the main road, it took us 20 minutes driving on a single-lane winding road to reach it. We were welcomed by Takao and Megu. Even though they speak little English and our Japanese is quite limited, we didn't encounter any problem at check-in. Takao gave us a thorough tour around the property and made sure we were aware of the house rules (very reasonable as long as you recognize you are staying in a home-stay and not a hotel), and off to prepare our barbecue dinner for us. The first floor of the house is the common area and consists several Japanese style dining tables and a well-stocked kitchen. The toilets, sinks and shower facility are outside of the house, as well as a laundry area. The second floor consists three Japanese style bedrooms (futons instead of beds), and all with view of the mountains. Every single place was clean and well-maintained. We were provided with more than enough ingredients for the barbecue as well as the equipment. It was quite an experience to enjoy a grill under a starry sky. The kitchen was stocked with breakfast items, and the drinks were very reasonably priced. Thanks to Takao and Megu's hospitality. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Guesthouse En.

Auberge Tosayama

Have you heard of the auberge, conceived in France? It is not merely a place for lodging, but a setting in which to encounter extraordinary feasts, where one can bask in moments of contentment. Couched in lush green and clear flowing streams is the "Auberge Tosayama." We wish to welcome you with heavenly flavors and soothing spaces. The setting for Auberge Tosayama is Tosayama, the inner sanctum of Kochi City, on the island of Shikoku. With a backdrop of Kenmin no Mori Mt. Kuishi, and blessed with the abundantly flowing headwaters of the Kagami River, this place is laden with the graces of nature. Escape the hustle and bustle in only 30 minutes. Since first opening its doors in this beautiful village, Auberge Tosayama has continued to walk forward with the surrounding area. It exists as a bridge builder, taking action at home together with the next generation, and sending that energy outward.

Very nice rural retreat

Reviewed By KI-NRT

We were in the area to tour Kochi's sights and sounds, and while Auberge Tosayama is about a 45 minute drive from the city, we had our own car and felt that relaxing in a remote oasis would be better than staying at a bland, large hotel. After staying at this retreat, we felt that we made a good choice. It's a stylish small resort (only 16 rooms total) that blends in nicely with its mountainous surroundings. It has a mostly earthly tone in muted colors that really soothed our soul and made us feel one with nature. The reception area has floor-to-ceiling windows with great views of the lush greenery and rolling hills all around. Our Villa was accessed by crossing the river via a suspension bridge (it's sturdy, not to worry) - an interesting way to get to the room without it being too far to be an arduous task. The Villa itself is one of a few that on the other side of the river, and each are detached units that are reminiscent of a mountain hut. The Villa was tastefully furnished and well appointed. While we generally prefer larger rooms with bedrooms that are separate from the living room, the junior suite-style layout was adequate. Two nits to pick, however. First, no Onsen (natural hot springs) bath in the room, as is the case with many top-end ryokans. Secondly, internet speeds were terrible... that is, if we could even get connected (it was intermittent.) While I understand that the purpose of staying in a place like this is to unwind and disconnect from the civilized world, it would be nice to have the option to get online should we so choose. Oh, one more thing... the nearest electrical outlet is FAR from the only table in the room; we borrowed a long extension cord, but even then, it was literally a stretch for the cable to reach my laptop. At least they have a communal Onsen, which is gender segregated (like 99% of public ryokan Onsen baths) and offers both an indoor and open-air bath. It's not very large, but given the small number of rooms on site, it's doubtful that you'll have to share it with too many people, save for late afternoons (just before dinner) and late mornings (after breakfast and just before check-out time.) Auberge Tosayama's supposed calling card is its food offerings - after all, it has "Auberge" in its name. We enjoyed the meals, and it's probably as good as it's going to get in Kochi. It won't be on our "10 best ryokan meals" list, but it doesn't have to be. Not everything was spectacular, but there were a few memorable dishes. The Foie Gras "Joyo Mushi" was a dish consisting of Foie Gras mixed with grated Yam that was steamed into a ball shape, topped with Uni (Sea Urchin) and doused with Ankake sauce. Even the simpler dishes, including a salad that contained locally-sourced vegetables such as Komatsuna (Japanese Mustard Spinach) and Japanese Turnip was excellent. We were in Kochi after all, so we really wanted to try some of the indigenous dishes... and Auberge Tosayama did a great job introducing us to many local ingredients but with a creative flair. Overall, this is a very solid property that's modern yet cozy, has comfortable and stylish rooms (at least the Villas were) and good food. If you're going to be anywhere near Kochi City, and want to get away from it all, you can't go wrong with Auberge Tosayama.

Clean, simple surf lodge, excellent location, relaxed atmosphere, friendly owners, surfboards for rent

Minshuku Ikumi surf lodge was exactly what I needed. Clean, simple, quiet and right near multiple waves to surf! The owner "Ten" was awesome, super helpful and friendly. He speaks good English and was very gracious to show me around the area. I was traveling solo on a round the world business trip and Ten's lodge and hospitality were very welcoming, great respite from the fast pace of business. Ten gave me specific guidance on good waves to surf and even invited me to dinner with some of his friends. Wow! What a treat to go to a super delicious Japanese restaurant in a small fishing village in the area. I've never had so many different types of sushi, a real treat. I highly recommend Minshuku Ikumi if you're looking for a simple, relaxing place to stay while surfing. Thank you Ten!

Lovely quiet guesthouse

Reviewed By Marie F

I stayed at this guesthouse during the Shikoku pilgrimage, walking between Temple 38 and Temple 39. It is in a lovely quiet location about 3.5 kms from Ashizuri misaki. It is a traditional guesthouse - lovely tatami room and shared bathroom. Very clean and friendly. The landlady prepares the food which is very good and the Japanese breakfast was particularly nice with fresh grilled fish at the table. She also provided a lunch package with a message of goodwill. Highly recommended.

Enjoy the loving kindness

Reviewed By lawrencel1335

A must go stay before arriving temple no.24. Hotsumisaki-ji. This is a very well maintained minshuku over 40 years, comfortable and homey. Food are excellent with helpful English speaking host, lady Chisato and her husband Tokumasu San. My family of three couples spent a wonderful night there. In addition, this lovely couple host really went out of their way to help us rerouting our trip during the typhoon. It is an act of extraordinary compassion. For those who take up the walk of henro, this is a place to really experience the hospitality and the loving kindness offered by the locals in Shikoku, without their help, the walk will become much more challenging than it is. The Tokumasu couple represent the Buddhist loving kindness preached by Kobo-Daishi and they allow me to experience the purpose of my walk, the reason we are paying tribute to the great master Kobo-Daishi. Wish them well and be successful with their operation, helping more henro travellers. ?

魚が美味い。近くの温泉まで送迎あり。女将さん最高!

Reviewed By Yaeyama_Hotaru
