10 Top-Rated Hotels in Isla Chiloe, Los Lagos Region

August 14, 2022 Rosalyn Ihle

Although it's only a 30-minute ferry crossing away from mainland Chile across the Chacao Channel, verdant Isla Chiloe – the largest in the Chiloe archipelago – is another world. Sixteen wooden churches clustered around Castro on the island's east coast have UNESCO World Heritage status, and traditional palafitos (houses on stilts) dot its shores. To the west, Chiloe National Park shelters foxes, sea lions and otters and provides unspoiled terrain for horseback riding, sea kayaking and fishing.

A great find on Chiloé

We stayed 2 nights in a room on the first floor overlooking the main square and church. The room was spacious, spotlessly clean with coffee/tea machine and various free soft drinks/choc bars in a small fridge (and it looked exactly as shown online). The staff had limited, if any, English but we managed fine when checking in (coffee served whilst doing so) and over breakfast. Breakfast was served in the adjacent cafe - cereal, yoghurt, fruits, avocado, cheeses, jams, bread, eggs, freshly squeezed juice and coffee. What more could we ask for! The staff were very friendly and could not do too much for us. Highly recommended.

Not worthy, never again

Much better options in Castro. Dated hotel, small and saturated parking. Praise you are not blocked by another car and if you do that they are able to find the owner. Breakfast is very basic and starts too late for early birds (7.30). If you're foreign, at checkout, remember to ask the invoice in USD. Does not matter if you presented the immigration paper, passport and the address you have is from another country. If you do not specifically ask for the invoice they will happily charge you 19% VAT. This is the first and only time something like this happened to me in a Chilean hotel. Room, small and very basic. Fridge locked Shower, can only be appreciated if you are into claustrophobic experiences. Will decently book another hotel on my next trip to Castro.

A curate's egg

The hotel has a fabulous setting on the cliff top with splendid views across the bay to the islands off the north-west of Chiloé Island and mainland Chile to the north-east. The main town is to the south and a small beach with interesting houses to the north. Our room had a window looking west over the grounds and the bay beyond. The room had a double bed with bedside tables and lamps, a table with TV and armchair, in what was a relatively small space. The bathroom was also small. A built-in wardrobe was just inside the door. The buffet breakfast and food were generally OK.

We stayed here for 5 nights to explore Isle de Chiloe. The hostel is spotlessly clean everywhere. Great breakfasts and a very chilled out place to relax in after big days exploring. Luis was very friendly and gave us loads of information on the island: where to visit, public buses, places to eat, etc. Great location 4min walk to bus station at the top end of town. Safe and quiet.

Charming Hotel in Picturesque Setting

Reviewed By dianapreston

This is a delightful boutique hotel in one of Castro’s historic palofitos - houses on stilts. The interior is modern, spacious, with lots of light wood while preserving the character of the original. Our comfortable, well appointed room had a superb view over the estuary. The hotel staff were extremely helpful and attentive, solving a problem for us with our travel agent about the timing of a tour and allowing us a slightly delayed check out. Highly recommended

Good value, not walking distance from town centre

Reviewed By Travelover_aeg

We liked it, probably would stay again if we came back. Good value! The rooms were spacious and the bathrooms looked clean. The breakfast was good with bread, ham, cheese, coffee/tea and jam. The hotel is not close to the city centre so if you don’t have a vehicle, it might be inconvenient to get to. Our only complaints is that: 1) the rooms are a bit chilly, it takes some time to warm up and 2) they have a kitchen but it can’t be used by guests, so you can only bring prepared foods or foods that do not require cooking.

Warm Welcome

Reviewed By NotUnfussyDiner

We arrived on a dismal, dark winter evening after a long bus journey and were greeted by a roaring fire in the wood burning stove and a very warm and cosy cabin. The owner went out of his way to help us, all other staff we met were lovely too. We woke up with the tide in, water below us and black necked swans feeding. Wish we could have stayed longer, great value for money and regular buses into Castro. A memorable stay and I would recommend.
