10 Things to do in Downtown Core/Downtown Singapore That You Shouldn't Miss

June 25, 2021 Margarita Chappel

The Singapore cityscape looks like it was ripped from the pages of a science fiction comic book. If you’re hungry for a true Singapore experience, sample the myriad street foods or take a cultural cooking class. The Botanic Gardens and the Gardens By the Bay offer a slice of horticultural heaven, and the observation deck of the Sands SkyPark makes you feel like you’re high above the clouds. The banks and walkways along the Singapore River bustle with local activity.

Asian Civilisations Museum

The Asian Civilisations Museum is devoted to exploring the rich artistic heritage of Asia, especially the ancestral cultures of Singaporeans. Founded in 1993 and in its present building by the Singapore River since 2003, the museum traces its roots to the Raffles Museum, founded in the middle of the 19th century. ACM focuses on the many historical connections between the cultures of Asia, and between Asia and the world. Singapore’s history as a port city that brought people together from all over the world is used as a means of examining the history of Asia. Special exhibitions bring magnificent objects from around the world to our Singapore audience. Programmes like the annual River Nights encourage visitors to connect more closely with culture and the arts.

I walked past this place on my way to Marina Bay and got curious. I was not disappointed! The shipwreck exhibition is fascinating, as is the one of ink paintings. I also enjoyed the history of religion in Singapore and the trade in Singapore. There was a free guided tour with a museum volunteer, who was just so delightfully, endearingly enthusiastic about everything. Really great visit, would wholeheartedly recommend.

Singapore City Gallery

Singapore City Gallery is a great starting point to get to know the city for free. Located beside the Maxwell food centre in the historic district of Chinatown, this 3 storey visitor centre goes beneath the skin of the city to understand how the city came to be, that even though it’s a dense built-up city of tar, glass and concrete, it is still so green, has memorable buildings, historic districts and walkable streets. You can imagine and design your own version of Marina Bay or explore plans long into the future like Greater Southern Waterfront city. The main draw is an enormous model replica of the City Centre with uncannily accurate miniatures of building and streetscapes. Look out for an illustrative map drawn by Lee Xin Li. It will sure to bring back memories of Singapore, past and present. Before you leave, catch the dramatic 3-min Island Wide Model show screened every 20 mins at level 1.

This free place was an education on how the city grew and what good city planning can mean. It has exhibits spread over three floors. Enjoyed the section of what other cities are doing for the future. Wish my home town would have good city planners like this place. It took me around two hours.

During the day this can get very busy, particularly if there are cruise liners in port.trying to get photos by Merlion can be a challenge. Late evening as darkness falls, the crowds thin, and there is plenty of space. Great photo opportunities and around 9pm you get fantastic views of the MBS laser show - the financial district /2Fullertons are also well lit to provide a very attractive area with the river in between complimenting with evening traffic.

National Library of Singapore

Reviewed By maryyeo - Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

The National Library of Singapore is good for so many reasons: 1. One of the largest libraries in Asia, 7 (or more) floors of books which are hard to find elsewhere. 2. Central location is great for meeting up with friends. 3. It has a mini-theatre space called the Black Box, a great space to support local arts and performances. 4. It also has unique exhibitions sometimes, most are free. 5. Study room is perfect for students, it has vending machines available for those study hunger pangs and... 6. Right outside the study room there is an outdoor rooftop garden! Great for catching some fresh air in between study blocks. and now that we have kids... 7. The children's library at the basement is definitely one of the prettiest and most awesome, with a treehouse made up upcycled materials set up for the little readers, and a plethora of books to choose from, and in so many languages too, and literally books for all ages (from age zero!). Plenty of space and the clean carpets meant the little ones can enjoy reading at any corner of this children's library.

This eye-catching modern shopping mecca features a contemporary and open design, with breathtaking views of Singapore's city skyline. The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands is a beautiful and stylish luxury shopping mall with a glass roof and amazing views of the Singapore financial district skyline. It has an excellent food court and you can visit the ArtScience Museum which is right outside the mall, as well as get the most amazing views of Singapore city skyline. There are some great restaurants here but what we really enjoyed was eating at the food court and enjoying the light display just in front above the round cordoned off area. We visit Singapore quite often for shopping and sightseeing and use it as a getaway, so we really like to come to this part of the island. With the ArtScience Museum and Gardens by the Bay which are nearby we will continue to visit the Shoppes in the future for shopping and eating and to enjoy the amazing views of Singapore's skyline.
