Hokeriet

Do as people did in the turn of the 20th century, shop at Hökeriet (old retail shop) at S:t Annegatan 9, just around the corner from Kulturen in Lund. Here you can buy old-fashioned goods and see the old packaging on the shelves. There is a small cafeteria in the office of the last huckster. The fine collection of the old packages on the shelves of Hökeriet are well worth viewing. 'Hökare' (Eng. 'huckster') comes from the German word 'Höker' meaning 'retail dealer'. The word has been used in Sweden since early 1600. People who could not afford to do major grocery shopping came to Hökeriet and bought a loaf of bread, or cooked food, and it was here the farmers had a beer after the market. Students and workers slipped in and bought some of the huckster's wife's fine preservings and gossiped away for a while. The house was bought in 1855 by the turner Landgren. His wife opened the business in a ground floor room. The shop windows and the entrance door were added in 1891. The shelf furnishing was built in 1906. When Kulturen acquired the building in 1962, the shop was supplemented with furnishings preserved from Anna Persson's retail shop at Norrtull. Hökeriet is managed by Kulturen (Association of Cultural History of Southern Sweden) with the help of the association 'Hökeriets vänner' (Friends of Hökeriet), and occasionally you can still shop here. Here you will find fruit drinks, jam, honey, toys and of course candy in old-fashioned cones.
