10 Specialty lodgings in Bavaria: Best hotel deals for 2023

April 25, 2023 Trinity Boughner

Known for its beer, sausages, Oktoberfest and lederhosen, Bavaria is Germany’s largest federal state and one of its most popular tourist destinations. It's also one of the most independent-minded regions. Home to cities like Munich (the capital) and Nuremberg, Bavaria is also cherished for its hilly countryside, where such gorgeous sites as Hohenschwangau Castle, Neuschwanstein Castle (the model for Sleeping Beauty’s Castle at Disneyland) and Linderhof and HerrenChiemsee Palaces can be found.

We stayed in this hotel just to get a night rest. For me this is one of those hotels that can make me depressed. It was clean though and the bathroom was oké. The beds rather uncomfortable and too small. Only good if there is no alternative.

Small and not so comfortable despite great location

Reviewed By julieg768

We stayed at the Amano Munich 2-7th June. Pre booking a Roomy room said to be a little larger than the standard. Starting with the positive location great for most city sights or further out by underground. Breakfast was good similar options everyday but plenty of choice - you can ask for some fresh eggs to be made also. However - The rooms are small and really only great if you literally want to sleep and shower. Not much room around the bed to put your case even carry on ones. Luckily ours fitted under the bed itself. There are 2 Bedside cabinets but not actual drawers wardrobes etc. so be prepared to leave most folded or in your case. There is a nicely decorated hotel bar. However not available to us during our stay 1 night closed for a private event the remainder closed every night due to staff issues was the reason. With the usual fizzy water no one really wants in the bedrooms and no tea and coffee facility in room - not great. Can’t grab a nice drink and chill near your bed after a busy day out in the city! Also due to the lack of hanging space I put my nightie on the bathroom door hook. It was removed possibly by the cleaner on our second morning and not returned. Despite reporting that, no one has updated me either way about its whereabouts or offered a formal apology. Emails are not answered either despite being prompted to send a query that way if you have one. In summary Good location but not really a hotel in terms of facilities and treatment / service. More just a set of rooms for rent whilst you visit Munich. Munich it self is great - lovely city and lots to see and do. Great buildings and everyone outside the hotel very helpful especially the ladies in the Marienplatz information centre.

Families should avoid...

Reviewed By deutschth

We needed an overnight opportunity with our two small children on short notice in Ruhpolding. While our initial expectations were rather high due to the outside look of the hotel, the friendly reservation call and the high price, we were soon disappointed when checking in. Reservation was made for two adults and two children but the room given to us was way too small for a family of four. On top, the bathroom was merely separated from the sleeping room by a glass divider. And the glass door closing the shower is also the door for the toilet; so you either close the shower OR the toilet; and the toilet floor is constantly wet as you bring the water from the shower into the toilet area! Due to Covid-19, the playing area inside the hotel for the kids was closed. No playground on the outside either. We then went to the pools. Inside pool unsuitable for small children and outside pool only ok under the constant watchful eyes of the parents. Again due to Covid-19, breakfast was only possible in blocks of 1-hour, subject to availability. As we couldn’t take a block, we had to take the items from the buffet and bring them to our (small) room ourselves and have breakfast there. Very unsatisfying solution for an hotel in that price range! Parking the car overnight at the hotel costs an additional 8€. For such an hotel in that price range, parking should be included! On the positive side, the hotel is quite new (though the quality of some installments looks questionable) and looks nice, the staff was friendly, the location quite nice and the food very good. Might be good for couples, families however should look for better alternatives...

All good except receptionist was rude

Reviewed By sandrang08

The hotel was great! Comfy bed, big room and great breakfast. However, I had 3 interactions with the front desk and all were not up to standard. The first was when I arrived and I was told breakfast was not included and when I asked again, the receptionist was simply not pleasant and with little patience. The 2nd was when I asked for extra towels as I needed them for my morning workout, they never came. The last took the cake. I was checking out and the receptionist gave me a pen from a bowl of pens, asking me to sign the credit card receipt. I did as was told and put back the pen. She looked at me, removed the pen said that’s perfect, now I have to sanitize all the pens! Completely rude and uncalled for!

The staff was nice. We got there a little later than planned. The lady showed us to use the fancy room key. We had a room at the front of the building, so there was noise from the traffic. The bed was comfy, bathroom roomy. Had a TV, linens, and soap. Breakfast the next morning was yummy. Check out was easy.

