Ron Gastrobar Indonesia

We came with high expectations, as Ron Blaauw is a renowned chef. Well, and actually that's the problem with TV chefs opening up restaurants in multiple numbers, they seem to lose control and lose the eye for details. Actually, that seems to be exactly the case at Ron Gastrobar Indonesia.Besides the eye for details, the entire concept is confusing, being the reason why the waiters need to explain the menu concept to each and every guest (I noticed that was bing the case). The appetisers seem straight forward in terms of concept, so other than some flat tastes (for instance the Ayam Goreng, very flat taste which really needs to provided sauce to give it some spice). The Duck Spring Rolls were very nice by the way.The concept of the main courses is very confusing. You can either choose by ordering family style dishes that are inspired by the Indonesian cuisine to create some fusion type of dishes. Or you can order the traditional Rijsttafel where a range or pre-selected dishes is served for everyone to share. We opted for the individual dishes and added 1 traditional dish from the Rijsttafel, namely Rendang. The Rendang was really very disappointing, it appeared it had a very dominant taste of nutmeg, and in any case it was not the Rendang that it should be (in any case not tasting at all like the Rendang I know and tasted from the times I live in Indonesia for 6 years). The other dishes also seemed to lack taste or had a very dominant spiciness to it which was then the only thing one could taste. A great exception actually was the tuna tartar, which was really nice, however the connection to the Indonesian cuisine isn't really there. The Indonesia chef that acts on behalf of Ron Blaauw seems to be very stressed in the kitchen (it's an open kitchen) and also looks very grumpy. He was continuously arguing with the serving staff.........if he would focus more on getting his dishes right I am sure his energy would be used a lot better.Again, an example of a restaurant that relies too much on the name and fame of the TV chef, without really delivering what you would expect from such a renowned TV chef

Although this shop has 1-2 small tables to enjoy some of their food on the spot, this essentially is a take-out shop for ready-made Indonesian food and ingredients for home-cooking.I was borne and raised in Indonesia and learnt to cook Indonesian food from our Indonesian maid and from my Dutch-Indonesian mother. I used to cook Indonesian food from scratch, but it was too time consuming so I then started to cook using premixed spices. But these days I am too lazy to cook Indonesian food myself, and why should I when I have the best ready-made Indonesian food available in the place I live, Amstelveen? The owner and the cook are native Indonesians, and may be also all the other personnel, though they speak Dutch very well. But the food is of really original Indonesian taste. The owner is Islamic, so no pork is cooked/served in this take-out shop. I only have one complaint, that I will share with the owner next time I come here: the meat of the meat-dishes is cut in too large pieces, as a result of which it is dry/CHEWY on the inside after cooking and the spices have not been able to reach the middle of the piece of meat. So it looks like the meat was just boiled/fried, then cut in pieces and then submerged in the sauce to save time, while it should really have been STEWED in the sauce till done and TENDER. But, otherwise, this is the place to go for real Indonesian food. Lovely people, sweet and helpful if you need advise what to order. Personally I never buy/order sate outside Indonesia/Singapore/Malaysia, as the real sate should be barbecued over CHARCOAL, and in most places in Holland the sate-skewers are fried in hot oil or put on a hot iron grill instead of barbecueing over charcoal. As this shop is open on Saturdays, they are closed on Mondays. One can also buy here the ingredients to make your own Indonesian food at home, as well as condiments to go with the food. Enjoy, it can hardly be any better than here!

Recommended here and by our hotel for the famous Reistafel, we made a reservation here ofr a Friday eveningout. Good vegan options and one of us had the classic menu which was also delicious. There are several bars in the city centre within five minutes' walk of this place and you can stroll along the canal from the restaurant to the square.
