East wing is a must stay!

Reviewed By Yukari K

We chose this hotel as part of a stopover, so we could visit nearby Yobuko (to eat squid). Looking at the Japanese travel sites, it was unclear to me what the difference was between the east and west wing, but I'm so glad to have chosen the east wing which turns out to be their newer addition with premium amenities such as a communal onsen bath by gender and a co-ed rooftop thermal pool/bath that you can go to in your bathing suit. This hotel appears to be owned by DHC, which is a Japanese cosmetics manufacturer because everything in the hotel bears their brand. The nice thing is that their products are very stellar and they are readily available. The communal bath is particularly well stocked with shampoo, conditioner, body soap, facial wash etc. They also have a full spa facility with steam and dry sauna, aromatherapy rooms etc It was also a pleasure to have access to the beautiful baths and pool almost exclusively. We spent a lot of evenings after dinner soaking on the rooftop, listening to the sound of the waves. The hotel is about a 30 minute walk away from the center of the city, but it is a beautiful route that takes you past the castle. The entire experience far exceeded my expectations. Highly recommended.

Sea Style Resort Ocean

Great place to stay with an awesome view

Reviewed By AnniCatti

This hotel was a really great surprise. Just a short walk from a JR station the hotel is situated right next to the ocean. You can fall asleep listening to the waves. The bathroom had a separated toilet and a big bathtub. The bed was really comfortable and you also had a few snacks as well as a water heater in the room. The city itself is about an hour walk along the beach or you can just take the train into the city. (just make sure not to miss the last one) When we were there (in October 2019) there was a construction side next to the water but since it seemed temporarily. Maybe ask before booking to get a room away from the construction side (still with ocean view)

good stay in Karatsu

Reviewed By bari_ttc

I have stayed in Karatsu for the next day yobuko trip. The hotel was under reconstruction so the view was affected. The bed is comfortable and very quiet, I had a very nice sleep. Breakfast is included for all guests, the variety is limited with only bread, rice and drink, a little bit disappointed. Karatsu Dai-ichi Hotel is definitely the best hotel in the city so I would recommend to stay here if you visit Karatsu, other hotel option is limited though

Birthday trip in Japan 2019 (Fukuoka, Karatsu, Saga and Ureshino)

Reviewed By Julia Y

Time flies, my birthday trip to Japan again! First night staying at Shioyu Naginoto! An amazing Ryokan in Karatsu which, I suggest, you must come to visit at least once in your lifetime! The room (I stayed at) is in Japanese style, big, clean and comfortable, with the sound of the sea waves, all your stress will be gone away! Weather is so good in November. Dinner was so great and delicious. A bar serving drinks free of charge was available from 6:00pm to 11:00pm. I also enjoyed the private family hot spring for 1 hour, which was also included in the Charges. Like x 100!

Stayed two nights in a twin room. The room was spacious and clean. Wifi was fast but there were only two electrical outlets. The bathroom is small but functional. The Onsen was very busy as this is a businesshotel and the men's Onsen only has limited space. Breakfast was rather simple. Parking was free. Would stay here again.

Beautiful historical Ryokan

Reviewed By kakuo3366

We stayed here for one night before leaving Kyushu. This traditional ryokan has been serving travelers for more than 130 years and currently managed by fourth generation owners Mr and Mrs Okachi, whose warm hospitality we greatly appreciated. The building and gardens were repaired, renovated and maintained to their old glory and beauty. There were also three galleries displaying pottery from local famous artists, who entrusted their artwork with Mr. Okachi. In dinner time, we had been served delicious meal in these beautiful dinnerware. As ryokan is in the seaside town, there isn't hot spring for open air onsen. There are two public baths for men and women respectively. We also have a small bath made of cedarwood in our room, which we didn't use. Both dinner and breakfast were traditional, delicious and plentiful. Kaiseki dinner using fresh seafood was skillfully prepared and artfully presented in pottery ware that we saw in galleries. The owner Mr. Okachi graciously invited us after breakfast to his newly built house just across the garden on the other side of ryokan. He kindly shared with us his early life and how he transformed this ryokan after WWII. It was fascinating. We wish to return someday to this beautiful property, chat with Mr. Okachi about his extraordinary life.

