The Museum Route in Cracow Saltworks Museum is located entirely on level III of the mine and is about 1.5 kilometres long. Sightseeing of the Route takes about 1 hour. Sightseeing of Museum Route does not entail any additional cost, it can be visited by the same ticket to the Mine. What are the major features on the Museum Route? The giant horse powered hoisting machines represent one of the chief attractions. The device known as the "Polish" is the world’s largest wooden mining machine! Lovers of arts and handicraft will surely be enchanted by paintings of Jan Matejko, the precious Horn of the Hewer Guild and a luxury train constructed for the top authorities of the Austria-Hungary Empire. A brilliant attraction which shows the history of the salt trade in Krakow and the mine overall. The salt mine is located within 30mins from Krakow and is a must do which doesn't cost that much. You're escorted by a tour guide and please check timings of tours before you reach the place. The tour takes 2 hours and involves climbing down stairs (around 800 steps in total) so wear appropriate footwear. The whole tour is safe and travelled by millions per year. Most mainstay hotels in Krakow arrange these tours so they should be able to provide guidance.

My husband and I visited this UNESCO site on our trip to Poland during our stay in Tarnowskie Gory. This Lead-Silver-Zinc Mine and its Underground Water Management System was inscribed to the World Heritage List in 2017. We didn't know what to expect as we've never visited a mine before. The tours are in groups, ours was a group of at least 20, maybe more. The tour lasted 90 min. I believe. Our tour guide spoke English and in addition we were given plenty of literature in English to fully understand what we were seeing. We all had to wear long raincoats and hard hats. The Tour started in the museum where we learned the history of the mine and the area. Then we took the elevator to go underground to visit the corridors from the 18th and 19th centuries. The tour covered over a mile of the corridors. We crossed part of the route in boats as it was through a flooded corridor. We toured adits, shafts, galleries and other features of the water management system. The images we experienced from the extensive labyrinth of corridors was priceless. This was such a unique visit we thoroughly enjoyed... we highly recommend!

We enjoyed the tour, learned some interesting facts about the mine (e.g., the gold price dropped 12 times after conquering the New World) and how the gold was produced. Very enjoyable to go by local mine train, feeling like in the movie :-) Cheap price, the tour took 80 minutes. A pity they do not regularly offer tours in English or Czech, we understood only half of information in Polish (the guy was very funny and we would love to fully understand more jokes :-)

We enjoyed our visit here very much. Very interesting to go through all the shafts and pits, good video flicks and nice displayed items. You can even see mining machinery in operation. The only negative thing the dirty helmets. They should really replace and clean those headbands. The visit is around 3 hours long, so for your visit you prepare with: flat bladder:), comfy shoes which may get dusty, some drinks in hand if you need, photo device with full battery, warm clothing, money/card for the pub. Bags, cases are not recommended to carry, same goes with hats or anything on your head, because of the mandatory helmets. Don't expect any mobile signal.:) Enjoy.
