Kamikochi Imperial Hotel

The Classic

Reviewed By Noriko717

It's an Imperial Hotel but this one is more down to earth than the main quarter in Tokyo. What should be highlighted is not just the red roof that stands out from afar, but its service. All the staffs I met were kind, friendly and courteous and they were very well trained. The food was excellent. We chose Japanese cuisine for dinner even though the French was their expertise, and they did not disappoint us at all. We got a room with balcony that has a wonderful view of Hodaka. Breakfast is served at the table. Very comfortable and hope to come back soon.

Wonderful views of the Japanese Alps

Reviewed By tribecatravler

We visited Kamikochi in late May and were delighted to find this hotel was open. I believe it was the only hotel open at the time, given COVID and recent earthquakes. We had a comfortable room with an amazing view of the Japanese Alps. Just like on their website. For dinner we chose the Japanese course, which was fine. The service was excellent. I think this hotel might have the best mountain views of any of the hotels in Kamikochi. The outside porch is amazing. I believe there might have only been one or two other rooms taken when we were there and we were appreciative of the efforts made to make us comfortable.

Vegetarians/Vegans: LOOK NO FURTHER - This place is amazing!

Reviewed By gcincinnati

It's not just about the food. It's the ENTIRE PACKAGE. I cannot recommend this place strongly enough. We have lived in Japan for seven years: we are from the US and UK, speak English and some Japanese, have tattoos, and are vegetarians. It is HARD to find places that can accommodate our dietary needs AND allow us to use the public baths. All of the pluses for us: It appears to be family-owned. They speak ENGLISH, and well. They provided SUPERIOR omotenashi (customer service). They can accommodate vegetarians AND vegans. Oh, you have tattoos? It's cool; you can still use the public bath. It's located right along the river, and you can choose to have a river or mountain view (the backside), and both are excellent. The bedding was amazing. The bath was great, clean, with good shampoo and conditioner, and provided hair dryers. It's a mountain lodge. It's all old-wood and exposed beams in the public areas. It's gorgeous. The cafe near the entrance is excellent! Gifts and great drinks and snacks right there! * When I say 'omotenashi,' I mean Japan's brand of customer service. Most of the ryokan we have visited in the country have gone above and beyond what we were used to in our home countries in general. But the major thing that stuck with this lodge was the phone help. I'm a pretty obnoxious prospective guest. I have a ton of questions, and although I can get most of them out in Japanese, it's important to me that the place speaks at least a little English if there are any issues. Besides being happy to speak with me in English on all three occasions that I called them, the owner helped me work out how to take advantage of the Go To Travel discount. He didn't have to do that. The owner gave me specific instructions on where to go on their website to get the discount. Because of him, we got a stellar room with an excellent view (33!). Otherwise, we would have got a budget room on the English-language site since that's all that was being offered there. The food was the best we've had in our time traveling around the country. It was as if there was an actual team of vegetarians in the kitchen, making spectacular, diverse, and creative meals for us specifically. It was all so good. The location is right across the bridge from the bus terminal, a 7-minute walk once you step off the bus (cars aren't allowed in Kamikochi). You are right in the middle of all of the trails - 3.5 km to each end of the area. You can walk left one day and walk right the next. It's all walkable. The sound of the river definitely put us to sleep each night, and the bedding was fine. We were extremely comfortable over the two nights/3 days we were there.

Excellent Hotel in Kamikochi

I give this hotel an "Excellent" simply because we loved it. If you are in Kamikochi and you stay here I hope you love it too. I recommend that you get off the bus at the Imperial Hotel and walk to the hotel from there. It is much closer than the main bus station. The hotel is right in front of the river and is surrounded by nature. It is not a high traffic tourist spot. Amazing place. The day we arrive it was raining and cold. The hotel offer ponchos, umbrellas, etc...hot drinks and snacks in the lounge almost all day. We arrive at about 10:00 to drop our bags and did a pre check-in (check in time was 14:00), but we came back at 13:00 since it was cold and raining and my wife and 8 year old did not want to walk anymore. However our room was ready so we settled in and loved it. The room was a corner so it was bright, and we had a view of the river and a tree with birds in it. Great. The onsen opened at 15:00 and felt great. It has an inside and outside bath. Not big but just felt perfect. Everything was very clean and well maintained. Dinner and breakfast buffet were just great. My daughter has allergies and her food was perfect. The service was always friendly and excellent. Night time stars were amazing. Kamikochi is beautiful. Great hotel in Kamikochi.

Decent ryokan in a great setting

Reviewed By railtripper333

Stayed two nights here in late February, there seemed to be many guests staying for snowshoe trekking (through the Kama tunnel and beyond) We didn’t come with the right type of boots, so we missed out. Coming by car, we were helpfully advised in advance to hire a 4WD, as the mountain pass (Abō Pass - closed in winter to all but hotel guests and staff) from the main road can get icy. The setting high in the mountains is fabulous. The big windows in the lobby has a fantastic view on a clear day. Our twin room was a lot smaller than we’re used to in a ryokan, but the view of the mountains made up for it. No en-suite shower or bath, but the onsens downstairs were very adequate. I loved the bird feeder next to one of the outside baths - birdwatching and bathing, what joy! (On the downside, the outside onsen wasn’t quite hot enough for me in February on a snowy day). Overall, a good mid-range ryokan catering for hikers and mountain lovers, with decent facilities, meals, and a great view.

