January 5, 2022 Claudia Navarrete

KwaZulu-Natal (/kwɑːˌzuːluː nəˈtɑːl/; also referred to as KZN and known as "the garden province") is a province of South Africa that was created in 1994 when the Zulu bantustan of KwaZulu ("Place of the Zulu" in Zulu) and Natal Province were merged. It is located in the southeast of the country, enjoying a long shoreline beside the Indian Ocean and sharing borders with three other provinces and the countries of Mozambique, Swaziland and Lesotho. Its capital is Pietermaritzburg and its largest city is Durban. It is the 2nd most populous province in South Africa, with slightly fewer residents than Gauteng.

Cumberland Nature Reserve is a hidden gem. It is my 'Go To' place when I need Bush Away Time .... time to replenish my soul and to breathe. Over the past years I have paid many visits to this little spot of paradise often taking photos of all things nature and other times, just sitting at a perfectly kept picnic spot enjoying all nature has to offer. All picnic spots are well kept and the ablutions are spotlessly clean. Horseshoe Cottage was a perfect spot for a birthday weekend and from there we explored many tracks, trails and rocks looking for snakes, scorpions, butterflies and a host of other insects and things! The birdlife at Cumberland is amazing. Naturally the animals are a drawcard too and it is always great seeing their excellent condition. Aloe season is a delight and not to be missed! Cumberland deserves to be explored! One of my most favourite hideaways.

I have visited Durban many times and I always head for the botanic gardens as it is the most beautiful place in Durban. There are always an abundance of flowers and the bird life there is amazing especially around the small lake, and of course there are the monkeys! This garden is a very pleasant way to spend a couple of hours away from busy Durban and it is free!!

When friends from Bothaville visited us in Amanzimtoti, the obvious choice for me was to take them for an outing to Ushaka Marine World. Needless to say, they were impressed beyond comprehension with what they saw and experienced. The highlight of the visit being the dolphin show which was both informative and super exciting. They had their pics taken with the heroes post the show, and following a light snack at one of the many fast food outlets, we headed back home, tired but completely gratified.

The largest national Museum in KwaZulu-Natal, this Museum is dedicated to the collection, preservation, study and exhibition of objects of cultural and scientific value.

Arguably one of the best museums in KZN, the Natal Museum is very well maintained, meticulously set-up and very educational. Its vast resource of information from natural to local history is bountiful, well researched and impeccably documented. The taxidermied animals are amazingly real and the dioramas are life-like. It also has adequate sociological and anthropological information that are sometimes lacking in some other museums. Although this museum is nowhere near the Durban CBD, the drive to Pietermaritzburg is well worth it. The only other issue when visiting the museum is parking where you may have to park down a few blocks and of course, no pictures or food allowed.

Saint Lucia Estuary

This estuary is part of the Greater St. Lucia Wetland Park and includes fishing, hiking tours, boat tours and a crocodile center. The crocodiles make swimming an ill-advised idea.

Reviewed By Meliepod - Port Shepstone, South Africa

We booked on the hippo croc cruise boat at around Mid Day , which was recommended to us as hippos are usually waking up from their sleep around this time. We saw a lot of hippos and only 2 crocodiles and a rare sighting of Hammer bird and then a green falcon which is the fastest bird or animal on earth I believe . True magic! Only irritation was the rude tour guide from a French group of tourists , he was rather rude to other people not included on his tour. Making it unpleasant for others.
