Hotel Sombra E Agua Fresca

Amazing grounds, incredible breakfast, average customer service - some repairs needed

Reviewed By leoTheTaz

I have traveled over 83 countries and spend 100+ nights per year on the road. I know hotels. Here's the rundown: The good: INCREDIBLE grounds, fascinating variety of swimming pools, really great food, best EVER (no exaggeration!) breakfast spread (Grand Hyatt Singapore comes 2nd), good location. Staff (particularly the bar / restaurant staff) are sincere and truly nice folks who enjoy their jobs. The not so good: Staff are lacking in training. At this price point (~US$400/night +), I would expect little things to be done right - 3 towels for three people (not two, or 1), minimal water to be left behind as 'courtesy', and maintenance of rooms to be up to scratch. The bad: Some rooms are approaching 25+ years old since they were last updated. Gisele Bundchen slept on my bed in 2004!!! It's clear from my 10 days spent on the property(ies) that they place an incredible amount of attention on the beautifully manicured landscaping and well cared for pool (too much chlorine at times, by the way). However, little things such as reliable A/C, taps that don't fall off, doors that lock properly, and wardrobe inner walls that are actually attached are a must! The property's obvious focus on external groundskeeping over their rooms is a stark contrast. Lastly, the 'gym' at the Resort property is DISGUSTING and falling apart. Come on guys, either have a proper gym or get rid of it. The current gym is EMBARRASSING!!! Would I come back again? YES - Like the very fun / nice group of German / Dutch / Portuguese / Italian families that come back to this hotel year after year, despite the myriad 'small' issues that would drive anyone prone to 'first world problems' nuts, Pipa is an amazing and geographically / naturally blessed, the food is amazing (unless you're a vegan / vegetarian - then consider not coming at all!), and the hotel properties TRULY enable you to relax and 'disconnect' from the trials and tribulations of 'back home'. Furthermore, upon checking out, I approached the General Manager with some feedback in line with the above, and he mentioned that a 'containing full of goods from Bali' was en route to Pipa in order to update the last remaining 'old rooms' in the room. I look forward to re-visiting once the rooms have been finally updated (April 2020 estimate). However, I do hope Fernando, the GM can do a better job as it pertains to delivering true five star service / treatment at the price point being charged at this hotel. Lastly, it's unclear if they plan on adding additional 'family services' to draw more family with younger kids - a small kids play center / babysitting services would make a MASSIVE positive difference.

They do their best.

Rooms are simple, as the bathrooms. Hairdryer available. Regulating the water temperature is almost impossible due to water pressure. You can hear your neighbours. Small fridge and electric heater in the room. Staff very friendly. Breakfast is good and the lady does everything to make you make you feel at home. NO lift, 2 floors. What bothered me that the emergency route is very poorly indicated, no evacuation map in the room. Good parking space.

Very clean and organized hotel and very helpful staff. Very good breakfast. The only problem is the location,it is not very close to the restaurants, but if you go by car there are parking areas for free.

Viva Barra Hotel Pousada

Summer holiday

We really loved it. We stayed for about nine days and enjoyed the spacious room, the pool in the evening after the beach, the caipirinhas, fabulous breakfast, attentive staff, chairs and parasoles at the beach. There was Internet in public areas and it worked well, in the room we weren't able to get the best signal though, which wasn't a problem since we got ourselves Brazilian SIM cards at a near by grocery store. A/C worked well in the room which is really important when you come from a place in the world with a much cooler and less humid weather as Alagoa's. In the room there was HD TV but it was only Brazilian stations, I would have appreciated a few other international TV station options as well. We enjoyed the quietness and charm of the hotel, being distant to the busiest part of Barra was definitely a plus for us. We hired a car from the airport and we were never short of a place to park at the hotel and were able to drive ourselves to different beaches around, Maceió and places to have dinner at night. Thank you very much to Marcos and Vivá Barra's whole staff for the marvelous stay we spent at their little place of heaven on earth.

Pousada do Alto

In need of improvement !!!

Reviewed By MRDARCYLONDONUK

To start the access road to the pousada is rather complicated . Guests must use an unpaved side road at 1,5 miles up a hill. As I arrive after dawn I was not able to see any signs, there are no lights and consequently I got lost but I was helped and drove down. We were helped by Fernando when we arrived. Our room was average, nothing special. The side bed lamp did not work, the a/c does not work properly, there was no hand towels or shampoo in the bathroom. There is a fridge but we re not sure if the water was complimentary or not so we bought ours . All got rectified the next morning when I spoke to Fernando. Breakfast was locally sourced and all freshly cooked. I prefer a breakfast buffet style rather than be given what to eat. Meaning that I cannot have seconds if I wished to. The pousada grounds are pretty and well kept. The pool is good enough for a quick swim. The araras are very pretty. The access to the beach is also complicated specially on the way back as we decided to leave our car behind. A very steep hill. Dinner is included with your stay and I was delighted by the quality of the food and the taste... we loved all the dinners/meals we had. Staff is friendly and the dogs are a delight, we spent some time with them. In my opinion, Pousada do Alto is not worth the price tag. This is no the Belmond but charges as the latter . There are quite a few wear and tear in our room. The bathroom door is coming apart. The bath towels are stained, specially the towels we used to go to the pool. The access road needs improving but as I heard this is an ongoing issue lasting 18 years I do not see that changing any time soon . If your are staying at a room with jacuzzi there is no privacy as the room above have straight viewing access to it. There is no complementary water, tea or coffee ( we were not told ) but the Wi-fi is free. We were lucky enough to have the place for ourselves for two night and it felt special and private. I would not have enjoyed it if it was busy and at its full capacity. In fa f in our last night the guests next door were noisy and inconsiderate. We could hear almost everything. If you are beach people like us this is not my recommend place to stay. It is not easily accessible as the pousada is on a hill top. The views are stunning but there is a lack of atmosphere here. I would like to see more customer improvement, little touches like a complimentary drink at sunset, or afternoon tea at the deck overlooking the sea. It has great potential to be fabulous and a truly 5 star Pousada but it is not.
