We had a delightful lunch here.Nice out-of-the-way location on esplanade. Neat cosy well lit restaurant with gorgeous outdoor sitting area for fine weather days. Service was friendly. Casual local atmosphere. Not a posh city restaurant. It reminded me of real small town restaurants in Japan. Food was just as I remember. Fresh and lovingly prepared, with perfect balance of flavours and textures. A delightful experience. Thank you so much to the team at Midori Japanese restaurant. :)

Enjoyed the takeaway food I had. However it was not as hot as it could have been as after the 10 min drive home it was almost cold. However it was still a tasty meal after a quick warm up.

Our expectations were low when entering a Chinese restaurant in Oamaru as experience has taught us that the menu is usually very kiwised and rather bland in provincial towns. We were pleasantly surprised to discover that they had introduced an additional menu that focused on more traditional and authentic Chinese dishes. All dishes that we tasted from this menu were full of flavour and represented good value as the servings were generous. This restaurant also caters for large tourist groups which arrive by the bus load and tend to swamp the operation for the 45 minutes that they have to be fed and watered. If you time it wrong your meal could take a little longer than anticipated as these groups tend to take precedence over other customers. The service staff were good and knowledgeable.
Top 10 New Zealand food in Oamaru, South Island, New Zealand
We have eaten here three or so times (for lunch) and have never been disappointed. Service is fast (certainly in the absence of tour buses (which we have not yet experienced)). Wouldn't hesitate to dine here again when pining for Chinese food ....

Visited this establishment for a take away as it was a wet day and we were on a day off. As we were standing outside we could hear the female staff member screaming at the male chef, pity we cant understand Chinese as she was giving it to him, We decided to enter and save the poor fella and decided to order a chicken special fried rice, Mongolian beef and some spring rolls. Had these dishes hundreds of times, here and abroad. Firstly the spring rolls were as expected for 12 for $6, they were crispy and contained vegetables and no meat filling, expected at that price, still quite ok. The disappointments were yet to be tasted, the chicken fried rice was honey chicken balls on top of a rice base, what was special about the rice, im yet to discover, basically it was plain rice with some herbs for some colouring and flavouring, the rice was gluggy and not nice at all. The HUGE disappointment was the Mongolian beef, hidden amongst the mass of disappointing noodles were these tasteless gems of beef with no flavour. Tomorrow the dogs are in for a treat for their dinner. Bon appetit my pets.
