A leisurely cruise down the river is a pleasant way to spend 90 minutes....a local and informative captain at the helm made this a lovely trip. Take your own food/drink if you wish...
Would recommend to see the town from a different perspective and learn a bit of the history at the same time.
Chill out and relax on the Kowie...

The Royal Port Alfred Golf Club

The Royal Port Alfred Golf Course is one of the oldest and best known in South Africa and was established in 1907.The undulating course snakes its way through thickets of pristine coastal forest and over hilly dunes always with the smell and sounds of the Indian Ocean close by whose blue waters offer the most panoramic views from many of the fairways. In true links tradition every slope, mound and dip remains untouched, demanding creative shot making and deft Reading of angles.Adding to the allure and charm of the course is its resident wild life. Normally shy bushbuck will continue grazing contently as you walk by while Springbok and impala pronk with delight. The blesbok, fallow deer duiker and giant tortoise peer at the golfers with suspicion and there is bird life in abundance.Visitors are always most welcome.

The menu lets itself down as the food exceeds the poor menu graphics. Fabulous staff, alert to your every need.
Just a couple of gripes.
Poor poor wine choice by glass. Worst in town and also the desert menu!
You are better than what you offer. Confusing choices. Modern and yet soooo old fashioned. You are a dichotomy .
Please make your mind up move on and away from the old the new is so good.

Racks in reception very poor workmanship. Definitely need attention. It seems as if it is a very basic primitive SPA which is not true omce you experience it, Word of mouth will help but 1st visitors might turn around at the door. A canopy over entrance would also make it look more proffesional.

The Kowie History Museum

Kowie History Museum is in the old Railway Station Building in Station Road, just off Pascoe Crescent, Port Alfred. It covers the history of the Port Alfred area including details of the settler families, an isiXhosa collection, the old harbour, Railways, shipwrecks, local insects, and many other exhibits. See the website for details.

We really enjoyed this museum. What made it special were the 2 ladies that moved back to PA to retire. They lived in PA when they were children so they were able to provide so much history and stories that made the museum come alive. The history of PA is intriguing from all the shipwrecks to how it got its name. I would allow about 2 hours. They have a very nice and elaborate shell collection and also elegant tea cup collection. I am so glad that we visited this "hidden" treasure.

Fortunately the gravel road was recently maintained so the drive there was no problem. We stayed in Kleinemonde so was short drive to get there. The lighthouse is very pretty but small in comparison to others. Not very tall. We arrived during lunch hour so not able to go up or in. View is good but similar nice views are available elsewhere that has easier access

On arrival my fiance & I was greeted by the friendly Jann we immediately felt welcome. Just seeing those beautiful horses got us super excited. My fiance is more experience in horse ridding then I am but that was not a problem at all, we got paired to a horse a according to hour skill levels.
The Horse ride on the beach was superb, I cannot explain it in words, we even went thru a small forest a little trail so tranquil and beautiful. It was a marvelous time. If I can give advise if you ever visit Port Alfred you have to go for the horse ride. I cannot wait to do it again...

Shipwreck Hiking & Canoe Trails

Reviewed By Traveller55KT - Johannesburg

Our party of 8 (aged 20-60) had an absolutely wonderful experience on this hike. All of us were totally inexperienced hikers and some were definately in the unfit category - but all completed the hike without undue strain. The weather was very kind to us with cool, windless days. Accommodation is very basic but perfectly adequate and in some cases really unique - Treehouse and Lily Pad Huts. Things I would do differently next time 1) take hiking boots - I had thought that most of the walking was on the beach so only took walking sandals - but there is enough walking across uneven fields and forest paths to justify carrying boots with you. 2) take a hiking stick - it just gives extra balance on uneven terrain and is especially helpful when crossing streams over stones or logs. Things I was really glad I had 1) cheap cycle gloves for the canoeing 2) a really waterproof jacket.
It is a great experience for a group of friends or family as you do not spend all the time together - everyone walks at their own pace and groupings of peope are constantly changing.
If you are still thinking about it - just go and do it - you wont be sorry.

Cunny Kla Nie River Cruises

My family and I get together very seldom and chose to spend a leisurely afternoon in the sun on this boat tour. I cannot recommend it enough.
There was a group of us with children (10 adults and 3 children) and there was plenty of room on the boat for us all. The boat provided a bar area with Seating and a sunny front deck. There was also a BBQ for you to use (bring your own food and drinks) during the trip and even a loo.
We loved the gently cruise up the river and soaking up the sun and then a swim and lunch before heading back to Port Alfred. It is a very scenic route and we even spotted a giraffe on the way!
Excellent experience and ideal for a group.

We were most impressed with the assistance we were given at this visitor centre. The staff member who dealt with our queries had all the knowledge at his finger tips and he obviously knew the town very well. With the advice that he gave us, as well as the pamphlets containing maps, we had no problems in finding our way around the town.
