Rennsteiggarten Oberhof

This will primarily be of interest to gardeners. If you're an alpine or rock gardener, it's of great interest. For everyone else this would be mildly interesting, but probably not worth a special stop.
It's quite easy to access off the autobahn, although the nearest exit is about 10 km from the garden. The secondary roads used to reach it are winding but good. The GPS found this with no problem.
The main focus of this garden is alpine plants, with a central area featuring several hundred different species of alpine plants. These would probably be at their best between the end of May and the beginning of July. I was there mid-June, and many plants were blooming. All plants are labelled. Signs are in German but they also give the botanical name of the plant, and the area of origin (eg. Asia, North America, etc). In addition to the rock garden area, there is an area of rhododendrons/azaleas which were in full bloom in mid-June, and an area given over to describing the flora and fauna of the Thuringian Mountains.
Cost is 3.50 Euros entrance, plus 3 Euros for parking.
There is a small cafe near the entrance with a limited menu but good food and friendly staff.
I'm not sure how many of the staff understand English. This is in a rural part of the former East Germany, so English is not as widespread as in the former West Germany. However, the signage is generally clear, so there should not be any problem for non-German-speaking visitors. The attendant at the parking lot spoke excellent English, however. Within the garden itself, most signs are in German.

H2 Oberhof

The facilities here are very clean. There is a main pool with 3-4 hot tubs and a very fast water slide. Our group conducted water sports in the main pool for about an hour, and we had a great workout. Afterwards, we had fun on the slide. The end of which is blacked out. We also relaxed in the hot tubs. Overall a great place to get warm, workout, have fun and relax when it is freezing cold outside.

Dkb Skisport Halle

Oberhof ski tunnel is known amoungst world class nordic skiers and biathletes and for good reason. Set in a sleepy village surrounded by forest if you didn't know it was there you would miss it. The ski tunnel is world class and indeed you can usually see world class skier from around the world including the German national team members skiing the loops. The tunnels are wide and have a variety of incline and the snow is meticulosly maintained and groomed. As you would expect from the Germans - everything is scheduled and works perfectly. The locker rooms/showers/changing rooms are adequate and have €1 key system for safe keeping while you are in the tunnel. The ski shop is well stocked with every kind of ski kit you could need and they rent not only snow skis etc but they have a full range or roller skis and off track roller skis for rental should you want to make use of the excellent and challenging roller ski track or forest tracks near the ski halle. They can also arrange ski lessons, roller ski lessions and biathlon for you at the shop. It was great to get some on snow training in the summer ( and watch the German national team practice) and Oberhof is a delightful village just a few hours from Frankfurt.

Little exotarium. Ok to kill some time before dinner. The animals live in little terrariums, realy sad, especially the phytons. They have spiders, insects, fish, snakes, frogs and iguanas.

Glasstube Oberhof

It is really enjoyable for tourists to go in and watch the glass ornaments being made. The man making them was very chatty and friendly but I only spoke German to him, don't know how well the store is in English. Great selection of all prices.
