The perfect ryokan in Kanazawa

Reviewed By 4548ring

When looking to stay in Kanazawa, one would be hard pressed to find a more perfect place than Sumiyoshiya. The location is great, as it is very close to both the Omi-Cho Market, and the Kanazawa Castle Park. We spent two nights at this ryokan and could not have been happier! Mie Sumi was the consumate hostess! When asked for extra water in the room, recommendations for a shushi restaurant, arranging for taxis, all was taken care of in a matter of minutes. She even provided us with the name and location of the where to find the wonderful tea sweets served in our room. The room (#2) was spacious and immaculate. The dinner (served in our room) was outstanding! Crab, grilled fish, sushimi, shrimp, and clear soup with clam were all delicious. We could not have asked for a more wonderful meal! While Kanazawa was a bit quiet (mid-June, Tues-Thurs) we found plenty to do around town, and will make a return visit in November. When we do, we plan to stay at Sumiyoshiya once again.

Highlight of our Japan trip

Reviewed By Koro

We had a wonderful stay here in August. We were warmly greeted by an English-speaking staff member and shown to our traditional Japanese room, which was absolutely lovely with a river view and peaceful minimalist furniture. I was concerned when I booked because it was a smoking room but there was no smell at all. We reserved the private stone bath and it was an amazing experience. Food and snacks were good and abundant. Futons were made up for us while we were at dinner and we had a great sleep. We only spent one night and it would have been better to have had two to enjoy the room and all the hotel has to offer. The Western breakfast was especially fun with course after course cooked right in front of you with guests seated around a stovetop. The area is within easy reach of Kanazawa and I would highly recommend visiting the temple grounds of Natadera on your way from Kaga to the hotel. We ended up paying around 60 euros for a taxi to take us there and wait for us for an hour, but it was worth it for what was the highlight of a 2 week trip to Japan. There's a nice British guy at the tourist office at the Kaga station that can help you arrange this with a taxi driver. It's not cheap, but when you factor in the cost of a luxurious dinner, breakfast, and private bath (not to mention tea, snacks, yukata rental, all free), it was a good value stay and we really enjoyed ourselves.

Best Japanese hotel!

From the moment we arrived it was 100% service. The valet parked our car and took our bags to our room without us having to say or do anything. The front office team were very helpful and spoke english very well. We were given a convenient traditional japanese room. We booked the couples private onsen which we enjoyed immensely both were clean and luxurious overlooking the river and nature. Our bedroom was massive! and the tatami floor was so comfortable it was the best sleep we had in japan. We were given complimentary champagne for our honeymoon dinner. The food was all traditional Japanese there were over 8 courses and breakfast was just as interesting. I was very nervous that the hotel might smell of cigarette but it did not! This was the perfect Japanese experience thank you for such wonderful service I would recommend this to everyone.

New Maruya....good...but not that new!

Reviewed By aichii

Chose to stay at this member of the Yukai resort group having taken a bath there last year. From the outside the hotel looks relatively new compared to some of the other Yukai Resort properties and the rooms look out onto the lake over the outdoor swimming pool. The rooms are large with a toilet and small bathroom (shower and sunken bath-tub) but don't look too closely at the fixtures (the carpets are worn, the sinks are relatively old-fashioned, stained and dusty) Having said this the New Maruya has three things going for it: 1. The hot spring baths. There is a large indoor bath and a fair sized outdoor bath. The view from the indoor bath is onto the lake..but unfortunately right now there is some sort of construction going on on the path in front of the men's bath so it's not the most comfortable feeling taking a bath in the day-time as there was a lot of activity outside. 2. The customer service at reception and in the restaurant was excellent. There was heavy snow in this area when I stayed and I was given a pair of wellington boots to use. Also the food offered at the Yukai resort hotels is a good introduction for foreign people looking for a Japanese experience (sushi, tempura, noodles, miso soup etc). Also the staff were all incredibly friendly and provided everything that I asked for.(you will need basic Japanese to stay here...as no one spoke English) 3. The view. This hotel looks out over the lake and some rooms have views of the snowed capped mountains. All in all one of the nicer Yukai Resort properties and the return bus trip from Nagoya costs only 3000 yen (This service is also available from Osaka and Kyoto)

Decent enough for 1 night stay

Reviewed By Jill_Chong

We were warmly welcomed to the hotel and received good service throughout. The room had a lovely view of the river and was very quiet and peaceful. Hot spring was average, but they have an outdoor hot spring which was small but a nice experience. Dinner and breakfast was good, we were very stuffed. Our biggest issue was that the room stunk of cigarette smoke (even though we asked for a non-smoking room) and no air purifier to be seen. It was so bad that the next day after we had checked out and left, our clothes and hair still smelled of smoke. That truly spoiled our stay and we were glad to be out of there after only one night.

A hidden gem in Japan!

From the beautiful nature surrounding the hotel to the calm and warm staff that will always help you with a smile, everything about this place is relaxing. The room is big, comfortable, and quiet. Traditional japanese style (which I found is better for my back). The onsen is big and has many amenities, with hot termal water that comes straight out of the mountains. And the restaurant is simply something out of a movie. Every single piece on their menu is a work of art. From sushi to barbecued fish, tofu and wild boar. So many delicious things to chose from. Having dinner or breakfast there you will feel in another time in history. You will exit this hotel happier and more relaxed.
