We were in Auckland for just one night and hoped to enjoy the sort of meal we don't get in Napier. When friends mentioned a great little Japanese restaurant walking distance from their home I was delighted because good Japanese doesn't exist in Napier.The menu is very much in a tapas style and the dishes are small so you have to order quite a few if you're hungry. There's nothing wrong with that but some are quite pricey. And pricey is ok if they taste good....but this is where Taiko doesn't deliver. Not unfamiliar with Japanese food - one of our party had worked in Tokyo as an expat for some years - the food at Taiko was bland. And the portions small. The primary reason I go out to a restaurant is for good food, and I am afraid Taiko was a let-down in this respect. The food was bland, the portions small and the prices high (for what you got).There were problems with the service too which were not just limited to language issues with the service staff. It took a VERY long time for the first dish to come and then they came out very, very slowly. One dish we ordered didn't came which we mentioned to the staff and it came a lot later after all of the other dishes has long since been finished or the remains taken away.This is not the sort of venue you go for an intimate dinner and the crowd was for want of a better word, "rowdy". We were placed at such a large table that you literally had to yell over the noise so the person opposite you could hear. The atmosphere was much more bar than restaurant.Auckland has many fabulous ethnic eateries but Taiko is not a place I will visit again. Over-priced, bland food and poor service made for a disappointing evening,

We visited this establishment on our honeymoon, looking for a delicious sushi meal as it is our favourite! We were a little shocked and worried at the prices of this sushi as it is double what we have ever had to pay. However, with that being said, once the food arrived I realized why it was priced the way it was. Without a doubt, this was the BEST sushi we have ever had. Generous rolls, the most incredible fresh fish. MUST go here if you like Sushi. It's just amazing! Recommended salmon avo road.Thanks Emwitz for your fantastic review! Initially called in for a very quick lunch with work colleagues and advised they were closing in 10 minutes but we were welcome to come in if we didn't mind them clearing up around us - tick number 1 for customer service. had a selection of entree size meals to share - all were amazing - beef tataki to die for, fresh and well chilled sashimi, interesting popped rice kaarage chicken and crispy tempura. Three very satisfied and happy customers who were treated very well. So much so that we decided to return the next evening due to the torrential rain and proximity to the hotel - but also due to the warm and welcoming staff. Evening menu a little more substantial with more main dishes and and bento box type meals, and we went fro a few of the above but included a wonderful salad and pork belly and agedashi tofu washed down with chilled Kirin and matcha and black sesame ice cream for dessert. Atmosphere is warm and there are various seating types depending on mood - booth, tables, floor and the bathroom are really funky too.All in all a heavily recommended restaurant for CBD Auckland - the food is sensational, but the atmosphere and all welcoming staff really made another visit inevitable next time in NZ. This is the second time i have been back, the prior being just after opening. smooth operation and well thought out lay out. Fun exciting menu easily enough shared or for one. the signature negroni was exceptional, sashimi, volcano roll, crab bao, beef short rib, goyza. sides all top notch.
