Papamoa Beach is a suburb of Tauranga, located about 11 kilometres from the city centre. It is the largest residential suburb in Tauranga, having a population of 20,091 at the 2013 census. It is bordered to the west by Mount Maunganui (east of Sunrise Avenue and Hibiscus Avenue), the east by the Kaituna River (separating it from the Western Bay of Plenty District) and to the south by State Highway 2. Papamoa Beach has 16km of white sandy beach stretching from the boundary with Mount Maunganui in the west to the Kaituna River in the east. Widespread settlement of the area did not start until the early 1980s and prior to this Papamoa Beach had been largely a rural area. Once a small and tight knit community, many of Papamoa Beach's sweeping paddocks have been swallowed up by urban development. Papamoa Beach is currently one of the fastest growing suburbs of Tauranga, with many different subdivisions developing concurrently on different blocks of land on the fringes of the suburb.

Admittedly we did arrive at this bar around early on a Friday afternoon, so we couldn't have expected the place to be pumping. In saying that, the Happy Hour had been open an hour already so we were a little wary when we found ourselves standing in a deserted bar. Still, the barman was welcoming, and gracious - mixing some delicious cocktails, and checking in on us regularly. My only complaint is that the menu offered a special price for ordering a cocktail and a plate of edamame beans. However, when it came time to pay we had to pay full price for both items (rather than the special price) since the barman explained that the cash register dictated the prices and he wasn't able to edit them. Hmmmm. Not a huge deal, just a little inconvenient.Hi TeaIanSorry to hear your experience wasn't 100% satisfactory, the bartenders response was wrong and we apologies for this. I lived in the United States my whole life before coming to New Zealand five years ago. Before coming to Tauranga, we ate Vietnamese all the time, in New York City, Delaware, Denver....my husband worked with immigrants from Vietnam who cooked for us and who told us of the best restaurants to try. Rice Rice Baby is NOT authentic by a long shot. We have given this place two chances and it did not impress us at all. I had the spicy prawn stir fry and it tasted awful... Frozen peas and frozen corn, terribly flavored rice. The beer drinking chicken was awful. Everything was overpriced and the portions underwhelming. Cool atmosphere and friendly staff, but doesn't make up for the fact that the food was just not good and nowhere near authentic. If you want a more authentic and more affordable option, go a few doors down to Hello Banh Mi, run by actual Vietnamese immigrants who know what they are doing in the kitchen.Hello mythicalmel, I'm sorry you were left disappointed with your Rice Rice Baby experience. Please understand that one of the owners (who is also the head chef) and three quarters of our kitchen staff were born in Vietnam and all the dishes on the menu are their family recipes passed down through generations. My wife and I have just finished dinner here and it was beyond superb. Small place but packed on a Monday night which is testament to its authenticity and quality.Chicken satay for entree and beef massaman for dinner washed down with a glass of red and a couple of beers.Great taste and big serves at a reasonable price.Owner and staff were very friendly.If youâre in Mt Maunganui and enjoy Thai food, definitely give this place a go.

WOW - some of the best food I have had in Tauranga. The cocktails were fabulous we had the plum whiskey cocktail which was served in a smoke some. Really made the whole experience fun. The food was fabulous nothing to fault. The pork skewers, duck leg bites, Peking duck bao bun were some of my favourites. But The sticky crispy fried chicken was the best fried chicken I have had. The flavours were out of this world. Great food, amazing atmosphere, very impressive cocktail list. Will definitely be coming back sooner rather than later.

There are normally a few different dumplings available - siu mai in three or four flavours and some regular dumplings that can be steamed or fried. They're perfectly reasonably priced and generally perfectly OK if nothing particularly special. Occasionally odd "fusion" flavours turn up (chicken and cranberry and others) but they are possibly not as good as they are interesting. If this sounds unenthusiastic I should mention that I do eat and enjoy their food quite often but after much time in the East I'm a bit picky with dumplings.

After a few poor experiences earlier this year we decided to try again. I am so pleased that we did as our last two dining experiences have been splendid.The food was beautifully presented, freshly cooked, delicious and flavourisome. Customer service was faultless.My recommendation is for people, like us, that have had a prior negative experience, to revisit Canton Kitchen. There has been a marked improvement in the standard and quality of the dining experience.

We had some visitors and wanted so green curry. Ordered four to go. Wow the sauce was absolutely fantastic and guests thought so too. The only comment which we all said at the same time .....not enough chicken in it and frozen veggies used ....would have been nice to have had fresh veggies and a bit more chicken. I would have be disappointed if I ordered prawns and the quantity was the same a chicken.....maybe have taken it back.$19 for chicken and $21 for prawn.!!!!!

This was my first visit to Great spice Papamoa East and was totally impressed all round. Excellent service, great menu, every dish a taste sensation.
