Gorky Central Park of Culture and Leisure

Central Park of Culture and Rest in Kharkov - the best theme park in Ukraine, one of the best in Europe. This is confirmed by a number of awards and positive feedback from our visitors, including Tripadvisor users. The park consists of several thematic zones, each decorated in its own style. In the park there are attractions for all ages - from children to the extreme.

I was there in December so it was a little cool and there were not many people around. However, I can imagine that the place is very popular in warm weather. Lots of rides for the kids, open spaces, nice lake with lots of ducks, snack/drink stalls etc etc. The great thing though, was that despite the cool weather and time of year, most of the attractions were still open. I went on the giant Ferris wheel which gave great views of the city (and only cost the equivalent of US1.50).

Kharkov Dolphinarium

I did the scuba diving with dolphins. I had never done scuba diving before but the instructor was able to explain to me everything I needed to know. It was an amazing experience! I brought my GoPro camera and the diving instructor recorded for me. The dolphins and belugas seemed happy and were quite curious - it was amazing to both touch them and swim with them. To make arrangements for diving, you need someone who speaks Ukrainian or Russian to call. The cashier did not speak much English but when I used the word "diving" (which is the same in both languages),she was able to process my payment and convey that I simply needed to go up the stairs after the current show ended. From there, I was led to the diving instructor who looked after all the details.

It was closed by barriers for a long time. After about 7 months, I have visited Kharkiv again. They opened the park area. Half is full completed and really looking like a brilliant diamond of Kharkiv. I believe that, when they totally finish all restoration plans, it is going to be a very good park for relaxation.

Freedom Square

The square is advertised as the largest central square in Europe and it definitely is that based on what I have experienced. As opposed to being an open area to display military might, etc. it is actually more of a combination of that and park with tree lined paths. I nice area for a leisurely walk thru central Kharkov.

Botanical Gardens

Reviewed By yelenaza - Atlanta

We decided to visit this park (metro Botanicheskiy Sad/ Botanical Garden) based on other reviews. To our surprise we didn't find this place as traditional Botanical Garden. Most locals (unless they live in this area) does not know about existence of Botanical Garden in Karkov and does not consider this park as a Botanical Garden. I also don't understand why other reviewers mentioned tickets. The entrance is free, and it's mostly a local park where at the summer time people of all ages were spending their evening. What is really highlights this park is a natural cold water spring, where people were filling canisters with drinking water. It also has a small pool in the form of cross right across the Wooden Church on the hill (at the time of out visit it was under renovation). I guess that pool used for church baptisms, but at other time during the summer people just using it to cool off. Hiking trails were looking deserted (and kind of scary), so we didn't dare to hike there. In my opinion, unless you are in the area, it does not worth a special visit. But if you want to experience local (not touristy) life - go for it!

This is a free attraction but I probably wouldn't go out of my way to visit again. The animals aren't housed in the best conditions and a number appeared a bit stressed. Having said that it is one of the few opportunities to see animals like lynx ams some others. The grounds are nice.

Avec Fine Arts Gallery

Reviewed By Laxiaozi08200912 - Beijing, China

Can't remember too much about this gallery that's located in the northeast region of Kharkiv, but I certainly did enjoy critiquing the multifarious art works and paintings in the gallery. My favourite one is the painting by the beach in which depict a giant jar of tea, and oil pipe like towers...can't really figure out what that is though...eh. Visited in OCTOBER 2013.
