An Alpine lodge at the foot of Mount Asahidake

Reviewed By Ruth38915

The hotel is about a 10 minute walk from the Ropeway and there are plenty of walks in the immediate surroundings. It does look like an Alpine lodge with lots of exposed wooden beams. Rooms are a good size. The Onsen is excellent. We ate in the Japanese restaurant one evening and the French restaurant the next and the food in both was of a very high standard. Some of the fabric of the hotel is showing slight signs of wear, but that is a minor issue and the hospitality of the staff more than makes up for this.

Winter Trip

Reviewed By SariLynn12

Our first time to travel to Japan during winter. We stayed here overnight to see the Sounkyo ice waterfall festival. We stayed in a Japanese style room which we definitely did enjoy. Room was spacious for 3 adults ( a bonus ) . Mats and toiletries is well provided. Banquet is very chaotic during dinner ( maybe it's peak season ).

Lovely traditional hotel with amazing onsen

Comfortable hotel, spacious roms in a beautiful area. The onsen was amazing, especially the outdoor area where you could hear the waterfall. The kaiseki dinner was a fantastic experience and the breakfast buffet was nice. The staff were so helpful - it was our first trip to Japan and we had never stayed in a ryokan before and they patiently explained the dinner and onsen etiquette!

Quiet place but a bit expensive

Reviewed By kelapa44

Isolated location with greenery. Perfect for those doing nature hikes and climbing Asahidake. Nice lounge with plenty of sofas and home-like atmosphere. Yes looks like an Alpine lodge more suited for winter but it was fine in summer too. Large spacious room with view of the greenery. Small onsen which i did not see anyone else there except my family. Quiet place compared to the busier Bear monte hotel. We were able to go to the Bear monte hotel for the onsen facilities there - though much bigger but there also many people there. My initial trip had 4 members but one cancelled so there was only 3 members. However it was difficult to contact them to see if we could change to a Japanese room for 3 people instead of 2 twin room for 4 people. But it was fully booked at other places so we went ahead to stay on. I believe it was based on twin accommodation so i could not have changed it anyway but it would be nice to have known this for sure. Staff could not speak English so well so any complicated discussions were not possible. Receptionist looked stern but kitchen staff were very friendly. Onsen was small and a bit unkempt - dry leaves not swept. But no one else were there except us. We drove from Sapporo and arrived at 8pm. We received a call at 7pm via Booking.com telling us to have dinner outside as their dinner ends at 7.30pm. But in the hotel website, it says dinner ends later i think at 8.30pm. If we knew we would have ensured to arrive by 7.30pm. So we missed the dinner that night. A bit scary to drive at night as it was dark and lonely road but the road was safe with a lot of light-reflective posts. As it was dark, my cousin managed to see two foxes by the roadside. The entrance road was not so well signposted so we passed by unknowingly till the end of the road which was at Bear monte and received directions from Bear Monte. Price was a bit expensive for what we received but i guess one had to pay due to its isolation.

Very basic; nevertheless, adequate

Visited the town for photo shooting. The hotel is very basic; nevertheless, adequate for a short stay in this small town. They served buffet breakfast and dinner. Washroom in the room, but bath was at a common area in the hotel (together with their hot spring facilities). Such a setup is very common among small town hotels (with hot spring) in Japan.

Small Pleasures Deliver Pleasant Stay

Midway stop when driving across Hokkaido. Public baths were enjoyable, especially the wide panoramic view of natural surroundings & mountains, although the Showa-era type with arched windows of beveled glass was rather soothing. Our meal plan was CRAB in our room- some sashimi, a whole kegani crab/person, crab in the hotpot, and a cream crab dish. When in Hokkaido, must eat crab. At leisure... Really nothing to do in this ski area, other than the ropeway. If there is an evening performance go see it (even if you don't understand Japanese) it was fun and you can see the Ainu clothing (might be cancelled because of Covid19). Also, the gift shop has some seldom found items. Walk around and enjoy the artifacts and stuffed bears.

Solid place to stay for exploring Asahidake

Reviewed By DadTravelOrganiser

The primary reason to stay here is to explore Mount Asahidake - which is a wonderful summer hike. Other reviews make the point that the hotel is large (hence attracting coaches) and a bit dated. But there are some really good reasons to stay here: * The location. It is a short walk to the ropeway, and the parking is easy and free. It is significantly closer than other hotels, avoiding a longer walk or the need to pay for parking at the ropeway. * The staff. The staff are only too happy to help, and even when their English is not great, really patient and helpful. * The food. It is really good. Often in large hotels the buffet is a bit meh. But here the selection is very large, it is frequently replenished, and was of good quality. Further, if you stay more than one night, they offer additional meal choices that are made just for you. * The hotel is clean, you can open the window, and had large inside and outside onsen. Downsides? A lot of groups of Japanese hikers were there when we were - so you will experience early morning groups walking the corridor with their bear bells! The dining hall can get a little busy, and the hotel isn't new. But overall, I would absolutely recommend it.

Pleasant stay

Visited during early November which is a low peak season in Hokkaido too see snow. It was amazing. We truly enjoyed our two nights stay in the hotel. Selected this hotel as it fits our budget. Hotels around either exceeded our budget or the hotel doesn't come with a attached bathroom. We chose the Japanese tatami room and it is really spacious and comfortable, our friends chose the Japanese modern room and it's almost half the size of the tatami room. The breakfast and buffet dinner are not up to standard though there are vast selection of food. Bingo game after dinner was fun and we won some dried kelps back. Receptionists speak English so communication is not a problem, they helped to book private onsen at sister hotel and the experience is wonderful.

Completes the Japan experience

Reviewed By simpleXplorer

The hotel is located almost next to the Shirahige Waterfall. The hotel is not new but the lobby is clean and orderly, staff were veryfriendly. The room we had was on tatami (floor of straw mats) and spacious. Futons were laid for us when we were at dinner. The hotel room was divided into two parts - at the entrance where we took off our shoes was also the very compact bathroom, then the second section was the actual room itself. The very compact bathroom has a toilet bowl, a small basin and a small bathtub. But there are no shampoo etc. Bathing is meant to be done at the traditional onsen area on the ground floor. We tried that despite the initial concerns of going into the onsen naked. We found out from online reviews that a kaiseki dinner can be added to the room for a small price. We called ahead and added that. It was a good choice - the dinner was delicious. The only negative feedback was the noisy aircon in the room, supposedly due to the age. My family slept through but I wore an ear piece to get to sleep. Overall, good stay. The onsen and the Japanese dinner completed the Japan experience in our Biei leg.
