Clara Maria Cheese & Clog Farm

The Clara Maria Cheese Farm and Clog Factory is set in the pastoral polder landscape just southwest of Amsterdam. This historic 160-year old farm creates an inviting atmosphere for visitors to step back into old-world charm. The original barn has been charmingly transformed into the wooden shoe factory and the cheese making room, with a spacious, nostalgic gift shop that has a large variety of Dutch souvenirs. Visitors are welcome to drop in for a tour and to taste a variety of our delicious, freshly made cheese.

Walking into the building, the stress from the city melted away. The first impression may be that there are a lot of trinkets for sale. As soon as you meet the staff you know that this is a special place.
William invited our son to help make a clog. This was a highlight for our 10-year old and we heard about it the rest of the trip. The cheese-making explanation and tasting was memorable and well done. We appreciated the hospitality and friendliness of everyone. The petting of the cows and calves is "on your own." The staff will happily tell you stories of the animals when asked.
The generous sharing of time, expertise, and stories made this a family-friendly outing that we loved.
If you are cheese lover, the gouda drying racks will feel like cheese heaven. The different flavors are magnificent.
You can email Clara Maria and arrange for a guided tour, which we did (no cost). However when we got there the farm was largely empty since the tour group had just left. So it was just our family for the clog making and cheese sessions.
We rented a car from Amsterdam to stop here on our way to somewhere else as I had read that a bus from the city can take a while. It was easy to locate with the car's navigation system.

What a great museum! It's an operating windmill, pumping water every day. The 10-min walk took us through a picturesque tiny village. Our tour guide was nice and very informative. She grew up locally and it was obvious she loved the area. Even my teenaged niece was fully engaged.

Prepare your visit: Go to the Google Play Store/Apple Store and download the IZI.TRAVEL app. Open the izi.TRAVEL app en click on the compass button on the lower left side of your screen. Type in 'Aalsmeer' via the search bar and open the Royal FloraHolland audiotour. Have fun! Our location at Aalsmeer is the largest trading centre for plants and flowers in the world. And it's just a stone's throw from Schiphol airport. The earlier you get here, the more you see. From the Visitor Centre, walk across a gallery through the auction complex. At the end of the gallery, you'll arrive at the auction halls where you'll see the flowers come before the auction clock. As you walk around, you'll find information panels which explain - in four languages - the auction process and the activities you'll be watching. There's no need to sign up for this tour in advance. You can also explore the auction with a professional guide. Reservation on the website, extra charge.

It was worth it to get up early to get out to the auction while the action was frenzied! It was a beehive of activity! It was hard for us to take our eyes off of the floor with all of the rapid and precise movements. Like a synchronized orchestra. And the warehouse is like a city onto itself. So glad we finally made the effort to go on this trip!

I come here regularly with my nearly 3 year old and she can literally spend about 4-5 hours here!!! It's free entry and well cared for. There are goats and baby goats, pigs, horses and chickens. You can feed the goats (20c for food and 50c for milk). There is a great playgroup and a fab restaurant and organic store. Highly recommended day out!!

Anne Frank House

Due to renewal work, until 1 July 2018, all visitors must purchase an online ticket with a time slot in advance. Tickets are made available on the website www.annefrank.org two months in advance. The Anne Frank House is a small museum with limited capacity. The demand for tickets is far greater than the number available, so there may be no tickets available for certain dates. We hope you can find a suitable date and welcome you in the Anne Frank House.

A must see attraction in Amsterdam. If you only have time to do one thing in Amsterdam, this is it. Booking in advance is highly recommended otherwise you'll be queuing forever and wasting precious sightseeing time. As it turns out, when I went, there was no other option but to book in advance online, but I believe it's back to the normal booking procedures from May onwards. If there are skip the line tickets, book them - it will be worth the extra cost, believe me. People on my coach tour had queued 5 hours in the past to get in (I booked this independently, it was not part of the coach tour). Absolutely crazy. It's a very popular, busy attraction, so booking in advance is essential in my opinion, and I would even say booking skip the line tickets is essential.
The museum had an excellent audio guide. The audio guide and literature available at the house were interesting, informative and concise - you weren't overloaded with information, it was easily digestible. There were a lot of photographs of Anne and her family at the museum, which I was surprised about - I would have thought they'd all have been lost in the war. It showed her as a normal, happy young child with the life that most children have. Just normal. A happy, average family. That made you really think about her situation. How one minute she was enjoying her life as normal, and the next she was hold up in these small rooms at her father's workplace, unable to go outside, or even look outside for fear of being seen. Horrendous. I would have gone mad holed up in those rooms, which the Frank family also had to share with another family.
As well as family photographs, there were also other artefacts belonging to Anne and her family available to view at the museum.
At the museum shop, you are able to buy a copy of her diary. The diary is available in many different languages in the shop, including Welsh (available on the 'other languages' shelf). I look forward to Reading my copy of the book, which was translated into Welsh by Eigra Lewis Roberts, this Easter weekend.

This is the local shopping mall/centre for Amstelveen. It is spread across several buildings with no less than 9 entrances/exits. It has a Albert Heijn (bottom level) full grocery story with loads of main stream stores such as Hema, Etos, Starbucks, Kruidvat, and many clothing and shoe stores. Ensure that you download the FREE app for the shopping centre, it entitles you to free parking and discounts at a lot of the stores. It is also a Pokemon Gym (Im not even sure what this means or that people actually play this game?!?) which means that every weekend loads of people stand around in the way playing Pokemon, apart from this its excellent. Most stores also have their own discount/savings card, be sure to ask for their card. There is also plenty of bicycle parking. Market day is Friday all parking is limited (car and bike) and the market fills to entire centre area. There is a play area for children and a junglegym outside the shopping area. After Amsterdam's crowdy touristic places, this neighbourhood was a great place to take a walk around and have a efw drinks. You may absolutely make the canal sightseeings here. During winter period most of the canals were frozen and it was a nice experience to walk on them. Do not forget to visit local markets.
