Comfortable stay and Excellent Staff

As usual, Japanese are very friendly and helpful. Even though they know you do not understand Japanese, they would still keep on explaining to you in Japanese or in their very limited English. This hotel do have a Chinese staff. This help a lot. The Spa is comfortable and my wife and I enjoy soaking in our in-room outdoor bath tub. It is cold outside and the Spa water is warm. It feels wonderful. We take breakfast and dinner option in our stay. Breakfast is fine and we like it many much. However, the dinner is just kind of ok. The atmosphere and setting are very good. Considering the price paid and the food. I would consider it is only satisfactory.

Relaxing rotenburo

Reviewed By Simon L

Chikutei is in an old town, Mimasaka, buoyant and popular in the 1960s. Streets are quiet with many run-down shops but for a peaceful and relaxing stay in a Japanese ryokan with inside onsen (shitsunai onsen, male bathing facing the township below, female bathing not having a view) and outdoor onsen, Chikutei is a great choice. Fantastic outdoor onsen (rotenburo). Near entrance to female rotenburo is waiting room with tatami floor, gas stove and open-coal pit (irori). Dinner and breakfast can be included. Great shabu shabu and sashimi.

【5 REASONS TO STAY at Kifu no Sato】 #1.A vivid appreciation of the seasons:All aspects of traditional Japanese culture derive inspiration from the respect and appreciation for the unique qualities each season brings. The seasonal flowers and food at our ryokan set the scene for your authentic Japanese experience. With the change of each season, so the menu changes to reflect the best that Okayama has to offer in fruit, vegetables and speciality fare. #2.A chance to taste some of our long-treasured Japanese traditions at their best:It is rare to find a ryokan with tatami mats spread throughout the entire facility including the elevators. They are made of woven soft rush straws and walking on them without shoes is said to give gentle stimulation to the pressure points of the feet keeping you healthy and relaxed. To freshen up after a long journey, you can dip into one of our open-air natural hot spring baths while admiring the garden in the daytime or under the stars at night. #3 The comfort of our guests is our priority:With comfort in mind, we offer an exclusive selection of amenities such as a "pillow menu" (to suit your sleeping needs), robes, massage/health treatment, and all our furniture, Bizen pottery and glassware are produced by local artisans. #4 Ideal location for visiting many must-see spots and full of hands-on experience:Yunogo is central to a wide selection of places of interest, where one can learn about and experience traditional crafts such as pottery and carpentry, visit art galleries and museums, and witness and try your hand at a "samurai" martial art. #5 Samurai culture: Whereas Kyoto is known as the cultural and spiritual centre of Japan, Okayama can lay claim to strong association with traditional samurai culture, thanks to its history of sword making in Osafune Town and prominent historical figures such as Miyamoto Musashi.

Good overall experience

We chose to stay here for one night during our drive from Osaka to Hiroshima (2 hours from Osaka to Yunogo, and another 3 hours to Hiroshima), and it was a good choice. At least when you base it on price, Kifu No Sato has no peer among ryokans in the area, so we felt it was as good as it'll get in Yunogo Onsen. Yunogo is a sleepy Onsen town that has either seen better days or is in the process of building up (not sure) - I'd bet on the former. There's not much to do, so I wouldn't consider it to be a destination in and of itself (unlike, say, Kinosaki Onsen or Kaga Onsen.) Kifu No Sato itself probably doesn't merit a visit for the sake of staying there, although if it was located in a most developed Onsen town, it would be a worthy option even among the better ryokans that might exist. Overall, we had a pleasant stay. The building itself is up there in age, and it's not old in a good way. It's a (somewhat faded) yellow-colored building that is not particularly attractive. There is also no garden - just a parking lot up front and then the main building (where everything is located in) just behind it. It gets better, however, as you approach the building, thanks to some tasteful Bonsai and Ikebana arrangements throughout the property, beginning with the outdoor entrance. We stayed in the Hiougi (Leopard Lily) Suite, which is the highest grade room at Kifu No Sato and measures 75m² in size. It felt more spacious than the specifications - there were two separate living rooms in addition to the bedroom, along with a bathroom (with dual vanities) and both an indoor and outdoor Onsen bath. On paper, everything looks up to snuff. In reality, it was also quite nice. The Suite was tastefully decorated, and the furnishings were of decently high quality. Given the age of the ryokan, it wasn't too shabby at all. It doesn't scream "luxury," but it's definitely a comfortable and spacious enough room to relax for an extended period of time. The dining experience was very good. The main thing we appreciated was the ability to dine in our own room - something that is increasingly hard to find, even in the very best luxury ryokans in Japan. The food itself was also pretty good. Nothing was particularly creative or awe-inspiring, but they definitely used high-quality ingredients, including locally renowned produce (such as Okayama Black Sesame.) Although Yunogo is about 90 minutes away from the Sea of Japan coast, they were able to serve "Zuwai-gani" (Japanese Snow Crab), a delicacy that is available between November and March each year. And it's not cheap! Several Crab dishes were complemented by various Appetizers, Sashimi, Tempura, Vinegared Octopus and Beef / Shrimp dishes, and everything was prepared very nicely. It wasn't particularly memorable, but we had a satisfying meal nonetheless. The same can be said about the breakfast. All dishes were fresh (and freshly prepared) and healthy, with a good variety of small dishes as is common in ryokans. All in all, we have no complaints regarding the food offerings. Is Kifu No Sato a destination ryokan? I wouldn't go as far as saying that. However, if you happen to be in the area, I'd be hard pressed to find a place that approaches the level of accommodations, food and service that Kifu No Sato manages to offer - all at a price that won't break the bank.

We stayed here on the second night of our three day excursion in the prefectures of Hiroshima and Okayama. We chose this location in Yunogou Onsen because of its proximity to Tsuyama City and the onsen known as one of the three most famous onsens in the historic Mimasaka area. We selected this restaurant as it had reasonably good reviews. I booked the hotel as a package with the air fare from Tokyo. We were greeted by a hotel staff when we were parking at the car park who offered to carry our luggage to reception. I noticed that the hotel was not that modern but was happy with the quiet atmosphere. Our room was very spacious, so was the onsen bath, which had an outside bath (rotenburo). The onsen bath was clean and very relaxing. Dinner was served together with other guests in one of their large dining rooms. The chef course was plentiful, starting with assorted appetizers, followed by a cold abalone salad, a black bean bean dumpling in a soup, an egg pudding (chawanmushi), a meat and vegetable grill on the table and finally rice, miso soup and pickles. The futon bed was comfortable and we had a good night's rest. The breakfast was very light and suited us. The staff were very helpful. Overall we enjoyed the stay.
