Reviewed By 702yanagYes you see lot of elephants in the property- if you looking for a safari kind of experience this is the place for you. The elephant being brought every morning on 8:30 just in time for your breakfast to "enjoy " the view. The keepers will suggest you to take photos with them and will give you fruits to feed them and of course your money for that after. Not wild in the nature, not a "shelter" only one big tourist trap. The hotel even suggested a "free" tour in a ayrovidic farm- off course nothing comes for free And the "guide" will ask you kindly for your money and to buy their very poorly products.... NOT OUR CUP OF TEA

What a beautiful setting, away from the main street, so quiet, and the pool looked fantastic. We asked to see the rooms - I wish we had stayed here instead of where we did. We looked them up on Booking.com but it says 'sold out', apparently they're in some kind of dispute with them and this must be a tactic - contact Villa Pinnawala directly - they have rooms available! Beautifully landscaped too

The hotel arranged a drive to collect us from our previous hotel, which went smoothly; however, the driver seemed more interested in taking us to the usual tourist traps, which I'm sure he was rewarded for. The hotel reception area is very grand, but all that changes after being directed to a building across the road. The entrance is dingey, and the building inside and out is fairly run down. On entering the room, we were met with a strong smell of drains and cheap air freshener, dead bugs, and a generally unclean room. The evening food was fine, although the outdoor dining space was dated, to say the least. NB* Our purpose for stopping here was to visit the Elephant Sanctuary and see the Elephants in the river that the hotel overlooks. However, the driver took us to the Elephant Sanctuary on our way to the hotel, which turned out to be the opposite of a sanctuary - elephants were chained and controlled with men with bull hooks. Rides and other activities could be purchased. We left almost immediately after entering. We discovered that the Elephants were treated in a similar manner in the river below the hotel, but the chains are hidden under the water, so its not the wholesome experience that is advertised by this hotel (and others), and I wish we avoided this hotel and this location altogether to avoid funding such exploitation.

Reviewed By MelandAshThe hotel isn’t fancy but it was definitely comfortable. We had a pleasant stay from the moment we arrived. The room was clean, staff were attentive and foot was delicious. Of course the best part was watching the elephants in the river both from the restaurant and our balcony.

Reviewed By gerdoucheWe had a very nice time there. While waiting for the dinner, we were walking around in the hotel’s garden which was also beautiful.? Peter (the chef) made us local food (kottu) even though it wasn’t on the menu. The food and the fresh juices were delicious! Lalith (the manager) is a very friendly guy too. Highly recommend!

We had trouble with police because of them!!
Reviewed By 387helenalThey didn’t explain us that we could not go outside by main street, and we had trouble with the police because of this!! We arrived last night and we asked the owner where we could go to dinner and explained us about the main street and told us to try to dinner and for lunch next day, so next day we went to have breakfast to main street and a security man told us to pay a ticket to be in the main street! We didn’t understand nothing so we told him our hotel was in that street and he didnt care. After that he called the police and they explained us that main street we should pay or they were asking us our passports!! so we told them noone on the hotel had explained us nothing!! After that the owner of the hotel told us in a very bad way we had to pay the tiket when the police was asking them to pay it because they didn’t informed us! After all we understood that mainstreet was closed for the show of the elefants and we undestood we had to pay, but before all this truble noone explained us nothing!! So very bad forms from the owner and also from the police!! Never come again!! Very bad experience with this man!!
