10 Things to Do in Ilha Grande That You Shouldn't Miss

April 3, 2018 Leonarda Pillsbury

So close to Rio de Janeiro, yet so different, Ilha Grande is Brazil’s relaxing, undeveloped paradise. Stepping off the ferry to the island is to disconnect from the outside world. No cars, no banks (bring your money!), no ringing phones. It’s all about relaxing in the sun, sailing, swimming, disappearing into spas and reemerging for fresh seafood at one of the 30 small restaurants.

Pico do Papagaio

We booked a guided tour with sunrise pioneers to get up the Pico during night to catch the sunrise. The trip was quite expensive but the view and experience were definitively worth it. You leave at 2:30 AM to catch the sunrise around 6h. The hike was really intensive, make sure to bring enough water as you will sweat A LOT! Also bring a sweater, as you will cool down while waiting for the sun to rise. Great experience so definitively recommended!

Very remote only accessible by private boat or once a day village boat. Be sure to snap a picture of yourself with the tree to prove you were there. There is also some vista points on some rocks to climb. Beach of course is very cool. Restaurant with bar on the beach serves fried fish plates...ate 2 of them.

Lopes Mendes Beach

Reviewed By JoaoDanielCF - Sao Goncalo, RJ

One of the most beautiful Beaches in Brazil. Light and thin sand.. very clean water, sometimes with strong waves.
very nice to have a walk along the sand.
You can reach there by boat or by foot starting from Abraão's village (it's a 2.5-3h tracking, with medium level difficulty)
On Lopes Mendes, there is not much structure of bars/restaurants, only some local people selling some soft drinks and snacks. And that makes the beach more calm and quiet, good for a good resting time. Maybe you'll want to carry your own drinks and food - if so, take your trash away with you and collaborate with environment preservation.

Praia de Dois Rios

As the name in Portuguese says (Dois Rios means "two rivers"), two diferent rivers reach the ocean at this beach. It is one of the most beautiful Beaches I have ever seen. There´s no high buildings nearby and the forest is green all year round. There´s a small island in front of the beach that you can reach swimming. The beach can be reached by a two hours track. You can also relax inside the rivers waters.

Meros Beach

Seems to be a favorite of rich locals with their huge yachts. Was difficult to find spot to park. It was polluted with food swimming in the water thrown off boats and used by tourists to try attract fishes. We were recommended to snorkel but barely saw anything but one swarm of fishes attracted by ppl with food. Could be so much more if locals would have a sense to keep the island clean.sad.

We stoped here in a multi-stop boat tour. It was a fun and lovely area, but our weather was a bit overcast to really enjoy the water or its blue shades. There are enjoyable corals and fish in some spots, so snorkeling can be fun.

I was there on a high tide so the beach itself was with narrow amount of sand to stay at. Our guide took us to climb the rocks and we enjoyed a great view from the area. You can jump from the cliff... really cool!

Dois Rios Beach

Definetly a must see in the island. Don't let the walking distance change your mind. The village itself seems abandoned but the beach is wonderful, specialy on both ends of it. Hiring a mountain bike is a good choice to reach Dois Rios more quickly but get prepared for a 4km ramp up.
