I visited Shigisan during Christmas and I stayed at Shigisan Kanko Hotel. The hotel arranged a shuttle to pick me up at the train station and the check in was very easy. There were two onsen pools for the guests and both breakfast and dinner were included in my booking. The food was delicious and the service was great. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone who visits Shigisan!

Incredible Experience

Reviewed By GC-1990-A

Stay here for the location! The hotel itself is nestled amongst a buddhist complex of cobble-stone, lamp-lined paveways weaving through mountainous views and temples. The hotel is a simple ryokan, very quiet and secluded. We were provided a full multi-set meal each night, cooked by a personal chef - absolutely delicious. Quiet onsen below. A must-do if in the area and looking for an experience like no other.

We loved this ryokan

Reviewed By bangkokcassidy

Not many current reviews for this 100 year-old ryokan. There were other Western guests the nights we stayed, but most of the clientele were Japanese. We liked: 1.) the location. It's a 10 - 15 minute taxi from the Oji train station. (Taxi queue just outside the station). Taxi fare is 1,600 Yen. The hotel sits on a hilly area, thick with trees and a few local houses. Wonderful views. Nara is on the far horizon, and Shigisanchogo-ji Temple can be seen nestled in the trees nearby. An easy 20 minute taxi ride took us to the Horyu-ji Temple area. Cost, nearly 3,000 Yen. 2.) We loved the room, Japanese style, which looked newly refurbished. Quite large, with entrance area, sitting room, separate sleeping room, (mattresses on the floor), and a terrace overlooking the forested hills that surround the hotel. We did not get the in-room hot bath tub, which is an extra cost. Bathroom had double sinks and a very good shower, Again, everything looked new. Only quibbles: no comfortable chairs to sit in. The tatami mat floor is OK, but it's not for sitting. No English language channels on the TV, but that's common in Japan. 3.). We loved the evening dinners that come with the price of the room. Top quality Japanese formal dinner, different each of the three nights we were guests. Service is delightful, but English is quite limited. Breakfast is also Japanese style unless you request the 'Western-style" breakfast, which is only OK. We were charged extra for hot coffee. Japanese tea is included. An excellent stay and we would love to come back. This area has quite a lot to offer, including very convenient train service from Kyoto and Osaka. Less than 20 minutes form the Oji station to Tennoji Station in Osaka. Highly recommended ryokan.

Stayed one night and did some touring around. Very pleasant new onsen bath tubs one big inside one, one semi inside, one outside. 3 trees、maple leaves are peak red, autumn season, beautiful at night with lighting up. Included dinner are gracefully set up. Included breakfast are mainly Japanese style, only has simple bread and jams, no problem for me since I like Japanese breakfast. We had a large Japanese style room which normally accommodate 6 guests. Clean room with toilet and washbasin, no shower, we all used the onsen bathtubs on level one, around there has some entertainment, table tennis, massage chairs, ring throwing. Enclosed smoking room. Christmas decorations are out too. As foreigners, you must present your passport for checking in, they are quite restrict on this one.

I want to go back! The room was spacious with a nice smell of tatami mats, a clean bed, and a clean bath with a Miraburu shower head. The room was spacious with a nice smell of tatami mats, clean bed, clean bath, and the shower head was Miraburu, which I was very happy to use. The bathroom was clean and the shower head was miraculous. The packaging of the toothbrushes and hair elastics was very cute. In addition, the persimmon leaf tea from the vending machine in the hotel and the ice cream (almost like sorbet) made with ingredients from Nara Prefecture, which I bought after taking a hot bath, are delicious. The drip coffee in the room is also from a coffee roaster in Nara Prefecture, making it a luxurious space full of the charm of Nara Prefecture. I'm sorry for the long preamble, but the food! It's superb! We had the "Special Monzen Kaiseki". I was told that it was supervised by Mr. Kandagawa, and it was a feast for the eyes and the palate, perfectly matched with the local beer and sake. The staff were all very friendly and helpful with smiles, and the timing of the food delivery was very good, making us feel very comfortable. The menu changes every month, so I am looking forward to the next one. Lastly, the Horyuji tour was excellent. Thank you, Mr. Nakae. I couldn't make it to the 5:00 p.m. lecture this time, so I would like to attend the next one. The inn also has a large bathhouse, souvenir shop, and many other attractions that I can't even begin to describe.
