Comfortable and convenient for bike trail

Reviewed By Camda

Stayed here as on the West Coast cycle trail. Three adults in one unit (I think there are just two units total which are joined together). They don’t quite look like the photos now though interiors are similar. It was clean and comfortable and a nice outdoor area for seating was good. The units are behind the store so convenient if you want to buy food or a drink. Friendly owner. Only comment would be it is quite expensive at $200 a night with 3 adults in one room, however I think this is quite typical of the West Coast at the moment. Wifi was not particularly stable and just two TV channels.

The worst place we have ever been with the horrible host

Reviewed By Nrajaee

I’ve booked in November a standard studio with a balcony & sea view for couple of nights ( new year eve) via booking.com! The host ( Nigel) rang me a day after and asked me to cancel my booking through booking.com and just come over on the day as he can’t afford their commission! I did as requested as I felt for him! We arrived with our new born baby and instead of the room we have booked we received a disgusting place attached to barn! No view, no balcony, dirty & dusty with a portable toilet which made everything worst with its disgusting ongoing smell ? The host is an absolutely rude mad man & racist! I wish I could have record all he said and shared here! After all his offensive comments he said he doesn’t care if we’re not happy & this is what it is! Also he tried to overcharge us with asking more than what it was on booking.com however we didn’t pay which made him more grumpy! Since it was holiday season and everywhere fully booked we had to stay there but it was the worst place ever I’ve seen in my life!! Have to add he also rented out the yard in front of us to a camper van and since the place has neither curtains nor keys, we had no privacy! He disappeared in the morning & we had to deal with no hot water ( with our new born baby) for the rest of our staying! As I have booked this place to surprise my husband I felt too embarrassed however he’s all about let it go, these 2 days will go and we’ll forget this accommodation & this horrible host! He made the worst holiday for 3 of us not only with false advertising about his place which is literally a barn not standard studio but also with his abusive, offensive, racist language & loud tone!

Warm and Cosy

Lovely quiet, clean room with all kitchen facilities we needed. A great shower room, shower did tend to blast the whole wet room though. Even with a curtain. A separate bedroom with twin beds, and a really comfy bed in the main lounge. The lodge is off the main road, so it's very quiet and no traffic noise at all.

Great value in a quiet country location. Friendly greeting on arrival. Our room was clean and comfortable and the breakfast was an unexpected bonus. The location is very close to lovely Lake Brunner and well worth the drive from Greymouth.

Phenomenal Accommodation

Reviewed By bryangilchrist

It's not often that a holiday is planned around an accommodation before a destination, but after staying at The Ghost Lodge just one night, we're already planning a revisit and activities close to the lodge. Simon, the incomparable host, has renovated the lodge tastefully and comfortably. On one hand, I wish this amazing retreat was a secret we could keep yo ourselves, but we wish Simon continued success and therefore want to spread the word. I highly recommend The Ghost Lodge and look forward to the next stay!

A totally different experience!

Reviewed By Maxine R

We visited in March 2019 for one night at Perfect Strangers. We didn't know what to expect and, having read other reviews we knew this wouldn't be your average hotel. First of all collect the keys at the Canoe hut, around 10 mins by car, the keys and instructions were left outside under a stone to be picked up (people must be very honest around here!). We then went to Perfect Strangers, left the car by the side of the highway and went down the stairs (with our luggage) to find ourselves in a totally isolated place. The weather wasn't so good and there was a thunder storm during the night, but the place was totally watertight so it wasn't an issue. Inside it could have done with a clean in all the top corners (lots of cobwebs). There's no mobile or tv coverage, but there is a landline in case of emergencies and a DVD player to watch movies on the tv. There's access to a small beach, great if the weather is nice. Tips: take food and drinks to snack on, alternatively eat dinner and breakfast at nearby Punakaiki. The Perfect Strangers location is not suitable for people with reduced mobility.

A bit disappointing

Reviewed By FagamaloBA

We stayed here with a large group to attend my grandfather's funeral. The male manager was very difficult to work with and quite rude at times, acting as if we were putting him out. Rooms were damp (literally dripping from the ceiling in the bathroom of one room), the electrical power sockets were dodgy and the fuses kept blowing. The bathroom door didn't close in our room. Bed was warm and comfy and there were tea and coffee supplies in the room - when we could manage to get the kettle to boil with the power sockets. There was continental breakfast included which had a good variety. WiFi didn't reach our room which was quite frustrating as there is no cell reception. Unfortunately because of the grumpy male manager, we didn't feel able to raise any issues at the time. I probably wouldn't recommend staying there. Pub food was, however, delicious. So if you want to risk dealing with the rude man, could be worth it for the feed.
