Relaxing stay

Reviewed By Banda-in-Japan

My two night stay at this hotel, with regular dips in their delightful hot spring bath, significantly diminished the knee pain I am experiencing from a torn meniscus. Equally important, the hotel was very comfortable, with airy, spacious rooms. In addition to the welcome sweet provided in the room, an onigiri rice ball was served in the evening upon my return to the hotel (due to other social commitments, I did not have dinner at the hotel). The Japanese-style breakfast was served in private dining suites off the hotel lobby, with separate coffee service available after breakfast. The only negative I could report was that getting on the wifi in the evenings was difficult. They need a bigger "pipe".

Rustic yet comfortable

Reviewed By Banda-in-Japan

Just getting to this onsen hotel deep in the Yonezawa mountains was an experience, arriving at an unmanned train station to be met by a little van that carried us up a steep and winding road to the hotel, which sits next to a cool little waterfall. The hotel is a typical labyrinth like many onsen hotels, with amazing wood flooring. Welcome was extended by the resident cat, fat and shiny. My room was in the newest wing, a comfortable two room suite with views of the waterfall. Meals were served in rooms and featured lots of local seasonal delicacies; a real treat! There are three baths to choose from, including an outdoor "stone" bath, an outdoor cedar bath and an indoor bath. The stone bath is a bit of a walk upstream and has scheduled times for use by men or women. A sign is posted to tell guests which gender is permitted at any point in time. The cedar bath is usually mixed bathing but can be reserved for private use. There is one indoor bath for women only and a larger one that is mixed bathing. It can be a bit complicated to figure out and one of my companions got a bit of a rude surprise. Because of the hotel's remote location, there was limited mobile phone service and the hotel's wifi was also a bit weak. Of course, if one is traveling to such a remote location, perhaps the point is to get away from it all. Certainly I enjoyed the chance to just chill out.

Perfect 1994 experience and now old friend

Reviewed By Jaysquared

My new (in 1994) Japanese bride and I were touring North Honshu inWinter and planned to stay at Nishiya for skiing. On our way up the mountain in snowy conditions, my car slid off the road and was disabled about halfway up. We didn't have mobile phones in those days, so passers-by were kind enough to help us contact the ryokan and its owner, who came down the mountain personally in the hotel van to bring us up. He then arranged a tow-vehicle to a local repair shop and made us very welcome in his 700 year old inn. We have been back on several occasions over the intervening years, and consider him a friend. We will be back again when chance allows, and relish the possibility. Highly recommended for the hospitality, food, atmosphere, genuine hot spring, and proximity to great skiing.
