10 Things to do in Changi That You Shouldn't Miss

March 9, 2022 Ying Subia

The Singapore cityscape looks like it was ripped from the pages of a science fiction comic book. If you’re hungry for a true Singapore experience, sample the myriad street foods or take a cultural cooking class. The Botanic Gardens and the Gardens By the Bay offer a slice of horticultural heaven, and the observation deck of the Sands SkyPark makes you feel like you’re high above the clouds. The banks and walkways along the Singapore River bustle with local activity.

The Changi Museum

Temporarily closed This museum honors POWs who endured the Japanese occupation of Singapore in World War II. Their stories are told with an impressive collection of personal artifacts and news coverage. A British internee returned to the museum decades after the war to recreate the murals he’d painted on the walls of the original chapel – a moving insight into how those held prisoner found hope and comfort in any way possible.

The Changi Museum is well worth the visit, easily accessible via the MRT & Bus system. The little museum has a great collection of war history memorabilia, artifacts & audio recordings with an adjoining chapel where you can pay your respects. For a history buff, allow for 2-3hrs to go through the museum thoroughly to appreciate the collection.

This was the best part at the airport on our stop over! We rested in lounges for a few hours overnight and eventually found the swimming pool we had heard about. Our price included a drink each and it was absolutely lovely to float around in the pool as it first opened, see the sky lighten and hear nearby planes arriving and taking off. Towels were included but you MUST remember your bathers! Also bring a comfy change of clothes and clean undies as well as sunscreen if your stop over is during the day! Singapore airlines from Melbourne gave us a small toiletry pouch with socks and a toothbrush and paste. It was the best way to freshen up after by having a shower, fixing hair and changing clothes. An absolute must!

Butterfly Garden

Saturday 26th October and we in the departure lounge, Changi Airport, Terminal 3 awaiting the Departure of our flight to Mumbai. While walking around, killing time, we did notice signs giving directions to Butterfly Garden, we were intrigued so went along to have a look. We entered the tropical habitat, with its humid climate, which was filled with trees, plants, greenery and flowers, through the doorway on the 3rd floor. We made our way down the 2nd floor and the exit. Along the way we saw the 6 metre high waterfall. There were a number of feeding areas where we did see some butterflies. There was not much butterfly activity going on when we visited. Did see a notice advising when the butterflies were most active, cant remember, but it was not mid afternoon. This was a total surprise and unique experience at an Airport. Thought the concept was imaginative and impressive. Something else special about Changi Airport along with the Orchid Garden & Koi Pond in Terminal 2.

Enchanting little garden in Terminal 2. Great place to check out if you have time to spare whilst waiting for your flight or during transit. Listen carefully amidst the hustle and bustle of the airport and you might hear the sounds of nature in the rainforest. Check out the more than a thousand flora and ferns in the landscaped area and relax and enjoy the koi swimming gracefully.

Jewel Changi Airport

Jewel Changi Airport (Jewel) - Singapore’s brand new multi-dimensional lifestyle destination! Located right in the heart of Singapore Changi Airport, Jewel integrates one-of-a-kind play attractions and extensive landscaping with over 280 exciting shopping and dining concepts, a 130-room hotel and airport facilities for travellers.

If you have at least 2.5 hours spare between flights then you need to head over to The Jewel. Remember that this brand new attraction at Changi Airport is located Land Side which means having to complete the Immigration form and exit the airport (quick and easy). Alternatively if you are staying over in Singapore then you can visit before you fly out - there is a special dedicated “early check-in desks” area inside The Jewel where you can check in and drop your bags for your flight (departing from any of the 4 terminals). The Jewel is directly attached to Terminal 1, and there are walkways connecting it to T2 and T3. The centre piece is the 40m high “rain vortex” which is surrounded by a lush tropical jungle. After seeing many photos and having high expectations, I was still blown away by the scale and beauty of this attraction. In the evenings there is a free 5min light show that takes place at 7.30pm, 8.30pm, 9.30pm, 10.30pm and 11.30pm. There are lots of shops, cafes and restaurants to choose from inside The Jewel.
