Old and new

Reviewed By TWHK

I stayed in the new building of Fukudaya. The old building is more than 50 years old and the new building was completed in 2016 with only 7 rooms which have modern decorations. Besides, there is in-room outdoor onsen in every room. The outdoor public onsen of the ryokan is on the top floor of this new building. If you stay in the new building, the minibar is free and they refill it every day. If you go there from Nagasaki, you can take Nagasaki Keneibus. It takes around 1.5 hours. You can take off right in front of the ryokan. I stayed there for two nights. Their breakfast and dinner were quite nice. They will prepare dinner menus for you if you stay there for more than one night.

old place but perfect

Reviewed By DGSmanila

first impression will be "bad" but after good relax in the onsen all is forgotten. Parking available at 500 yen over night Check in fast - NO English. They have all details that you might need written on big cards in English. Room is very big. Nice varenda. However smell of smoke of cigarette. Amenities - ok. Wifi - ok The onsen is in next building so you need to pass via the reception area. Also this is old place but have big windows and if you in day time you can enjoy the view. We did not took breakfast so no comment. As it is very cheap and the target is onsen I believe it give best value

Externally this property appears worse for wear but the room was newly renovated with both Japanese and Western features. The bathroom was excellent and the bed extremely comfortable. The property has a rotemburo which was excellent. There are a plethora of eating possibilities nearby and an excellent local shop which prepares great bento boxes for walking.

Nice but dated and does not accept credit cards

Reviewed By Paulo P

Not impressed by this hotel. For starters, it's the first time in my life that I had to pay for the stay in cash. I stayed in ten hotels across Japan, all but this one took credit cards. I have travelled extensively across all continents (except Antártica), including rural Brazil, inner city Marrakech, etc, never had to pay for a night using cash in forty years. I understand that Japan is very cash based, not bothered that small commerce and restaurants take only cash. But the other nine hotels accepted credit cards, time to get on with the times, just ridiculous. Hotel itself looked worn and dated. Must have been luxurious when it was built in the fifties, but by now the carpets look old, halls and room need painting, external swimming pool is off limits and crumbling, elevators are old and creaky. Onsen was nice, but water was not very hot. Most of the signs were in Kanji only, painful to have to use Google Translate to find out where reception is (bottom floors are confusing), in an international hotel (fortunately there was wi-fi). No need to translate everything, but at least get the basics done. On the positive side, room was nice, breakfast was very good, staff very polite and helpful. If you are a fifties buff and want to stay somewhere that takes you back, this is the hotel for you.

Cosy

Reviewed By GrantTaylor25

5 stories high but quite small for an Onsen hotel. The 6th floor roof had 6 private bath rooms where you could reserve for an hour of indulging your body in the natural hot spring while looking out over the sea. Coffee was free but the food was not included so they recommended another place close by that had a very filling course of noodles, rice, tempura and sushi along with 2 tiny desserts of baked egg custard and green tea pudding. The staff were very friendly and helpful and the rooms were clean and functional. The main bath had an outside pool and also a sauna. I needed that to steam me so I could use the scrubbing lotion to get off all the dead skin on my legs. This prepared me for the long walk around the village the next day.

Great experience

Reviewed By arthawkBristol

This is a very nice ryokan in a beautiful location. I pity anyone who tries to drive here, they will collect you in a shuttle bus from Nagasaki station. This is our third ryokan experience and each one has been different. The kaiseki feast was exceptional, this was served in our room in the evening sitting on tatami mats as usual but breakfast was at tables in a communal dining room which is unusual. You can wear your yukata to this if you wish but most Japanese wear their normal going out gear. You can book a private onsen which is an essential part of your experience in a ryokan. Popping a small icecream in your mouth when emerging as a boiled lobster is to experience satori. Excellent English is spoken by staff at reception. I would very much recommend this ryokan and Unzen in general for at least two nights. Just a few general points: The village of Unzen is a 5min walk away. Having arrived after dark, we didn't realise this and booked the shuttle bus to drive us there the following morning. There was very little open in the village when we were there. Oddly there is no convenience store eg. 7-11 but there is a small Japanese general store. The Tourist Office is a 2min walk toward the village and is very helpful for advice on local sightseeing. If you want to take the cable car (and you will), the bus there is 11am, If you miss this the next is 2pm.

Nice and quiet.

Very Glad that I choose this instead of staying up at the ryokan by the unzen jigoku. I like the locality with eateries and supermarket. It is a nice quiet town. The room is clean and well kept. Enjoy the hot bath as well. And there is free internet in the room which obviously is a plus.

部屋風呂の不満

Reviewed By 9ma3

The best Ryokan you will ever stay in!

Reviewed By Shannon L

Everything about Hanzuiryo is spectacular, First is the location, up in the mountains of the Unzen Amakusa National Park. You have your own special entrance down the driveway in a secluded style resort where the rooms are separate from the main building. When I say rooms, they are more like massive apartments with upstairs and downstairs areas for sleeping, dining and relaxing all set up in advance. From your arrival till your departure the staff members are there at you beck and call, effectively and efficiently going about their tasks in a professional and sometimes stealth manner. Any request isn`t at all a bother and they will go out of their way to achieve satisfaction. The dining experience is simply breathtaking with an endless supply for immaculately presented and mouthwatering speciality dishes. It is this Kaiseki (high end) dining experience that will stay with you for years to come and in my opinion the highlight of the stay. Finally the Onsens (Hot Springs) are numerous and indeed relaxing to the core. Public and private are available and all you have to do is let the staff know when and where you want to bathe and everything is taken care of for you. This place is as close to perfection as you will get and pure Japanese Omotenashi (Hospitality) 10 out of 10.

The onsen baths here are fantastic! The water left me feeling refreshed and my skin very soft. I slept very well at this hotel. It has a beautiful view of the sea during sunrise. Outdoor onsen is great, too.
