Fountain Of Neptun

The statue of Neptune was put up in front of Batumi Drama Theater in 2010. The monument consists of 5 fragments. In the center there is located the statue of Neptune on a pedestal. The statue is surrounded by a fountain representing 4 figures of mermaids. The original of the statue is on a central square in Bologna. In 2011, the Neptune Statue was gold-plated.

Since 2010 Batumi, as well has a fountain of Neptune following the example of cities like Florence, Rome, Madrid and less exotic places like Poznan. Perhaps surprisingly Batumi has chosen a copy of the one in Bologna. A nude Neptune sculpted in 1567 by a famous Flemish artist named Jean de Boulogne also known as Giambologna who spent most of his life working for the wealthy Medici family. It is a fantastic piece of art in mannerist style, but very much influenced by Michelangelo's effort to revitalize the examples of classical antiquity. The original in Bologna is a bronze and desperately in need of a make-over. The Batumi Neptune is gold-plated since 2011, perhaps not the best material for a sculpture of this kind. However, the features of Neptune, god of fresh water and the sea are not jeopardized. Water is spraying from the breasts of four mermaids and from the mouths of fish held by putti. A great sight.

Monument Fountain Falcon and Pheasant

Reviewed By JnVSydney - Greater Sydney, Australia

The monument symbolises the story/legend of the founding of Tbilisi. King Vakhtang was on a hunting party within the gorge area, his falcon caught a pheasant, and with it plunged into a hot spring, both birds died in the heat of the water. King Vakhtang was so impressed he built a city on the location, now the old town Tbilisi (the warm place). As told by our free walking tour (guide), which we highly recommend to get a full understanding of the city, told by a local.
