La Cubanita

Reviewed By AmsterdamVideo

After having spent years having a negative association with the word “Tapas”, all due to several bad experiences with Tapas restaurants serving Spanish dishes, I was quite reluctant to visit the Tapas place I heard some raving stories about. But after checking out the menu on their website, I decided to give La Cubanita a go.La Cubanita has an all-you-can-eat offer which is hard to refuse. At 17,50 you can spend all night enjoying lovely food, two at a time, with the only limit being your appetite.Making the dinner reservation was pretty straight forward using the Leeuwarden restaurant detail page on the chain’s website (add dot nl behind the restaurant name) and upon arriving I was happily greeted by a staff member showing me various options where I could be seated as I wasn’t familiar with their restaurant just yet.I chose the cozy central area around the fire - the only actual fire being that of a few candles though - as sitting relaxed on the couch felt right and more comfortable than the high seats I noticed standing by the tables. After an introduction to their way of doing the all-you-can-eat thing, I was given the opportunity to order ahead some bread with aioli and tappenade while browsing the menu for my first order. The bread is also simply on the menu (item 4) and I received a lovely turkish bread with the spreads being freshly made and of a high quality, delicious!Next up, I ordered items 19 and 29 off of their menu by writing these numbers along with the table number on a coaster and popping it in the stand. You don’t get the used coaster back later on - simply take a new coaster: as many as you like to soothe your appetite. Both dishes are bitesize where item 19 contains 4 small rolls of bacon wrapped around deboned chicken, that tasted lovely both in flavour and texture, yet were slightly on the dry side. Not to worry as bitesize item 29, the Chorizo hotdog with onion, gurkin and humus was in arm’s reach. A refreshingly new and interesting flavour overwhelmed my tastebuds. Quite nice indeed! Perhaps a little spicy.Dishes 20 and 31 were meatballs in tomatoe sauce, uniquely tender and lovely flavour with slightly spiced up tomatoe sauce, and chorizo croquettes which were my absolute favourite and had me craving for seconds!Item 24 contains of 4 Spanish hamburgers which turned out to be a little fat and they were on top of a huge slab of thick sauce, perhaps it was a very mild aioli? Using this sauce (but not too much) worked great as a counterbalance to the flavour of the hamburgers. Also in this round item 55 being the cheese croquettes, having a creamy mature cheese filling. Accompanying sauce has a fresh flavour and compensates for the salty flavour of the cheese croquettes, which might be a little much to some - but to me it was quite right!Number 26 is ‘Varkenshaas’, I guess you’d call that a deboned porkchop, along with some bacon and mushroom sauce. Nice and tender with a refined taste. This one is quite filling though!!The 30 mushrooms stuffed with meatloaf and cheese was disappointing however. It sounded so much as a winning combination as I like all of the mentioned ingredients, but this turned out to be a very bland tasting set of 4 stuffed mushrooms and the cheese was nowhere to be found so I don’t recommend getting this one.Item 18: Flambini is described as a pizza with pork. It’s however nothing special and the amount of pork very limited - Cubanita has so many better choices I won’t be ordering this again. About the same goes for item 32, fried slices of pork with a mustard sauce, which turned out to taste very common and the meat being a bit dry.I ordered another portion of number 31 as it screamed for seconds when I tried it earlier and after that delicious dish I went ahead to dessert.Dessert is not included in the all-you-can-eat formula at La Cubanita but it comes at very reasonable prices.I decided on the Dama Blanca which turned out to be huge and only cost me 3,50 Euros. Being 3 huge balls of vanilla icecream, topped with a tower of whipped cream and accompanied by a cup of hot chocolate sauce, this is what most restaurants sell as Dame Blanche, though few sell it so big for so little money.Softdrinks comes in bottles of 200ml and cost Euro 2,50. This is a normal price.La Cubanita really surprised me and I will definately come eat with them in this and possible more of their restaurants. Absolutely a great food experience and it’s so nice to try these flavours none of the other (all you can eat, or regular alike) restaurants have to offer.I highly recommend this, as I already did to my friends and family, to all of you on Tripadvisor. Are you in for a treat? Yes, you are!!

Dinner for three on a busy Saturday - amazing service, delicious tapas. 5 rounds with two items per person didn't sound very much to start with but at the end we were all satisfied with the quantity we ate. Perhaps the manchego could have been a thicker slice.

I was here with friends on a quiet tuesday evening. The owner is a warm and friendly person and you will feel at home immediately. They serve tapas with a mediterranean twist: it means that you can have the albondigas with a taste of mint and it works! I recommend this place for people who are bored of the more traditional, anonymous tapas. If you like a bit more adventure, you should go here

El Toro

This restaurant is just outside the main streets with restaurant, but well worth the extra walk. Small, tastefully decorated place with one friendly guy as host. Nice choices on the menu at reasonable prices.Modest wine list, but good quality. We shared sumptious calamares a la romanes and champignones al ajillo for starters. Then my husband had some very good spare ribs (he did not need the all you can eat, standard portion was big enough). I had some very tender lamb with alioli. No room for desert after that! Definitely recommended.
