10 Top-Rated Lodges in Lower Saxony

April 25, 2023 Milan Banda

Lower Saxony (Niedersachsen in German) in Germany's northwest is the country's second-largest state in terms of size and its fourth population-wise. Home to Hannover and several other larger cities, the area is treasured for its natural beauty, as well, with diverse terrain that includes coastline, flatlands, rolling hills and woodlands. Both the wildlife-filled Harz Mountains in the south and the East Frisian Islands off the northern coast are beloved by Germans and visitors alike.

Schultheiss

The Family History It seems that the Kretschmer family have service to other in their blood, for they have now been serving both the German civil, and the British military communities for three generations! The post war years were difficult for everyone, but George Kretschmer, who had worked his way up to head waiter and successfully run an establishment in Breslau and his wife Charlotte, moved to Hameln and founded on the 24th May 1952 the family business "Zum Schultheiss". The newly built building next to the Horse Chestnut lined street Ilphulweg offered the ideal opportunity! The nearby Linsingen Kaserne (Gordon Barracks) along with the fact that the town centre was less than five minutes away plus a pleasantly green "Biergarten" made a most comfortable setting for his new enterprise. Almost immediately the Britsh community took to the friendly atmosphere, which led to a boom in buisiness and a very happy phase in the life of the, as yet, infant concern, now namend Georges Bar. As time passed as it inevitably does Georges Bar was supported and then eventually run by his son Wolfgang and his wife Marlies, who with much e'lan and innovation, made great strides toward the, by now, "Restaurant Zum Schultheiss". From fairly simple homely cooking, the kitchen, under the super- vision of Marlies Kretschmer took on more and more sophisticated dishes, and with the energetic assistance of their, by now, grown son Jörg rivalled the best in Hameln. Just as his father before him Jörg, already a qualified chef, took on his Master-Chef examinations and in 1998 qualified and is now competent to pass on his own experience to young budding chefs who may now undertake their own training under his supervision. Several conversions and extensions were now to take place leading to the pleasant ambience of today's bar and restaurant, culminating in the opening of the "Hotel Kretschmer" each room, fitted out in the Bavarian style, having shower, toilet, television and telephone available. The reputation of the cuisine Zum Schultheiss has now spread far outside the boundaries of Hameln and is set fair to travel farther as the motto of the house is:.- The Customer is King

A two night visit

We chose this hotel as it was close to Hamelin, which it was. Just a 10 min walk. Our room was up about 4 flights of stairs ( no lift) The room was large bright and very clean. The beds were comfy . You could hear people above and next door, but through the night it was ok. The bathroom which came directly off of the bedroom was also spotless with a good shower. The only niggle was that there was a very small wardrobe that couldn't take trousers and had 2 hangers. Also not sure if this is a German thing but we didn't get maid service on the second day. The breakfast was as expected, Bread, meats, cheese scrambled egg , yogurt. Staff were smilie and seemed happy but they didn't speak English and we didn't speak German, which isn't too much of a problem but it would of been useful if they had a card with the times of breakfast and evening meal times ect. We had an enjoyable stay.

Realy nice hotel

Nice, kind of romantic hotel in the northern part of Germany. Uelzen is a small town with only one point of interest "the Hundertwasser railway station" so the hotel is not situated in a town with a lot of competition of attention but fairly close to Hamburg. The room was clean and of very good standard. The only drawback was that the wifi-connection was weak.

Excellent quality and service!

Friendly staff and a good chef in the kitchen made our 2 night stay in this hotel restaurant a true pleasure. Good beds in a lovely room. But sleeping on the streetside it's advisable to put something in your ears 'cause of the traffic. The curtains could be heavier to keep the early daylight out of the room, or wear a mask if this borders you.

Far from the centre but near the Hannover fairground aka Hannover Messegelande..it was quite cold in January & most of restaurants were closed, only respite was a small kitchenette in the room. The Room was pretty nice & clean. One more thing you will get your keys from the safe outside the hotel entrance with a secret code you get while booking so don't expect a reception area & someone guiding you thru.

Nice vacation resort to stay at. You can make use of the community pool that’s right outside the park. Bungalows are pretty nice and the house hygiëne is ok. Could be better but the park is working on that. Nice surroundings and sightseeings option to visit like an old castle. Near to the border of France as well..

Great place to stay for a small family

Reviewed By minimu

We stayed at this rental apartment with a big bed and a sofa bed for a week in August. The apartment is newly renovated in a very modern way, and the small kitchen is well equipped. We cooked most of the time. There are two supermarkets on the island, and you can get everything you need without paying extra money. We brought lots of food from main land, but we could have just saved time and buy everything here. Our child slept on the bed sofa and liked it a lot. There was a balcony with a table, but it was too cold and windy for us to have meal outside. There are a flat screen TV and a iPod-Dock station with stereo which we used all the time when it was raining outside. For laundry machine, we had to exchange 2.50 euro to 5 DM. If you still have DM, bring them with you! I was told that there is no WiFi in the apartment, but I got a pretty good connection by the window side facing the main hotel. The room is quiet, and you hardly hear your neighbors. If we ever come back to this island, we would like to stay at the apartment again.
