We dined at night and all chose the special. This was "bobotie" which is a South African spiced dish comprising curried minced beef topped with a souffled egg and served with rice and an accompaniment of mango chutney. This was very good indeed. The chilli spice made it quite hot. I found it to be exceptional in taste and value for £12.45.My dessert was the Alpine hot Chocolate. This was meant to be eaten and not drunk! The centre is a chocolate fondant. Very good at £3.30.We also stayed there. The decor is a little dated. My bathroom was en suite with a good shower over the bath. There was a T.V. in my room but was inoperative due to not being able to pick up a signal. Car parking is in the town square situated in front of the hotel.

This hotel is a little run-down and we experienced both ends of the spectrum. Our first room suffered from poor sound insulation, and - due to noisy neighbours - we had a poor night's sleep. The room itself was dated and definitely not 'luxurious', despite being one of their best. We moved to another room, which was a bit better, but with a very scruffy bathroom (with insufficient hot water for a bath, and a puny shower). The general standard of decoration was very low - it badly needs updating! The restaurant was delightful, with views over the charming garden, and the breakfasts - albeit expensive - were superb. We didn't experienced real restaurant food, just a bulk meal for a party - which was mediocre, but that may have been an unfair example...

Black Bull Hotel

The Black Bull in Moffat is reputed to be one of the oldest, if not the oldest hostelry in Scotland. Built in 1568 it is certainly steeped in history. At one time it was the headquarters of the Earl of Dundee and his company of Dragoons; nicknamed ‘Bloody

This Pub/ Restaurant promises on the outside to be interesting and enjoyable. On the night I visited, it was far from enjoyable. The menu is dull and very short. Short menus are not always a bad thing as it is an indicator that the food may be home prepared and cooked. As my main course took 7 minutes to hit the table from ordering, I think it may have been heated up but not prepared on the premises. A chewy steak pie, yuk!. The chips looked and tasty like they were three days old. and when it came to pudding the microwave was used to fluff up the sponge. If you want food to fill you that is hot, fine, this place will do. There is nothing special about it, not even a glimmer of a good night out. That brings me to the staff. They are young. There was no visible manager and this was the likely problem throughout and there was something going on that clearly upset them.If the management see this could they please check the portable, camping gas stove that was balanced precariously on a stairway at the back of the kitchen. How do I know this? The door was left open as the chefs/ cooks were out in the back yard having a fag!I will not go back unless things improve dramatically, it just was not worth the money.Thankyou for your review. However I must address some of the points raised here.Firstly, we certainly do not have a short menu. Our menu features a range of dishes the current one includes Gambas Pil Pil, Cullen Skink and Haggi Non Bon’s and also Scotch (quail) eggs wrapped in Stornaway Black Pudding among the starters, while the mains include Fillet steak, Rack of lamb with fondant potatoes and steak and ale pie. We rotate the menu every six weeks to keep the choices fresh and prevent boredom while keeping our best sellers available- if which the steak pie is one.Our chips are freshly cooked and certainly not three days old and we do not use microwaves under any circumstances. It is a shame you feel your experience was lacking, however I’d like to ask if you raised the issues with your server at any point. Perhaps you didn’t seeing as you have not mentioned it?We can only make an issue right if we are able to address it, therefore if you could email me on [email protected] and let me know what happened, who served you, what time/day you visited and also if you addressed it with your server and what action was taken then I can look into this situation and hopefully find a way to make things right/welcome you back, if we failed to meet your expectations. Please mark your email for my attention .JanieOwner

Stopped here for an evening meal and certainly made a good choice from all the hotels on Moffat's High Street. The service was prompt and friendly and our waitress (think her name was Skye?) couldn't have been more polite or welcoming, she deserves a pay rise! The meal itself was well presented and everyone enjoyed their choices. I'd highly recommend The Stag, we'll certainly call back if we're passing again.

The fish and chip shop is joined on to this hotel, i don't know who owns it but it wants shutting down. The fish was ok the batter terrible, but the chips were utterly inedible, grey shrivel up cold excuse for chips. Went straight in the bin. The chips must have been cooked at dinner time if not earlier and reheated. These were not fit to feed to a dog never mind human beings. My advice is keep well away

Although we had visited Moffat many times, this was our first visit to the Annandale Arms restaurant My starter of Cullen Skink was excellent and the portion was just right. For our main course, my partner chose the fifth and chips and again, it’s was cooked and presented perfectly. I had the flat iron steak with chips, and two sides of peas and mushrooms. The taste was superb.Service was good and the girls who waited on our table were friendly and attentive. The prices are good as well and I have no hesitation in recommending this restaurant whatsoever.

The Star Hotel Restaurant

Reviewed By Sportypants

We were unsure where to eat when on an overnight stay in Moffat. Places we looked at seemed quiet then we stumbled across this hotel. It was busy which was encouraging and as we walked in it seemed cosy and inviting. Staff were very friendly which is important and we felt very welcome here. I had the macaroni cheese and it was fantastic. I never thought anything could eclipse the macaroni cheese served on Calmac Ferries but the Star Hotel’s did!! My partner had the beef burger and was also impressed with the quality of the meal. So, in summary, great food, old prices and friendly service. I would return if I was back in the area.
