Hanasato

Hanasato is a small restaurant, pleasantly simple set. The quality of the food is above and beyond. So fresh and top selection of ingredients. Perfect sushi&sashimi and we had a lovely Shabu Shabu with seafood and beef. It would be a straight 5*s if it weren't for the 2 coming points.. Two things that were not part of an exeptional experience: the staff is young, seems inexperienced (not hospitable) and lacks basic knowledge of the food and drinks. And because the tables are set quite close to eachother, we could literally smell the people next to us- a group of smokers- so that spoiled our overall taste- and smell experience a bit. For these standards and prices, these things should be fixed, asap.

Hock Sieng

This restaurant is located in the very center of the city and offers a wide range of Asian food, mostly Vietnamese. The dining hall is also good for larger groups. Stuff is always very attentive and helpful. Food quality is nice, particularly the size of the portions. Additionally, food tends not to be overspiced. A clear recommendation for good and easy dinner or lunch.

I have been to three Indonesian restaurants in Groningen and this one is by far the best. The "soto" genuinely tastes Indonesian. The owner speaks Dutch and Indonesian. No doubt she is Indonesian and she certainly knows how to cook Indonesian food. Recommended!

I had never been to a Chinese restaurant nefore but my colleague is quite experienced. This restaurant is not a pure Chinese restaurant it's somehow multiethnic. We took the bufet option and by following my colleague's advices I had the chance to taste a lot of different plates. The price was aprox. 27e per person and if you would to drink a draft you have to pay 1e for a glass of Heineken!!!! You should definitely go there!!!

There is a nice breeze from the far east on a small spot at the innercity of Groningen. At Cho Fah you will meet the surprising Thailand. In an exotic environment you will experience a fascinating mix of classic eastern elements and contemporary design. W

This restaurant was advised to us by our hotel. We had made a booking for the three of us and we got initially the worst table in the restaurant assigned, while many tables were still empty. We then asked for a better table closer to the open window / front of the restaurant (it was very warm that day), which we then got. The food was OK, but not as good as we expected from this but it rated restaurant. It was frankly all a bit blend. Service was OK, but not top, lacking sincere interest in their customer. But then one experience spoiled our entire experience. Our 20 year old son is very health focused and always carries a small bottle of water around. This time a small plastic “Spa Blauw” bottle. He had it next to him on the table ((see photo), but he was not using it. Also important to know that the water in this restaurant is for free. At one point another waiter then the one tending to our table, walked up to us and asked if the food was good. We were a bit surprised as this was just asked by the waiter who seemed to be the assigned waiter for our table. But then we realised what her real reason was to attend to our table, because before we could answer her question she looked at our son and like a strict school teacher berated him that it was not allowed to bring your own consumption into the restaurant. My wife and I were so flabbergasted, that we first asked her to repeat what she was saying, as we couldn’t believe it. She repeated again at the same accusing tone that it was not allowed what our son was doing and that it might lead other guests to do the same. We told her that he was not using it and that it was just standing there. And asked her why she thought he would try to cheat the restaurant out of some income, as the water in their restaurant was free anyway. What then unfolded I seldom, perhaps never, experienced in a restaurant .... she even more rudely repeated her accusations and very elaborately explained again the sound logic of their restaurant policy. I told her to stop it, that she was interfering with our peaceful and quiet meal, which we now wanted to continue (while moving the bottle off the table). This only motivated her apparently more to go on. She didn’t stop, told me it was up to her to decide when to stop and went on. I made the time-out sign with both my hands, while stopping to respond verbally to her and making the point I wanted her to stop talking to me also and go away. She however wasn’t discouraged at all and still went on. Finally she left, but then I noticed that 15 feet away from us she started replaying the whole situation to colleagues, one of who I know was the owner. I then walked up to them to ensure the owner would get the correct story. And surprisingly, the same waitress saw this as a new opportunity to make her point yet again to me. The owner then said to me, while not really interfering, “I am the owner”, to which I replied that I knew that. I expected the owner to stop her employee from again arguing with a customer, which she didn’t. She just stood there. I went back to my table and it was clear the discussion went on a bit longer between the owner and the waitress. My wife and I talked also longer about it, as we had never seen this before and remained extremely annoyed about the situation. There would have been a good opportunity for the owner to come to us and apologise for the unjustified behaviour of her staff member. Which she didn’t. Only when we left she made some kind of half apology... said something like that the waitress didn’t mean it badly, but no clear apology. The respective waitress, who from the moment of the incident had carefully avoided our table, said at the moment we left very sarcastically “and have a nice evening”, which I ignored. I see the restaurant has a lot of good reviews. Well, clearly not from us. But not only because of one bad staff member (who should not come anywhere near any service related business), but also because the service from the other staff members, including the owner, was not very warm and personal. We also thought the food was OK, but not great. Some of the dishes a bit tasteless. Ignoring the bad waitress I would have rated this restaurant average, I.e. three stars. But any restaurant owner who witnesses behaviour like we did from this waitress and then accepts it and doesn’t act on it, such restaurant and it’s owner only deserves the worst rating. In my business the customer is still king. I would never accept one of my employees talking to a customer like this waitress did. And if one of them would, I would know how to apologise immediately and how to ensure that the respective customer still leaves my business with a good feeling. This owner clearly didn’t. Dear flying Dutchman,Thank you for your feedback, Hereby our view on your comments. You start with the assigning of your table. Normally we are booked full and the table planning is made in advance, not randomly when people arrive. In your comment it might come across that we deliberately gave you “the worst table”. Which is off course subjective. People have very different preferences and as well tables in the back as in the front are booked many times on preferences. Fortunately, we were able to accommodate your request for a different table immediately. Then concerning the plastic bottle on the table. We are a full-service restaurant and that means that plastic water bottles on the table brought in by guest used or unused we cannot allow, and we kindly ask people to remove it from the table for obvious reasons. I feel that there has been a misunderstanding from the start, the waitress objective was to have the bottle removed from the table. Apparently, she reverts to use of the water instead of the plastic water bottle itself which was taken offensively by you and a discussion unfolded on a rather simple misunderstanding. Unfortunately, this was not resolved to your satisfactory and that is a pity. As you can see on many of our reviews our service is normally rated highly but in this case something went wrong. Sometimes a chain of reactions cannot be broken, not even by the owner, who again, is generally highly recognized for her service attitude. An unfortunate evening. Our sincere apologies.

This restaurant is locatedin the main shopping street of Roden. We arrived at about 18 o'clock, there were a number of take away custommers and we were the only guests in the restaurant area. We choose to sit near the window. The friendly waitress showed us the menu and served a good strong green tea and a flavourful jasmin tea. We ordered Prawn crackrs, Fu Yong Hay with large Prawns and Mi Fan with Siu Yok (roasted Pork) and Cha Siew (sweet roasted pork) . The dishes were prepared in the Chinese way and tasty, as per my Chinese wife. We recommend this restaurant.

The Dutch have a high interest in Indonesian food based on the high number of these kind of restaurants. If you have been in Indonesia the food is different and adapted to the Dutch flavor preferences. We really enjoyed our dinner at a round table and we were wowed by the excellent service. We ordered an "Indonesian Rijsttafel" and we were impressed by the broad variety of flavors. This restaurant is definitely worth a slightly further ride.
