Personal items “disappeared”

Reviewed By monkeysafari

My parents stayed at the Grand Castle Hotel as part of an international group with a guide travelling from Australia. My mother had a number of personal items stolen from the room after the second night of their stay, that had disappeared after cleaning. It took more than a day to locate the lady who was responsible for the cleaning but she said she didn’t know anything and reception was seemingly unable to help and did not investigate. No refund or compensation or anything was offered which is simply not acceptable.

Old charming Japanese ryokan

Reviewed By DavidT643

Located in the historic town of Komoro is an old ryokan rich in history. Adjacent is the historic remains of the Komoro castle (now a nice park with many sakura trees snd a small zoo) which apparently is the only castle in Japan built below the town, taking advantage of the protective cliff surrounding it. Nakadanaso is also on the hillside on the lower end of town and just a few hundred meters from the famous Chikuma River. We stayed on the second floor of the wood structure old wing. While old it was tidy and you can enjoy old Japan. The ryokan's onsen is in a separate building and you'll need to walk up the covered stairs, around 50 steps or so, to get there. Nice indoor and outdoor baths. The foyer dressing area is rather unusual tatami, adding a different and nostalgic touch. The highlight was dinner served in a separate building connected by foot path just 50 feet away. Apparently it was once an old farm house transferred to the present location. The vaulted ceiling looked to be over 30ft high with large beams you would seldom see. The food was amazing! The chef comes from Kyoto and concocts unusual combinations of fksvors and ingredients, yet served traditional kaiseki style using porcelain of various artistic shapes and styles, complementing each dish. His broths were especially outstanding. The 5the generation owner Tomioka-san is a sommelier (loves champagne) and his wife the Okami (hotelier) are also a family of wine grape growers. His son owns/runs a winery nearby called Gio Hills, atop a hill with one of the best panoramic views of Mt Asama and surrounding mountains. The Vietnamese food served at the winery is a recommend. His pinot noirs are outstanding. Chardonnay grown by the family are vielles vignes. His ambition is to make the finest sparking using 100% pinot munier. Komoro is a charming and enchanting town, and a well kept secret.

Magical place!

What an incredible discovery! This lovely onsen-ryokan style inn is 2000 meters above sea level with a gorgeous view to the mountains. The so called onsen above the clouds, due to being outdoors, is an amazing experience to relax while admiring the nature around you. The lamp lodge also offers you various hiking adventures to get you busy during the day. The staff members are very courteous and helpful. The food is delicious and abundant. The cost versus quality is difficult to match. It is definitely a place I would come back.

Inconsiderate bookingcom and Tengu Hotel arrangements endangering travellers

Reviewed By SamuelTong

I and my wife travelled to Japan from 5 to 11 August 2017. Before our departure, we reserved the hotel “Tengu Onsen Asama Sanso” in Karuizawa for the night of 10 August 2017. It was booked under my wife’s name “Yumi Matxxxxxx” (confirmation no. 1253251258). During our trip in Japan, there was a typhoon and 2 days before 10 August 2017 (i.e. 7 August 2017), we had called bookingcom that as we were in Northern Japan at that time and we foresee that we might having difficulty in reaching the hotel on 10 August 2017 due to the weather and traffic conditions. However, the reply from the staff of bookingcom was that “the typhoon will be over and you can’t cancel the booking, etc.” I told them that it would be dangerous for us to drive there in view of the situation as well as who could be sure about the progress of a typhoon but the message I received was it’s none of bookingcom’s business. At the same time, I was told by the hotel that it didn’t allow us to cancel the booking. I needed to go there as I’ve already made the booking no matter what the situation was. I felt very unhappy at that time and indeed, I tried to go there on 10 August 2017 but still, because of the rainy and windy weather, I could not make it. I and my wife been using bookingcom for a long time and I guess you can check it from the previous transactions. I indeed felt much disappointed at your staff’s attitude as well as the indifferent manner of bookingcom in considering my situation. Whether you are going to refund or not is not a matter because I will publicize what I had experienced with bookingcom to all the travel blogs, web sites, etc. to let all people knows how caring your company is.
