Excellent food excellent service lovely Seating area in the conservatory, only let down were the chips which were over cooked and more like crisps, My partner who is a veggie had the fish in white wine sauce and loved it I had the steak which was cooked to perfection , I know its only chips but they just let the meal down ... Stafff were very good and friendly polite the whole ambience was perfect ....I think I was just a bit unlucky and probably got the last batch of that particular cooked lot of chips . The beer was from a local brewery and that was also very good. All in all I would go again without doubt

Great tasting food , cooked to perfection by friendly chef and served by lovely cheery staff. The tomato soup was absolutely fantastic, as were the lamb and venison dishes both served with ample delicious vegetables . The chips that accompanied the meal were just great. Would have loved to have a sweet but just too full after such generous plates. A lovely little place to enjoy friendly service, terrific food in cosy surroundings.

This is without doubt our favourite place to eat in the Stewartry. Staff are always welcoming and friendly. Service is always superb and the whole place gives off a warm relaxing feeling with quality food to match. Menus change on a regular basis and there always something different to try if you like experimenting a little. They use local produce and local suppliers although a slight criticism would be that they use Dalbeattie for their meat when there is an excellent butcher in the town which has recently changed hands and would deserve a chance. That aside the Selkirk ticks all the boxes for me.

Wanted to purchase food here just after lunch but was waiting on another family member in the shop nearby. I spoke to the fryer, explained we were going to get our take away lunch and he reassured me there was no rush, they were open all day. We all returned 7 minutes later to find the place completely shut up. Rather annoying and odd we thought after knowing customers were on their way and telling us they were open all day. Never the less we thought we would give them another try the following evening, as the reviews were very good. Most expensive fish supper from a eat in chippy I have ever paid for. Over £10.50 for a large haddock with chips. (Which was actually just two medium Haddocks.) Mushy peas were £1.30 extra each!!! Buttered bread also extra. The whole meal came to nearly £30 for two adults and a child without peas or bread. The chips were dried out and chewy and the fish pretty average. Certainly not worth the price. And I paid £1.50 for a tiny bottle of cheap lemonade. A full bottle of Coca Cola was cheaper at 85p??!! Sadly won't be visiting again, I had superb fish and chips at a nearby top restaurant for a couple of quid extra!

Have visited here a few times and yesterday tried their soup. Choice of three soups and chose parsnip and pear. Sounds odd but was excellent and thoroughly enjoyed it. We have also had their tomato and red pepper and again was first class. My wife had a cheese scone which was huge and tasty too. Coffee first class and piping hot which is lacking in many places. We were looking forward to enjoying the burger night, having visited previously and had a great experience. Unfortunately, this has turned into a family friendly restaurant where the child is king. Three families with a myriad of unruly children, bouncing on the floor, racing around everyone's tables and screaming at the top of their voices. We couldn't enjoy our meals as the waitresses were not equipped to deal with them, but did admit to finding it difficult to serve with them running around...!! With one of the owners sat witnessing all of this, there was clearly no hope of him taking control so we cut our visit short and left. It's disappointing to have to leave a negative review, but....

The Schoolhouse

Situated beside the main A75, just outside the village of Ringford and some 3 miles inland from the artists town of Kirkcudbright. The restaurant is in what was the local primary and junior school for the village and surrounding area and closed in 1977. Originally opened around 1983 as a tea-room, we are now only the third owners having taken it over in 2006. Our background is in retail delicatessens as much as in restaurant food and when you visit you will see that in the refrigerated display in the restaurant. We are proud of our food and almost everything that can be made on the premises is - the list is long but includes our own bread, all the cakes, desserts and traybakes, home cooked ham, our own jam, cranberry sauce, hummus and much more. We are open from 10 am serving food all day through to last orders at 6 pm ( 4 pm some days in the winter months) but closed on a Wednesday. Whilst we are open all year we do close for a break in November and go into hibernation for January.

I went to the Schoolhouse today for the first time for lunch . I had the Christmas lunch special - roast Turkey followed by homemade cheesecake. The food was piping hot (I mean hot ?) and really good. It was also excellent value for money....MoreOh yes! Our hot plates are just that, good food should be hot and that is of paramount importance to us - thus the mats placed to protect the tables. The team look forward to welcoming you back.

Had a lovely Christmas lunch here this week. Served absolutely piping hot and stayed hot till the last bite. The Christmas pudding and brandy sauce, whilst not overwhelming in size was an adequate portion.
Service was prompt and the waitresses were attentive and polite
Parking was convenient at the front door, failing that there is plenty of parking nearby in the Harbour Square.
Always worth a return visit. I will be back. Thank you.
