A ryokan with dedicated and hospitable staff

Reviewed By Jiu Mu X

The most expensive accommodation of our 11-day trip but I should say that it was money well-spent. When we arrived at Kiso Fukushima Station, we went to the information centre opposite the station to ask the staff there to help us inform the ryokan about our arrival. We waited about 15minutes at the centre for our shuttle bus to pick us up. The ride to the ryokan was scenic and relaxing. We stayed in the Japanese style room in the old building of the ryokan. A spacious and cosy room with clean private toilet and bathroom. Dining at the restaurant was a great experience. Our Japanese style dinner and breakfast were delicious. The beautifully presented food was served and introduced to us by the hospitable restaurant staff. However... there was too much food. We felt bad that we could not finish all the yummy food. Think it will be good if ryokan could reduce the portion of rice and noodles and let guests request for more if they need. The ryokan also organised free star-gazing session for its guests. A rare chance for us to look at the star-filled sky from the pitch dark summit and learn about the milky way, constellations... Our guide cum driver was very passionate about astronomy and he knew a lot about the stars... It will be perfect if he could communicate in English... What we like the most about this ryokan is the people... the reception lady, the star-gazing guide, the restaurant staff, the shuttle bus driver.... they were all very zealous staff. The ryokan owner was lucky to have staff like them.

Far below expectations

This was really our disappointment of the trip, so much that we left after one night and cancelled the second night (without refund). You stay in a side building at 100m from a main hotel, which feels extremely empty and has no atmosphere at all. There is no staff in the building, the “lounge” is terrible with blue light and few old uncomfortable chairs. Wifi is only available in that part of the building. We didn’t feel at ease and welcome at all. The only nice thing are the onsen in the main hotel.

Kakehashi Onsen Ryokan

Hot spring and view Kiso nostalgia!

Reviewed By K O

If you really want to experience a traditional Japanese inn (ryokan) with hot springs bath and exquisite Japanese food, this is the place. We found this ryokan accidentally. First of all I tried to find a hotel with hot springs, and this is the only one with a mid-range price I could find in this area. The Kiso area is popular among both Japanese and foreign tourists for its beautiful mountains and river and the historic post towns. Kakehashi Onsen ryokan is right next to the ruins of a bridge on the Kiso river. We stayed in a river view room. The river view was amazing. It's moving to look out the window and see the colors changing with the time of day. And for dinner we had delicious grilled fish from the river. Everything they served was delicious and local. The food is high-class hotel level. This ryokan is run by a family. I talked with the owner lady about its history, and she said it used to be luxury hotel 50 years ago, but Japanese economy declined and the Kakehashi (the ruins) is no longer popular tourist point (actually I didn't pay much attention to the ruins -- it's not so interesting), so they could not catch up with tourism trends. Now they have only locals come to the restaurant and hot spring. The buildings are old and some are falling apart, but the rooms are very carefully cleaned. Bed sheets are crispy-clean. I enjoyed the hot spring water pouring out 24 hours a day, with river view. For food and hot spring, compared to other hotels in this district, this hotel offers great value. More than anything, the hospitality of family is the best. Even though they don't speak English, they try to do their best. Google translator may help (they have wifi). We had a great experience, full of Kiso nostalgia!!! It's seriously prepared Japanese quinine using local river fresh water fish from in front of the hotel.
