It ranks as the second most populous, the third by gross domestic product (GDP), and the fourth largest by area in the country. The state's capital and largest city, Belo Horizonte, is a major urban and finance center in Latin America, and is the sixth largest municipality in Brazil, after the cities of São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Salvador, Brasilia and Fortaleza, but its metropolitan area is the third largest in Brazil with just over 5,500,000 inhabitants, after those of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. The Furnas Canyons are a “must go” place. The water is crystal clear and there are incredible water falls that drop directly into the lake. Water temperature is comfortable.

This is a great, if underpublicized place to experience wildlife if you have already done some of the more classic places in Brazil like the Pantanal or the Amazon. It is famous for birdlife, and it has lots of birds of many different kinds (parrots, toucans, hummingbirds, trogons, hawks, and many others), but we also saw mammals (Giant Anteater is practically guaranteed - we saw them every day, Maned wolf is much harder but possible, Pampas Deer, skunks, fox), reptiles (venomous snakes, lizards), and butterflies and other interesting insects. We hired Mariana Vabo as our guide and she was amazing - really helped us find wildlife and could identify everything.

Nice, beautiful and well preserved park. The entrance is free. They may ask for some id but that's all. You can walk your way in, go by car, motorcicle or bike. The roas inside tha park are good dirt roads. No pets allowed. Beatiful scenery. Wonderfull waterfalls. No barbecue allowed witch is good. Inside the park there is a village were once was a cloth industry and a hydroelectric plant, both deactivated. In the village, two restaurantes serve typical local food.
