Belvedereschlossl

Kreuzenstein Castle

Reviewed By free_fireman - Wien

Close to the town of Korneuburg, a few kilometers away, the Kreuzenstein castle is situated in an idyllic, widely visible position on a wooded hill directly above the village of Leobendorf, between the towns of Korneuburg and Stockerau. The access is from Leobendorf on a narrow asphalted road, which ends in a huge car park in the forest, from there it is about 5 minutes uphill until you are in front of the castle with the deep moat and the wooden drawbridge. It is one of the most beautiful, historical sights in Lower Austria and one of the most famous and popular excursion destinations in the area for the whole family. Open daily from 1 April to 1 November, the castle, with its unique collection, brings the world of medieval times to life.
In one of the many guided tours, you can go on an exciting journey through the centuries as you will see the following rooms with their original equipment and inventory: an Armory, Chapel, Great Hall, Princedom-room, Huntroom, Castlekitchen and the Castlekeep. In the year 1702 the castle Kreuzenstein (at that time a ruin) was brought into the family by the marriage of the last daughter of the house Saint-Hilaire with the later Earl and Fieldmarschall Heinrich Wilhelm of Wilczek. His descendant, Johann Nepomuk Count Wilczek, a prominent figure of the Austrian arts and cultural life, who was also a great promoter of science and charitable institutions, began the reconstruction of the Kreuzenstein ruins from 1874 and made the castle an extraordinary and, unique museum of the Middle Ages, as it presents itself today.
The tour lasts approximately 1 hour and takes place by competent and historically well trained staff, who also tell very funny and interesting background to the history of the castle. The castle can only be visited during a guided tour, the entrance fees are OK.

Stift Klosterneuburg

Just a few years after relocating their residence to Klosterneuburg, Margrave Leopold III and his wife, Agnes, founded the monastery near their castle as a religious, social and cultural center in 1114. They handed the monastery over to the Canons Regular of St. Augustine in 1133.

Reviewed By inger_ted - Richmond, Canada

We were enroute from Salzburg to Vienna and stopped off at Klosterneuburg for a couple hours to visit the monastery & town. The Klosterneuburg Monastery is a twelfth-century Augustinian monastery of the Roman Catholic Church located in a hill overlooking the Danube river and town. The Monastery contains the Verduner Altar, made in 1181 by Nicholas of Verdun. Its three parts comprise 45 gilded copper plates modeled on Byzantine paragons. The complex also contains a museum with a collection of Gothic and Baroque sculpture and a gallery of paintings. The paintings found in the abbey church have been well preserved and are impressive. It has been remodeled in the Baroque style in the seventeenth century and was my favourite part of the Monastery complex. If you are travelling through the area, Stift Klosterneuburg is a scenic and historical spot to spend a couple of hours. It has a quaint, picturesque setting with monastery overlooking the town.

Florian-Berndl-Bad

Reviewed By free_fireman - Wien

GARTEN TULLN, Europe's first ecological garden show and a top destination for outings in Lower Austria, is a walkthrough picture-book of regional gardening culture and an oasis of relaxation for those seeking to wind down. Let your spirits soar as you visit the many Gardens and pick up helpful tips for every garden space - GARTEN TULLN holds many surprises in store. Enchanting show Gardens, the 30-metre high treetop walk, a water park with a boating area, and a lively programme of events quarantee relaxing and exciting hours at GARTEN TULLN

Reviewed By Malarchy - Jakarta, Indonesia

Die Garten Tulln is a collection of Gardens over a reasonably sized site in the Wachau town of Tulln. It is extremely well sign-posted and has ample car parking. The parking closest to the Gardens had an X next to it when this reviewer arrived but whatever that means it does not mean the parking is unavailable.
The Gardens themselves are nice. This is not the world's greatest Gardens collection but it is perfectly reasonable. The Gardens closest to the entry are somewhat austere and that can give a wrong impression as there are quite a few lovely plots further back. There are several places to sit and relax, in particular around water features. Unfortunately there is not enough shade really and so the Gardens experience can be quite hot.
The noticeable feature missing from the Gardens is colour. There are very few colourful entries with most of them being more artistic than entertaining. There is a surprising lack of flowers, and the most common flowers shown are not especially vibrant.
Garten Tulln also comes with an excellent little adventure play area for kids as well as a play area built into a part of the forest. Kids really seem to enjoy the challenges presented.
The food options are a bit limited. There is a bbq style grill area which seems popular along with quite a large restaurant. The restaurant is not the most expansive but those who appreciate Austrian cuisine will appreciate it.
What makes the restaurant nice is that it looks out onto a pond. The pond supposedly produces hourly Fountain choreography set to music. This reviewer managed to catch one display but due to an event advertising tourism to Prussia, it certainly was not hourly. The Prussian event did have a brass brand which was interesting.
The Gardens are quite peaceful and on a hot summer sunday were not especially busy. The peace is occasionally broken by unnecessary tannoy announcements broadcast throughout the grounds.
The forest area is a bit limited and there is not much to see. It is possible to hire a small boat like a rowing boat or a pedalo though the silty water does not inspire desire for contact.
The viewing structure is quite impressive. The view down onto the tops of the trees is ok, the view of the grounds show them off in full glory. The view to the neighbouring factory is less amazing.
At €11 for an adult, the attraction is overpriced. It is nice but it is not in the same category of great that the grounds at Melk or Schloss Hof are for instance.

Adlerwarte Kreuzenstein

Reviewed By Anna M

First of all, it seems that this place is very thoughtful to keep birds in a proper conditions and also let them fly freely (outside of shows times).
Show itself was great for us and kids, though it might be a bit scary on a few occasions when the bird fly directly over your head touching a bit with the wings (to have more of it - sit in the middle, lower part, probably best 2-3 raw, less on a sides). We have seen the falcons on a hunt-training and many other wonderful things. Descriptions were in German and were really informative.
After the show you can go around the cages to see birds one more time and make some pictures with an Uhu at the exit.
The shows times: Tue-Sat: 11 and 15, Sun (and Holidays): 11, 14, 16.
Great idea to combine visit with Castle and restaurant