Art Hotel & Hostel

Welcome! Good that you managed to find your way to art hotel & hostel. Our house is located in a historic building in the center of Passau. Once you step out the door, you are already in the pedestrian area of the town with plenty cafes and restaurants. The St. Stephan Cathedral and the rivers Inn and Donau are only a few minutes walk from our hotel. Furthermore, a part of the ancient roman wall belongs to our property which you can visit during your stay. The hotel is located in the Kantnerhaus which was once build by an merchant family from Passau. The whole building was renovated in Summer 2014. With a great deal of effort, we tried to keep the ancient charm and combined it with modern comfort. In order to keep the ancient and historic atmosphere, we do have to make little concessions in terms of comfort. Therefore we cannot offer you a lift in hotel. The unique charm of the old wooden stairs will hopefully be some kind of replacement.

They were so close......

Reviewed By PKa

I've been delaying this review because I hate writing bad reviews, but what can you do.... We stayed here for 3 nights with our dog in October 2021. The location of the hotel is beautiful, it sits in the middle of wine yard so you get nice views and there is good walking trails all around. Rooms are smallish, but not too small, nice beds and minibar. Rooms are kept extremely clean. Breakfast selection is excellent with lots of local delicacies and the staff at breakfast room are fabolous! Which gets us to the not so good parts. Apart from the check-in and the staff at breakfast, the sercice is the problem of this hotel, especially if you don't speak german. On our last night, it was pouring down and we decided to eat at the hotel restaurant (it is rather long walk to the old town where most of the Volkach restaurants are). We go to the restaurant and no, you cannot eat here, you have no reservation and we have party of xx persons. The restaurant was empty at that moment, so we tried to suggest that we are fast eaters, we can get out quickly. No, that was not an option, neither was room service ("No, we don't do that"). No help at all, just cold no to everything, no help or suggestions what we should to etc. So, we took drinks at the bar and tried to think what to do. In the end, we ended up walking to nearest supermarket in the pouring rain to get us something to eat. Not good guys. Next morning, we were checking out, I gave our room number, told them what we had used from minibar (1 beer). I paid and as I walked out, I started to think that wait a minute, didn't we pay this hotel in advance (we had 4 hotel reservations on this trip and I did not remember, this was my bad). At the car, I checked and yes, I had paid this hotel in September. So, back to the reception, same clerk as before, told him that we already paid and showed him the document. With out a word, he just works on the terminal and then gives me the recipe, "It's cancelled". Apparently their system does not show that you have already paid, or he just didn't care....but anyway, no apology, no nothing, unbelievable. Oh, and I ended up paying that 1 beer from minibar with cash, and even that I had to ask him (how about the beer?). In the big picture, small things, but they really can (and in our case, it did) make you feel bad about the hotel.

Excellent stay ...

Reviewed By Iolanda A

This fairly small hotel is rather "exquisite" because of being family owned and thus less "formal" than the average type of hotel. Its decoration was "family" oriented with pictures and paintings of the actual owner. The bedroom we were accommodated at was big and the morning breakfast was clearly the best we had throughout our 11 day trip to Germany.

Great location and price if visiting visiting friends or not a needy tourist

Location is excellent for south east Munich. Very short walk to U-Bahn and only 15 minutes to city center. Plenty of parking in the garage, Supermarket next door. No frills, but very clean. USB socket for charging devices. Extremely friendly and efficient staff, with many languages spoken. And the price can't be be beat in the Munich area.

B&B Hotel Bayreuth

Clean, simple and moderately priced hotel

Reviewed By Christoph B

B&B Hotel in Bayreuth is a simple, moderately priced hotel in the heart of Bayreuth. The hotel looks quite new and is quite clean. The covid-19 restrictions were taken very seriously. Unfortunately, this meant that they couldn't offer breakfast or open a common area. Our room was rather small, but sufficient. It had a TV, wardrobe, air-conditioning and soap in the bathroom. Towels were clean and changed regularly, even when not specifically asking for it. The people in the reception were friendly at all times, same holds for the cleaning staff. In the reception you will find vending machines for coffee and cold drinks. A supermarket, bakeries and restaurants of any sort can be found just around the corner. Parking is possible in a nearby garage (2-3 mins walking) at 7 euros per day. I can recommend B&B Hotel Bayreuth since it is located centrally at moderate cost and offers most things that one would expect.
