Caribbean Food Guide: 10 Caribbean food Must-Eat Restaurants & Street Food Stalls in Tobago

December 1, 2019 Elouise Mccaul

Reviews on Caribbean food in Tobago, Caribbean. The smaller half of Trinidad and Tobago, the 116-square mile island is a top eco-tourism destination. Its rainforest has been protected since 1776. Kayak through mangrove swamps, mountain bike testing trails in the island's northeast, drift dive with manta rays and sharks, hike the Rainforest Reserve or take in the distinctive Tobago pursuits of goat and crab racing. Cars, taxis and "maxi taxi" minibuses make it easy to get around the island. Carnival sees this exuberant island at its most extroverted.

This restaurant is part of the well known boutique hotel which takes a holistic approach to living and eating. If all you're interested in is some tasty food it doesn't disappoint, even if it's on the pricier side.We went on buffet night which I think is every Friday and you get to taste some unusual vegetarian food alongside well presented fish and meat. The jazz fusion band didn't turn up unfortunately but there is a delightful garden round the back for a pre or post-prandial walk

The Seahorse Inn

Fabulous beach side dining with fresh seafood, premium ingredients, an awesome wine & cocktail list, and great personal and attentive service.

I had the pleasure of having dinner at this restaurant recently with my family. The food was great, portions we're quite large, drinks were on point, and desserts were lovely. Service was attentive, quick and friendly. Ambiance was beautiful, you can hear waves crashing on the shore. A few tips: definitely make reservations, the restaurant fills up around 7pm; if you have children, the tables have lit candles so be careful, also the ladies room does not have a baby changing area, high chairs for kids are available upon request. Be aware of the climate of Tobago, being tropical and humid: the restaurant has a lovely outdoor dining space and open verandah but with the weather, it may be humid. Overall, a fantastic experience. Would visit again.

One evening we were having trouble finding a place to eat and ended up at Caribbean Kitchen (June seems like a sleepier time in Castara than our typical month to visit : January). Enjoyed our meals thoroughly 2 of us had griddled prawns in an amazing coconut sauce and one of us had the grilled snapper. We were quite happy with our meals.

I took my family tonShore Things for lunch on a small vacation to Tobago. To say that the food was scrumptious is an understatement. The callloo soup amd pumpkin soup were fabulous. For the main dish among the four of us we ordered the vegetarian crepes, tuna, Fish quiche and beef lasagne. All came with salad and amazing rolls. And the piece de resistance was the dessert - coconut I cream with real coconut in it, phenomenal coconut cream pie and awesome lemon merengue pie. All in all it was a wonderful meal in a very relaxing ambiance. Next time you are in Tobago don’t forget to stop by for lunch.

Tobago Paradise Travel and Grill

This is a lovely little restaurant overlooking the water. We ate here for dinner and watched a couple of local fishermen in their boats while the sun set over the Caribbean Sea. It was beautiful and picturesque. When you come here everyone recommends the lobster - for good reason. The lobster is amazing! It’s freshly grilled in a light butter sauce and cooked to perfection. I had a mid sized lobster which is heaps for one person. For starters my husband had the garlic bread and I ordered the prawn cocktail. Rather than baguettes, the garlic bread is several toasted buns lathered with garlic butter. They were very tasty. The prawn cocktail is also slightly unconventional as it’s coleslaw topped with pan fried shrimp in a lovely sauce. My husband loved these. For main, my husband had fish and chips. The fish is fried in a coating of seasoned breadcrumbs rather than a traditional wet batter. We also had a serve of wedges which was a substantial portion and very tasty. For dessert I finished off with a coconut ice cream which was made by the owners auntie. It was delicious!Service is great and the lovely owner who is originally from Shepherd’s Bush, London is both personable and very welcoming. The restaurant itself is tiny, with rustic charm and only has four or five tables.Overall it was well priced with the total bill coming to around 500 TTD (@ £60) which is amazing value for two starters, two mains including a good sized lobster and dessert. There are several things worth noting when you eat here:1. The restaurant only opens if someone books a day in advance. We weren’t aware of this and tried to eat there two days running before we finally worked it out.2. The restaurant does not serve alcohol so if you would like an alcoholic drink with your meal you can bring your own. A small shop across the street sells wine, beer and spirits if needed but does not have a wide selection and is only open until about 5pm.3. The restaurant is open air and so there are lots of mosquitoes. The lovely owner lights lots of mosquito coils/ candles and has mosquito repellent if you need it - but forewarned is forearmed.4. This is a cash only restaurant so please make sure you bring enough local currency as cards are not accepted.Overall I thought this restaurant was one of the highlights of our visit to Tobago. Not only does it have a beautiful view of the Caribbean Sea but it has some of the best (if not the best) lobster that i’ve tasted. Definitely worth a visit!