Tranquil Parkside Resort

Reviewed By RandomMistakes

My wife and I spent 2-3 days here over the summer. While getting here on public transport is definitely a journey and a headache, once you're here, this is an amazing, relaxing, serene place to stay for a weekend. The hotel is a bit older, but there are very few options if you want to stay close to the park, and this resort is a great choice. It's right next to a bus stop heading to and from the park, situated right along the river/pond, and it has a great walking trail if you'd prefer leaving early and hiking alone on the beautiful trail. The hotel was comfortable and the staff was friendly. The large dinner meals they included in the price were very filling, but definitely more "authentic" then we were expecting. We love most Japanese dishes, but the lake fish "char" was a bit too much for us. Oh well, there was plenty more to eat! We purchased the Standard Twin Room, but we made sure that it was facing the Taisho Pond. We had some rain, so it was great to be able to sit in the room with the window open and comfortably watch the rains roll by. If we had planned the trip during perfect weather, the Mountain side would be fine for a discount, since we wouldn't have been in the room as much. We never actually used the Onsen spa, since they have separate rooms for men and women and we wanted to enjoy it together. We spent most of our time hiking and relaxing outdoors anyway.

Serviceable for a trip to Kamikochi, memorable for its retro offerings

Reviewed By ijayne

While the stay here was nice, it wasn't up what we necessarily expected for the price we had to pay. The price was worth three nights what we had paid for a better ryokan in Takayama, so this was a bit of a letdown. That being said, I believe the price is really about supply and demand, and the number of hotels within Kamikochi are quite dismal - due to the uniqueness of the park. Anyway, the hotel is conveniently located 4 minutes away from the bus stop. You traverse a little wooded area, cross two bridges over small streams and you stop right in front of the hotel. Right in front of the hotel is the Asuza River, which you can experience thanks to the benches and tables set by the riverside by the hotel. We sat there in the day and had multiple monkeys curiously sit by us, and at night, when the lights are all turned off, you sit in darkness, the milky way overhead (best spotted through a long-exposure camera shot) and the sound of the mountains and river surrounding you. It's terrifyingly beautiful. The stars are truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. We were here towards the end of summer, it was supposed to be a blazing 30degC elsewhere but up in Kamikochi, surrounded by mountain peaks, it was a cool 23 to 25degc. Lovely and brisk. From this hotel, you had a 20min trek to the famous Kappa bridge on the left and a 40min trek to Taisho pond on the right. You basically get the best of Kamikochi from this convenient location. The hotel is designed really as a stopover for Japanese travellers who want to experience the beauty of Kamikochi. So it's quite frill-free. The guests are also mostly locals, elderly locals to be exact. By 9pm, all lights are off cause they are all asleep. In fact, you'll find that there'll be no staff at the front desk either. Just after dinner, we hopped down to the lobby for an evening stroll outside when we saw that they had all gathered for a slide show of pictures of Kamikochi. Everyone sat gathered in their yukatas watching this old man use his 80s-chic slideshow projector. I was blown away by the retro-ness of it all. We opted for the Japanese-style rooms, and it was properly traditional. Paper sliding doors, tatami mats and futons for the night. Everything was well kept, but old. As was the onsen that had both indoor and outdoor options. (Remember, you are not allowed to bathe here if you have a tattoo!) The food offerings were disappointing. The dinner spread was interesting but flavour-wise, average. In fact, we were left feel a little disatisfed after dinner cause it was just so...meh. Breakfast was a buffet with mostly traditional Japanese offerings and a handful of continental choices (sausages, croissants, ham etc). But that was decidely better and tastier. We particuarly enjoyed the savoury roasted vegetables. Would we stay here again, probably not. Was it memorable? Yes.

Great option in Kamikochi

Reviewed By travelmomABC

Stayed 1 night here to have more time to enjoy Kamikochi. Setting was perfect, right at Kappabashi bridge, a short walk from the bus terminal. Our Japanese style tatami room was clean and comfortable. Fantastic buffet dinner and breakfast included in the rate. The shared Japanese style bath did not get too crowded during our stay. However I did not get a restful sleep since we could hear the continuous sound of howling wind throughout the night. We visited in July, and not sure if we came at a particularly windy time.

Here and Kamikochi gracious deity are a sacred place at the location of the Kamikochi first. Please don't cross Kappa-bashi bigger bridge from Kamikochi bus terminal. 3 KM of plain hike for about about 50 minutes is needed. Please come by a backpacking. Further, I'll worry, so would you arrive at around 4 o'clock p.m. The basic equipment amenity is even. We also have shampoo and hair conditioner in Hotakadake view bathroom. Even female trip alone can be relieved. When there is a lot of baggage absolutely at a foreign way. There is also baggage keeping at Kamikochi bus terminal. When leaving it by 16:30 afternoon, you can keep it until the next day. The mountains which sparkles with the morning sun in early morning and a morning fog in a pond. and twitter of a little bird are the feature. Of course, there are only great outdoors here.