A relaxing onsen experience

Reviewed By msakurai

While the facility may look like any of a number of "modern' hotels--look beyond to the truly restorative onsen experience and you will be rewarded. First, our room for 4 guests was HUGE, pristinely maintained, quiet and just a joy to experience--well beyond expectations. The amenities were complete, beautifully presented, and top notch. There was so much space we never felt cramped or compromised. Then there is the sublime kaiseki dinner so beautifully presented with the freshest most perfect ingredients. The live squid sashimi was quite the experience--we all silently gave thanks to the squid for giving their lives for our nourishment. Add to that the top floor onsen baths; so soothing and restorative. Highly recommend taking the smaller pool that's exposed to the outside--sitting in that steaming bath as the early Spring rain pelted was truly amazing.

Hotel & Resorts SAGA-KARATSU stands at the head point of Karatsu city and boasts spectacular views over the Genkai sea on one side and on the other views over the estuary of the Matsuura river. Huistenbosch, a famous theme park that is styled after an old Dutch village, is a 90 minute drive from the hotel, and Hakata a bit closer at roughly an hour. Japanese style hotel in 70s Good value, nice location but rooms are dated

Reviewed By Groovy-Zen66

This is a typical Japanese onsen-style hotel from 70s-80s (though Karatsu does not have an onsen hot spring) although this could be constructed in early 90s. The hotel’s architectural design, now outdated, has a lot of mismatched spaces for the 21st century needs lobby too spacious with a junk souvenir store; a large cafe-like space with no one attending; unused Izakaya-style restaurants;a karaoke club and bar in the basement; a deluxe backdoor entrance not used currently. So much spaces are wasted despite its grandiose building and the spacious land. This place has fabulous views on the both sides: facing Nijino Mastubara Beach on the north; the Karatsu river on the south.side. However, due to the old design of the windows, you can enjoy only somewhat narrowed views of these picturesque sceneries. We had a buffet dinner and breakfast in the big ballroom on the 2nd floor. Food was okay but the ambience was as if we were eating in a school cafeteria. This could be morphed into a decent modern resort, if the management refreshes its mind.

I must say it was one of the best (mainly)seafood dishes I’ve ever had.

Reviewed By tomizuta1953

We stayed at this ryokan in early November 2021, when the fourth wave of COVID 19 was rapidly subsiding. It was pouring when we arrived at the ryokan in Karatsu, close to the castle and facing the beach. I had thought that it was a restaurant offering lodging, but I understand that it was the other way around. In any event, a lady came out, showed us the car park, and brought us umbrellas. We went to the small reception, and it didn’t take us long to complete the registration. The receptionist, who I thought could be the owner as well, asked us if we had brought vaccination certificates, which we had forgotten to bring with us. “We ask because we are offering free drinks to guests. But let me see what we can do.”she said. With that we were shown to our room upstairs on the second floor. We were told that the public bath was on the ground floor, but it appeared that the bath was busy at the moment with some families. We decided that it would be better to wait till closer to dinner time, which was the right decision as I had the entire bath for myself and was able to relax from the long day. I was looking forward to dinner, as I had ordered a course including squid sashimi from Yobuko close to Karatsu and famous for its fresh squid. Dinner was served in our room, which I guess has now become standard practice with the pandemic. Luckily the ryokan gave me the free sake. The squid came first after the appetizer. The squid was still transparent, testifying how fresh it was. It was really delightful. This was followed by a sweet simmered head of seabream, some Saga Beef cutlets and fried blowfish. I must say it was one of the best (mainly)seafood dishes I’ve ever had. I really recommend travelers to try seafood dishes on the Saga coast. It was a most enjoyable dinner. The ryokan however did not accept credit cards, and I had to pay cash.
