This ryokan style hotel has been recently refurbished. Its warm, comfortable and the staff are super friendly. You have ti walk up the mountain a bit to get to it, but it such a practical location to stay at, you are closer to the yu road. The ogawa open air hot spring is near by, restaurants close. Bars down the hill a bit and free parking. Id recommend the room 203, one of the larger rooms, with tv, toilet ,plenty of room up to 6 or 7 people to sleep on mattresses. And the view is spectacular. This hotel does have drying room for gear, and plenty of room to leave gear.restaurant is excellent for dinner and breakfast. The hotel is on 3 or 4 floors, with no lift. Staff are top

We booked this place in hope for some early snow fall which didn’t happen but our disappointment was short lived when we were welcomed by our host. We have been traveling around the world for 3 months now and the hospitality we received here is going to be hard to beat! Rooms are perfect for the Japanese style and everything you need .

This is small Minshu (Bed and Breakfast) type place, in an older 2 story japanese style house. Location is fantastic, 30m up the street is Yuzawa shrine and the Yu Road moving walkway to the ski field, 50m down the street is the famous O Yu public onsen and just past that the main shopping/restaurant street. The owner Saeko is very friendly and helpful and speaks english. Although it seemed booked out early on Booking.com there were lots of empty rooms when we were there so may be worth contacting directly. We had the family room which had just enough space for 4 beds on the floor and the heated table. There was no kettle in the room but Saeko provided hot water on request. There is no fridge, but in winter the gap between the window and ricepaper screen worked well to keep stuff cold. Shared toilets and shower facilities are downstairs with bedrooms upstairs. The futon beds were comfy and warm, I was surprised I found the "bag of grains" type pillows quite comfortable. The wifi worked from the room, there was a large drying room in the basement. We only had breakfast once, quite a nice japanese style one. Other days we got something from stores down the street. There was a small open area behind the house which was a highlight for my kids as they could build snowmen and snow forts.

Stayed here for 5 nights as a group of 7. The traditional rooms are very comfortable, plenty of blankets and well heated. The in-house Onsen (with showers) is great and very clean. Breakfasts are wonderful and change every day. But best of all are the team that run the pension, they are super helpful and do anything they can to make your stay the best it can be. Would have no hesitation retuning to stay again. Oh, and the location is excellent for all chairlifts and restaurants and bars in the evening.

Our group of three families with eight teenagers between us had a fantastic four nights at Himecho. This house has been renovated beautifully and is both stylish and comfortable. The beds were amazing! It is located in a very convenient part of the village just below one of the ski lifts. The bar next door, which is actually part of the same building, was a great place for a drink after skiing. The two hosts were friendly and knowledgeable. We would love to return one day.

A well run comfortable Japanese style family hotel, 10 minutes walk from the main ski gondola. Right in the village (known for its onsen or hot springs) near - a few minutes walk - to restaurants, bath houses and the bus terminal. Excellent breakfasts and optional dinners. The family who run it are welcoming and anxious to see that all goes well. Some rooms have shared, but impeccable, bathrooms. There is an internal bath house (soaking pool) at the optimum temperature of 41 degrees C, and other bath houses nearby. I'm glad I stayed there and not in a characterless international-style place - the experience was part of the holiday. (Note: skis and boots can be hired from Sports Thanx at the top of the path that goes up fro the hotel, and stored there overnight - saves carrying them). Most people go there by Shinkansen and bus, not by car.

We could have chosen one of the fancy lodges or hotels to stay in, but we wanted a Japanese Ryokan experience - and we certainly got it! Finding the place was quite difficult as there are no signs in English that signal this place or the streets. It was just a luck of the draw that we had a picture and nervously knocked on the door of the right building. It's located on one of the main streets of the town, so really handy to some shops, restaurants, onsens and the bus stop. The hosts tried so hard to make us welcome - they didn't speak a speck of English and we didn't have an ounce of Japanese other than greetings. We did alright though, they managed to show us on the map a few places to eat and even figured out that what we needed etc. One thing we didn't figure out though is the showering facilities situation, as there are only communal hand basins and toilets on each floor. We expected to bathe in the local onsens anyway, so it didn't really matter. Sleeping on the futons was more comfortable than we expected and even enjoyed the hard pillows. I think it's sorted out a few crinks in my back! Yes, there is no wi-fi, but that's the glorious thing about choosing a place like this. Removing yourself from the technological world really did us some good and I appreciated the basics of this place. We LOVED our time in Nozawa Onsen; snowboarding all day, eating great food in local restaurants, bathing in public onsens, Japanese language, no internet, sleeping on futons - all part of the real deal experience.
