Very comfortable room, though it needed airing out when we got there

Reviewed By Mark E

I opted for an ocean view, and there was a great view with a small balcony and two comfortable beds. It was spacious and looked like it had recently been completely renovated. It did have an odor problem which required the considerable airing out the room once we got there, but it was almost unnoticeable thereafter. The resort has been around for awhile which I actually like, but if you're looking for something constructed in the last few years, that is not this resort. Having said that, renovations are actively going on and the restaurant was really pleasant with delicious food.

5 days at this lovely hotel

The hotel is beautifully designed - we had a lovely seaview villa with balcony looking directly over the beach. We swam every day in the clear water and saw a turtle ( and sea snakes) The service was outstanding and the staff look after your every need. A number speak very good English. We really enjoyed the excellent food in the restaurant - every night we were given a wonderful array of dishes. The chef accommodated my husband’s request for no meat with some fantastic vegetable and seafood dishes. We were encouraged to sample the local shochu “Amami rum” which was delicious. Thoroughly recommend this hotel for those wanting a chilled break.

Great location, fantastic staff

This hotel is right on the most beutiful beach of Yakushima. It's a bit off so you definitively need to rent a car to stay here. The rooms are ok for two, but small if you are more than that. The bed, as usual in Japan, was much to hard for me The bathroom is really small, but on the other hand, you are not there for the bathroom. The room, as well as the common areas are kept very clean. The service is really great. The women who runs the hotel only speaks japanese but they really try with Google translate to answer questions and explain things. The food is fantastic. Dinner is like 10 different japanese dishes and breakfast maybe 8. Also they tryed to adapt the menu somewhat when they saw that our daughter wanted a somewhat westernized menu. So this is of course important to know before you come here, the food is truly japanes. We love that. Not everyone does. The beach beutiful and right outside the room. Swimming is great, but not for small children as waves can get rather big and it gets deep as soon as you enter. There is some nice snorkeling just 100 meters to the right of the hotel. Very little corals but lots of different tropical fish. Turtles in big numbers come to nest on the beach and if you are lucky you might get to see that, or see the whils snorkeling. There are guided night tours on the beach for that purpose. The only thing we missed, as often is the case in japanese beach hotels, was sunchairs. Highly recommend this hotel, but think twice before you bring small children.

Tenku no Mori

Splendid ultra-private retreat in beautiful mountain setting.

Reviewed By plkmtk

It is impossible to compare Tenku no Mori with most other ultra-luxury hotels. For starters, the 123-acre site has just three private villas spread out through the property. Each villa is beautifully designed in classic contemporary Japanese fashion with extensive use of beautiful woods from the surrounding country-side. Think the opposite of bling: simple, refined elegance. We were fortunate to occupy the largest villa-and I mean large! It consisted of a huge glass walled "bedroom house" surrounded by wooden decks overlooking the valley . There was totally a separate "living room" house, again huge and well-equipped connected to the bedroom building by open wooden walkways.. Each building has an onsen and the wooden deck in front of the "living room" building contained yet a third large onsen allowing one to contemplate the beauty of the surrounding hills while soaking in the hot-spring-fed onsen. Dinner was prepared in front of a wood-burning oven in the separate lodge building by Tenku No Mori's talented chef. This was in essence a multi-course kaiseki meal prepared in front of us and just for the two of us. Talk about privacy! Each course was based on local ingredients, with the vegetable and chickens sourced from Tenku No Mori's own farm. Amongst the many dishes that we were presented with were: bonito soup; local "sweet fish" in a egg-based tempura batter; shiitake mushrooms picked on the property and served both sashimi style and grilled; satsuma age deep fried fish cake; Osumi beef; and-hold your breath- raw chicken consisting of small pieces of various parts of the chicken including he heart! (My wife opted to have her chicken pieces grilled, despite my urging her to try the raw chicken that are specially raised by Tenku No Mori.)Simply outstanding. While the chef does not speak English, a lovely woman served as our interpreter and enabled us to engage in conversation with the chef as he prepared each course. All in all, this is one of the most memorable places that we have ever stayed.
